I don't really see much difference between Sarah Silverman and Paris Hilton from my limited knowledge. Both of limited talent, relatively good looks and snotty full of themself attitudes.

Sarah IMHO is attractive, funny and intelligent. Paris is just Paris. Attractive and filthy rich.

Whether or not you think she's funny, at least Sarah Silverman is famous for having a career.  That's a pretty clear dividing line.

i admit that i'm slightly interested in this story, i'll give it a few seconds of my attention - but to say that it's the most important thing that happened today?!?  i think this might count as the First Seal.

on the way home this afternoon, somebody cut in to my afternoon-drive talk show to announce that paris was going back to jail.  he made the rather astute observation that one reason, maybe, that this is news-worthy is because it "proves" that the world isn't as entirely f*cked up as we might think, that every now and then all the money in the world doesn't put you above the law.

 maybe.

My local Giant checkout lady has one as well. A fine 27 year career.

Her "career" is being a comedian, by making fun of people. Not like she's curing cancer or anything.

Hey, I wouldn't disagree with you, although I am a fan of hers.  I'm just saying it's a little easier, IMO, to wish ill on someone born with a silver spoon in their mouth who are constantly acting like they're above normal social rules and bounds.  As a normal joe, it's nice, for once, to see a celebrity get what they deserve and not have money or power get them out of it.

And even you can't argue that it's more noble to work for what you have than be handed everything from birth.  Or can you?

I really haven't followed the story or her life enough to form an opinion. The only thing I've seen her in was that porn video that someone posted a link to here one time.

I guess I have other things on my brain that I'm contemplating. It just seems odd that people would take such glee from someone else's misfortune. Sure, maybe she has a bad attitude, but what horrible crimes has she committed? Did she kill someone while she was driving drunk, like Vince Neil did? Did she beat her spouse/partner, like James Brown did? Did she call someone a "nigger" like Elvis Costello did?

Well, yes, she apparently did:

And I don't want to be an apologist for Mr. Costello (the only time he ever made the cover of Rolling Stone was to essentially apologize for the outburst) but the circumstances of that incident are often overlooked.  I'm not saying there are circumstances where the use of that word is acceptable but as I've read it, it was a very drunken exchange of extremely crude insults between EC and the Attractions and Stephen Stills band.  Sort of like "Your mama" wars.  Once again, I'm not saying "It wasn't a big deal that Elvis Costello said that" but it was a drunken error in judgment, in my opinion, and not the true colors of closet racist.

No, but she could have. There are plenty of people being giving the same sentence for the terms she violated. I realize you are discussing why people dislike her so much...I digress.

I like Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel. I did not however like the two minutes I watched of the MTV movie awards. (Horrible television and Sarah was a horrible host. I'm a bit surprised she took the job.) So, I blame MTV for the crude jokes. I do think it was a bit over the line to make such a joke to a person ready to head off to jail - whoever they may be.
Anyway, I've never really cared about Paris, but the whole debacle is irritating at this point, so I can't help but form an opinion.
Daily news now includes updates about Paris and Anna Nicole..yipee.

I find it less offensive then MTV parading around Snoop Dogg at an awards show when he was hiding out from the police on murder charges.

Isn't there a difference between calling yourself a "nigger" (as the always trustworthy Fox News reports she did) and calling Ray Charles a "nigger"?

Typical Rhett post.  An opinion not based on fact.  Sigh.  You're so smart, it's obvious.  But why, oh why, can't you overcome your white male entitlement hubris and ever, EVER, acknowledge that when you have limited knowledge you should just SHUT THE FUCK UP!
