I got shut out of everything this weekend so I don't have much to look forward to until next week.
So here goes:
Carla Bozulich's Evangelista
Autechre
Gary Higgins
Maybe that green apple thing
-
New Pornos on the 14th
Gossip in NYC on the 15th
Autechre at the Black Cat.
Eisley at the 9:30.
-
New Pornos - 14th
Carla Bozulich - 16th
Autechre - 17th
-
Colin Meloy on Sunday
The New Pornographers on Tuesday
The Gossip are touring again? Any dates locally??
-
Are Tom Greenwood and Joanne Robertson still slated to play at the Carla Bozulich show? JOMF's myspace has them listed as playing the cake shop in NYC that night.
-
Cake Shop site has them listed too.
So I guess not.
Unless they're like...super-human or something.

you should've taken me up on the spoon ticket ;) i knew that the friend i'd planned on going with would back out, so i found myself scraping the bottom of the barrel for a companion!
friday - nicolay & kay (black cat)
sunday - green apple
-
Well I've been getting over a cold the last couple days and part of my not making an effort to find tickets to hot chip, spoon or nada surf was due to my not wanting to go out while sick. Would've more than likely skipped Yeasayer on thursday if I didn't have an advance ticket.
Bummer about your predicament though; normally, I would've been all over that ticket.

It's their only US show so far this year, and it's a preview show for their new stuff. CANT WAIT!

Well, hopefully, it's a harbinger of a US tour in the near future. Have fun and let us know what you think of the new songs!
-
Originally there were 3 dates: NYC, LA and SF.
They canceled LA and SF due to poor ticket sales I'm guessing.

Maybe the backstage buffets weren't sufficient.

I'm slightly torn between Carla Bozulich and Dead Meadow.
Both should be good shows.
Chances are I'll get another chance to see Dead Meadow much sooner.
-
Didn't 9353 used to be listed as playing The Velvet Lounge on 4/18? They're not listed now. I guess I'll cross that one off my list.
Looks like just Dead Meadow for me this week. I'm surprised this one hasn't sold out yet.
-
I'm done with live music for this month.
I am taking my mom, wife, and daughter to a wine festival this weekend. Woohoo!
-
New Pornos tonight if I can stay awake.
Maybe Dead Meadow on Wednesday.
-
Did you tell them about how good you hip swayed to one of Nada Surf's songs? :D

9353 is back on for friday. they will headline. there was, unfortunately, some miscommunication between them and us.
i'm not surprised dead meadow isn't sold out. nobody in dc cares about them. last time i booked them at the warehouse (2006), they drew 48.
-
Iron And Wine and, uh, *cough*avril*cough*
-
I'm a little surprised more people from here aren't going to Gary Higgins.
Then again, that doesn't mean shit given that I thought Boris would've been a popular show on here too.

No, I'm really going. This 20 year old I'm seeing wants to go. Although, as full disclosure, I do own all three of her albums and don't hate the idea of attending.

I went and thought it was a good show. Her (and Dan's) banter with the crowd totally amused me.

[/b][/quote]This totally reminds me of that Mr. Show sketch of the tape-delayed call-in show.
David Cross: "NO NO NO, pet care was LAST WEEK'S TOPIC, which we're broadcasting next week, and this week we're talking about the elderly! STOP CALLING ABOUT PETS, YOU'RE TOO LATE! Next caller!"
"Hi, my grandmother has a problem?"
"Yes! Finally! Okay, what is her problem?"
"Well her cat is sick and I wanted to talk about how to care for sick pets."

Perhaps this will help:
How to enjoy a concert performed by Autechre (http://interimlover.livejournal.com/528777.html)
Though I for sure am going to have my Etymotics in, I'm not too crazy about hearing loss.
I have never seen them live, but am looking forward to tonight, despite mixed bag live reviews. It'll at least be interesting.

The Autechre show was pretty great in my opinion. I mean, a lot of people weren't all on the floor raving out like I expected, but it was really nice! I was standing in front of the soundboard for the majority of the show and it was all good from my perspective. I did notice that Autechre seems to make pervy-dad-IDM now, since 75% of the audience looked like they'd either (a) been on the Sex Offenders Registry, or (b) just left home for the first time in 2 years. Made for GREAT people-watching.

That just about made me spray my coffee! I didn't find the crowd that pervy, but I did really enjoy the show. I couldn't believe how much was going on in their music. I enjoyed Rob Hall's first set much more than his second. I had pretty low expectations for Massonix from things I had read, and was pleasantly surprised. Other than some boredom during his guitar noodling, I thought it was pretty solid.
Didn't do much people watching during Autechre, as my eyes were closed for a lot of it. Easier to enjoy the music and that way I would not be distracted by the glow-stick guy or the blinding phone next to me.

I'm telling you, the cutting the lights out thing was kinda awesome, but it was just a tad bit creepy with the crowd that was out. The last thing those guys needed was a shroud of darkness to add to their anonymity. Especially the lesbian-dad couple that was vigorously making out in front of me, and more specifically the pervy gentleman that was touching himself while staring at said couple. Très gross. Someone please take the ecstacy pills from the old people.
-
Autechre's set was pretty good. Much dancier than their studio material; I think maybe 2-3 tracks were recognizable to me.
Both of Rob Hall's sets bored me but Masonix was alright.
Still pissed at myself for not knowing that Lights were playing at the velvet lounge while Hall was on.

OK, I really have to stop drinking coffee and reading your posts. I am glad that I was a ways in front of the soundboard and missed all of the "action" that was going on behind me. I did notice that there were a lot of gay couples there last night, which I found a bit surprising. Did I miss an Autechre memo?
-
so did Autechre only played for an hour? or longer?
i had to skip last night's show..so tired.
-
Maybe 70 minutes.
11:30-12:40 give or take.
-
next week I'll see:
Booka Shade
Goldfrapp
Simian Mobile Disco
Cut Copy
The Mae Shi
all in SF during Coachella weekend...cheaper way than going to Coachella, though Coachella still ROCKS because of Aphex Twin, Portishead, and Kraftwerk.

if this board had auto-signatures (or if i was as disciplined as MindCage to copy/paste one every time i post), i'd add this line to it. awesome.
-
That ecstacy/old people rant was *almost* as brilliant as xneverwherex's "great white" post in the bands that have blown stuff up thread.
Gary Higgins was excellent; even better than I could've hoped for. Nice tasteful jamming out of many of the songs from Red Hash. Got everything I wanted to hear except for "It Didn't Take Too Long." The dude on keys put a lot of nice spacy washes into all the slower songs which was a nice touch. Hope to see him again soon.
-
Next week I'll see:
Eisley on Monday.
*MAYBE* Goldfrapp in SF on Saturday.
*MAYBE* Simian Mobile Disco/Cut Copy in SF on Saturday.
If not G-Frapp, then definitely B-52's in Philly and DC.
It all depends on whether or not priceline accepts my bid for a flight.

gary had a great time and said he'd love to come back. i might try to bring him down for free folk phantasmagory V. the red hash songs were amazing, and his new songs are pretty good, too. i wasn't a huge fan of the midi synth stuff, but he played it as tastefully as possible. higgins' vox were top-notch.

Noted.
I think I only have Kohoutek/Cloudland Canyon next week.
-
And maybe An Albatross in Providence.
And if anyone cares, Colin Meloy last night was pretty good. And the Pabst theater is the best sounding concert venue I've ever been to.

An Albatross may be one of the crazier shows I've been to. If I remember correctly, I was sore the next day.
-
Should make for a long tiring workday/flight back home the next day. But from what I've heard about their live show, it should also be worth it.
-
So anyone going to Autechre?
Looks like it'll be a late one.
Yes, I'm bumping the thread from the last Autechre show.
Yes, I miss Firebugg McGee.

Doubt I'm in the right tax bracket.
The fact that I'm on here regularly calling for the death of capitalism most likely also hurts my chances.

People always act like we're huge capitalist enthusiasts. That's just not true. We're pretty open to any political system that continues to foster multigenerational wealth. I'm open to a return to feudalism.
