Bardo Pond V. Love is All
Another face-melting psych V. Swedish pop dilemma...
Love is All is closer but Bardo Pond is the rarer show nowadays.
-
I've been buried in work this week. Where is the Bardo Pond show?

Love is All were just OK opening for Of Montreal...
-
12/6 at Talking Head. And it looks like it's only $8?

^Did you make it to BBML/Fursaxa last night?
If so, thoughts?
I felt like the venue itself detracted a lot from both of their sets.

The Damned vs. Clutch
-
I've been having that one, too.
I'd be going to Clutch for Russian Circles more than anything else and I'm sure they'll be back around soon.
-
Is this thread your blog thread, like Vansmack and Julian have? I've lived in Baltimore/DC region for 14 of the last 15 years, and have never once had a "show conflict".

The Damned. Who knows when they'll be back. I think it's been something like 7 years since the last time they played here.
-
Well mine and Joe's and anyone else's. But it'll probably be mostly mine and Joe's. Maybe you need to listen to more music?

I dunno, I probably have 1000+ cd's/lp's/cassettes. Though I'd still enjoy listening to most of them, there's many I'd see no need to see live, and many others where once was enough for a lifetime.
Some people just place a higher priority on seeing live music, I guess. I'm content seeing 12-15 live shows a year.

Gotcha.
-
And I do occasionally see listings for two bands I like playing on the same night. But I can't recall ever having to make a choice between two "nust see" shows.

ok. The Damned it is. I love the new album, too.

12-15 is what we average each month :p

Glowsticks are where it is at and the staff at 930 felt they to take them away to shove them up their butts especially that really fat guy who works there

thanks for sharing.
for those who's life style allows for more shows (and/or somewhat pathetically revolves around seeing live music :p ), show conflicts arise all the time. sorry you can't relate.

sirius sat. radio or the regular radio?
now we know why it took so long for the merger to go through. 85 percent of siruisxm channels are now censored because of secret spin that has allowed sprint to control the rules ( http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/t...censorship.html (http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/t...censorship.html) ) how sad. all because of howard stern and the government's attempt to "get him." what an impact one person can make, is truly amazing!
-
Very impressive first post. Welcome to the 9:30 board. Can't wait to hear more of your brilliance.

Well clearly the guy had a show conflict, and he stated it thusly. I say, applause!
But without presuming who he refers to as the "really fat guy", I'll say that there's no reason for someone named "Glowstick" -- nor anyone who advocates their use or claims them to be "where it is at" -- to be disparaging anyone.
Edit to add:
I've been singing the "Where it is at" version of Beck's tune for a few minutes now and it's awesome. Makes me feel slightly Ukrainian or something.
-
i just loved Love Is All when they opened for Of Montreal. I had a conflict up here, but Mercury Rev won out since my friend already bought the tix. That always solves all the problems.
-
kohoutek is supposed to open that bardo pond show, though there seems to be some confusion with the other band (the one cotton casino is in). we'll see.
bardo pond might also be coming down to dc on 12/20. i'm working on that now. we're doing a hawkwind tribute night and i'm trying to get them to headline.
-
Buzzkill...a Hawkwind tribute on the 20th? I'll be in Chicago for work. Want to move it up a week :)

Good choice. I heard this may be their last tour of the U.S.

Excellent. Not too big on the Talking Head after going there the other night, honestly.

I don't normally have show conflicts but this one is tough for me.
December 20th:
1. Ryan Adams and Oasis (I want to take my dad to this)
vs.
2. The Trend (A really awesome mod punk band from back home are doing their last show)
I know for many, it's a no brainer of Oasis. At the same time, it's tough to pick because I know Oasis aren't coming back for a long time and it's not everyday Ryan Adams tours with a band he loves, And then there's The Trend who won't play another show together again probably ever. Either way, this feels like a challenge and question of nostalgia.
-
so turns out i just ran into a conflict.
Dodos @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple
of Montreal @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
although i already bought a dodos ticket, im leaning towards of montreal, as they never play small venues in nyc anymore. i figure dodos should be back again soon sometime and i dont think theyre as popular as of montreal, but i honestly have no clue.
anyone??
-
I'd only see Of Montreal again if they promised to play nothing but pre-Aldhils Arboretum material but that's just me. :)
-

LOL. good to know.
has anyone seen the dodos? im curious to know what ill be missing if i dont see them. ive seen of Montreal a number of times, but never seen the dodos. They sound great but theyre also playing with The Walkmen who I have no intention of staying around to see. Perhaps I can figure out how to do both, but thats prob very unlikely.
-
I've missed the Dodos every time they've been through here this year which is plenty.
-
i would definitely pick the Dodos, but i dont really like Of Montreal all that much, so.
-

yes - it seems theyre here quite a bit which was my thought. i figure my chances are more likely that theyll come around again before of Montreal. Decision is made - assuming I can even buy the tix. hopefully its not like the franz ferdinand fiasco. if thats the case guess im going to the dodos :)

just to add to the conflict of the 16th - this sounds pretty cool.
Things will come full circle on this Tuesday night in December, when Sam and James reunite in a context that will be part conversation, part consternation, and part Ultimate Fighting.
Sam Lipsyte, author of "Home Land" and "The Subject Steve," and a recently Guggenheimed novelist and Columbia professor, began his descent as the much feared Sam Shit, front-man of the internationally ignored Dung Beetle Rock Band. And Dung Beetle's engineer was one young James Murphy.
James Murphy, the man who resurrected disco via punk, is best known for his band LCD Soundsystem and his record label DFA. James Murphy, upon being crowned artist of the year in the Village Voice 2007 Pazz & Jop poll, stated: "I'm 37 years old. I'm 220 pounds. I'm a producer. I've got about as much likelihood of being a fucking frontman as Christopher Cross..."

Next thursday:
Boris/Growing/Clouds in Baltimore V. Skeletons/Kushti Rye Ergot/Max Ochs at the Velvet
Boris always put on a great show but the Velvet one is obviously more convenient and I've never seen Max Ochs and this new Skeletons album is pretty good so far. It reminds me a little bit of Dirty Projectors.
-
Neither :)
Just kidding - Skeletons if I were to pick.....

these guys rock!
-
Antony at a small venue vs. Andrew Bird at the 930 (vs. Flying to Nola for the Britney World Tour debut. Chick might not make it all the way through the tour.)
-
Antony.
-
Honestly, it's really between Antony and Britney. I mean, I feel like the trainwreck potential for this is HUGE, and I want to be there.
-
Autolux V. Motorhead V. Melvins/Weedeater/Down
Mono V. Polvo V. Jandek/Tim Hecker
-
Jandek wasn't great live when I saw him. He wasn't even good, tbh, very sloppy. I'd go to Polvo.
-
azaghal, where is polvo on the 26th? baltimore?
regarding jandek, no two performances are even remotely alike. it's all improvisation, whether it's solo jandek or with a band. and if it's with a band, each band member must have never played with the other band members previously.
i'm actually playing with jandek at this performance; he chose me amongst a list of local percussionists, so i am greatly honored. the other musicians are anton nikkila (from finland), alexei borisov (from russia), and pekka airaksinen (from finland, who founded the obscure but seminal '60s experimental/dadaist band the sperm). nikkila and borisov play electronics, and airaksinen plays keyboards, electronics, and various percussion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekka_Airaksinen
this will definitely be a strange jandek show, heavy on the electronics and strange percussion. there won't be much linear rock n roll, that's for sure.

Sat Sept 26- POLVO $15 Mainstage 9:00
-
damn. polvo and jandek in dc on the same night?
we just worked out the sonic circuits schedule for the 26th. i can't promise it will be to the minute, but we do have to follow this schedule closely:
jandek: 9-10
kotra: 10-10:30
ergo: 10:45-11:15
tim hecker: 11:30-12:15
gunter hampel: 12:30-1:15
you could see jandek first, run over to see polvo, and then get back to see some tim hecker or gunter hampel. that's a pretty killer night of music, imo.
-
There's no telling when Tim Hecker will be back and that new album of his is fantastic. I'm thinking I'll just stick around the velvet.
-
don't get me wrong, polvo has been amazing both times i've caught them in the past year, but sonic circuits will be special. saturday's lineup does not have one dud.
polvo and faust back-to-back...the black cat has redeemed itself of all those lame dance night cluttering up the weekend schedule. well, almost!
-

agreed. no way i'm missing hecker. i'll be camping out the velvet louge all night.
-
A friend almost talked me into going to one of those dj nights last week.
Now I'm torn between Sunn 0)))/Eagle Twin at sonar (the fact that this is at Sonar doesn't help this show) and the 9/23 SC lineup. Fern Knight are always great.
-
same night as Mono at RnR Hotel...
-
I think I'm going to go to Sonic Circuits. Going to be up the day before for YYYs and the ability to buy tickets in advance makes attending the Velvet Lounge a more palatable option.
-
Dean Wareham (U St Hall) vs Kraftwerk early show
I have a ticket for kraftwerk early show i got for 15$ but man i love dean (not to mention britta!) and he hasn't been in town in forever... since that free show at the national gallery of art where suddenly there were thousands of people wanting to see it... the power of free...
sell my $15? go see dean and then try to buy a ticket for the late kraftwerk show
maybe too ambititious for me these days...
can't help thinking I just know Dean would go see Kraftwerk if he was in my shoes!

I find his new album a tad boring, but I'd choose that over Kraftwerkin.
-
I couldn't turn down the $15 Kraftwerk ticket, either.
Dean will be back barring something unforeseen. No telling whether Kraftwerk will or not.
Yeah I know Florian's not there, etc. but will it really sound much different without him? Doubtful.

Ralf once said that Florian did nothing but stand in front of his table and press a few buttons since 1983. I guess they don't get along very well anymore.
At least, since he left, they started to play ~20 more older songs, although obviously they might only play a few of them tomorrow.
-
I mean if they still played any of the songs that featured his undeniably awesome flute playing, sure it would make a difference but they haven't done that since the early 70's.
The setlist is probably the same for the whole tour. BV has one of the NY ones up.
-
how long do kraftwerk play?
i could see kraftwerk takin stage at 7 and dean wareham at 830
i don't know that dean will every return to dc if he can't get a certain turnout at $15.....not unless it was a LUNA reunion..
he's just one of those guys i have to support if i can...like i said though, dean would be at kraftwerk... luna even covered neon lights..
-
The last Luna show at the 930 Club is up there as one of my favorite 930 memories...
-
kraftwerk will play for 2 hours at least
-
The last Luna show at the 930 Club is up there as one of my favorite 930 memories...
Luna really petered out which was a shame cause I love both Romantica and Rendezvous but have to admit that at the time I had kinda moved on.. everyone moved on.. the Black Cat shows were pretty sad affairs....
The 930 Luna shows were so great.... I'm sure some people know that a nice chunk of the Luna Live album was recorded at the 930 (The vinyl adds FOUR tracks btw..key)...
My favorite Luna memory has to be when in the midst of a depression in Argentina out of nowhere they showed up in Buenos Aires in 2002 ...I was in BA for about 18 months and nobody was coming cause there was no money.. I remember vaguely talking to them after the show.. asking Britta if she or they (can't remember) needed someone to show them the town ("No, we're leaving tomorrow...")......in my dreams she'd have said "Yeah why don't you show me around!"... I had no idea at the time that Dean and her were an item... probablythe South America tour, so weird as nobody knew them there, was an attractive proposition for Dean and Britta to get away from the US and any complications..
I would sacrifice 30 minutes of Kraftwerk to see Dean Wareham... his music means a lot to me.. but I'm still recoverin from nearly getting killed so we'll see if I make it out of the house. :)
I am listening to AUtobahn right now though...
-

I was surprised to see you doing a double header...might want to bring an extra perk or two
