Modest Mouse
« on: October 22, 2003, 10:30:00 pm »
Alright hipsters, what's the scoop on Modest Mouse?

They're playing 3 nights at the Fillmore and guess who the opener is?

The Shins.  I'm enjoying The Shins new one as much as the debut and would like to see them, but I'm surprised to see them opening 3 nights for a band I've heard very little about.

Oh, that's a tough call as I don't know what you would think of their music, which is what it boils down to. Personally, I don't like them. Something about the singer's whinny voice that drives me nuts. However, you'll find probably most people on this board will probably like them. Some a lot. It's that whinniness that gets me. Sort of Emo's big brother but a little better.

If you've ever heard the Ugly Casanovas, the singer, I think it is, is in that band. To me, they sound very similiar.

If you go to Insound, you can get an MP3 of their's.

They also have a song by the Ugly Casanovas under U.

Never heard Modest Mouse called emo.  They are pretty hard to classify.  I love them and they are a great live band, but they are the kind of band that some can easily hate.  I am not surprised to see The Shins opening, last time her (September of 2001) Modest Mouse sold out 2 nights at the Black Cat, and guess who opened for them, The Shins (and the Fruit Bats).  That is the only time the Shins have bothered to play here I think.  Would have been a great show, but Modest Mouse lead singer Isaac Brock was so fucked up he broke his amp and could not finish the show.  I hear the second night was better though.  Brock is also an A&R man for sub pop who signed Holopaw and Iron & Wine I think.  He came back with his side project (Ugly Casanova) last year and had to come straight from jail, I think the story was that he had been caught bringing cocaine from Canada to New York.  I say give it a try, can't hurt.

That's the impression I got from the samples on their web site.  I'll ask a round for a copy and see what I think.  I'd hate to pay $20 for a 30 minute Shins set.  Thanks Jag.

I've heard Modest Mouse a couple times months ago, and I didn't like them either.  But the Shins are great.  $30 -- that's a chunk of change, though.

Bags, I've already forgotten the dates you'll be in SF, but those Shins shows are Nov. 2,3,4 at the Fillmore and it's $17 at the box office, $20+ from ticketbastard.

I think I'll go and if they suck, blame he whose real name starts with m.  Welcome back, by the way.

My apologies Jag, all music references them as emo as well, but their lyrics and background aren't emo at all.

No problem. I myself was struggling for a description and that was the closest I could come up with, which is why I said Emo's big brother. Not quite Emo but sort of in that family. They are nothing like the Nu-Metalish Emo but they do have a tad bit of something or other in that neighborhood to them. Their guitars are better though. It's that whine factor.

Hey smackie...

I love Modest Mouse.  The Moon & Antarctica is one of my top 20 of all time.  Hell, on a bad day, it's in my top 10.  Emo is a terrible tag for 'em...they're hard as hell to classify (and that's what makes them so great), but I'd go with sort of a cross between the Meat Puppets and the Pixies.  Trippy folk-punk, with plenty of amazing lyrics and crazy sounds.  So good.

Can't imagine passing up a chance to see them with the Shins.  Although be forewarned that MM's drummer done quit the band, and I haven't heard them since, although I can only presume that they're still excellent.

I bought my ticket for the show on the 4th a few days after they went on sale--like a month ago--and one of the three shows had already sold out.  but good luck.

that sounds like a killer double bill. modest mouse is one of those bands i love, but i can kinda see why people dislike them.  i think it takes awhile for brock's voice to click with some people.  lonesome crowded west is one of my all time favorite albums.

also, trippy folk-punk is about as close as you are going to get for a description.
