so, apparently, "fantasy brewers" is a thing.  no, not creepy thoughts of Sam Calagione & Vinnie Cilurzo getting it on in a bad of hops... think fantasy football for the beer industry: folks "draft" breweries before the start of GABF, then get points based on the medals "their" breweries win.

i was listening to a brewing podcast this morning and they were recapping their weekend at GABF.  someone mentioned "fantasy brewing"... i was sure they were kidding.  apparently they weren't.

yada, i am breaking into one of my uber, special ride delivery rides of 120 minute this evening, because, you know, i can.  the day to day doles can decay you in this life, and you know what i miss, i miss, the grades.  i almost gave one to hutch the other day, or was it today, i cant remember, because this one beer, is getting me dr,unk.  the end.

i had a chance to taste two highly-touted IPAs last night at brouwer's hopfest...  barley brown's tankslapper and hop truck crossing (made with fresh mosaic).  both were incredible in their own unique ways, but tankslapper was the best IPA i've ever had. easily. if headytopper was a unit, which often times i feel like it is, it'd be equivalent to 1.5 headytoppers.

Hopefully Stone isn't near this crematorium or that smokey stout you're tasting might not be from the malt or barley.

17 years in DC area, and only my third trip to Philly...(did go to Philly more often when I lived in Baltimore for three years).

Of course I've read much about the Philly beer scene, so decided to combine some beer spots with kid spots over the weekend in the Philly area....

Both Tired Hands (in Ardmore) and Earth, Bread, and Brewery were top notch. All of the house beers I tried from both were excellent (the former serves only their own, the latter a mix). Food was excellent, and laid back ambiance (probably helped that we went to both at lunch time) was very cool. Kid friendly vibe at both. I'll be back to both.

Monk's, on the other hand, was a bit overrated. Not that it was bad, but it wasn't great like it was supposed to be. Loud with football fans and plagued by indifferent service. Probably won't return.

Philly area was nice too. Enjoyed stops at Valley Forge, Ben Franklin Museum, Smith Memorial Playground, and hiking in Fairmount Park.

Hit up Alpine, Societe and Council brewing in person - all were amazing - The Pupil at Societe is fantastic as are the tart saisons at Council

had to surrender a bottle of pliny at the airport because my bag was 52 lbs
