Kosmo here using his festive alter ego...  I'll be spinning the tunes for the event.  Since it's a holiday party expect a bit of fluff to go along with the Holiday Classics.  My stocking is currently stuffed with christmas tunes.  Heres just a glimpse of what can be expected:

Root Boy Slim -"X-mas at Kmart"
Captain Sensible - "One Christmas Catalouge"
 El Vez -"Feliz Navidad"
 The Waitresses - "Christmas Wrapping"
Roy Orbison - " Pretty Paper"
The Dirtbombs - "My Last Christmas"
The Kaisers - "Merry Christmas Loopy Lu"
 Marvin Gaye - "Purple Snowflakes"
Dandy Warhols - "Little Drummer Boy"
Robbie Williams - "Walk This Sleigh"
Man or Astroman - "Frosty the Snowman"
The White Stripes - "Candy Cane Children"
 Slade - "Mary Xmas Everybody"
Ron Wood & Wizzard - "I Wish Everyday Could be Christmas"
 Wham! - "Last Christmas"
The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - "Fairytale of New York"

Seeing as Guiny isn't attending I'll be leaving the Big 80's Christmas compliation at home  :)

PM me at evilsanta if there is something you would like to hear, I'll try my best to honor any requests.  No guarantees though...

How about "I Was Born on Christmas Day" by St. Etienne? Or "Lonely This Christmas" by Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine? Those are 2 of my favorite Christmas songs. And "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders.

I think I have the 7" for "All I want for christmas is my 2 front teeth" and some other abominations from my youth.

Only Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron I know I have is the main song by the Buckinghams.

I used to have a great reggae christmas album.  It included such classics as:

 Santa is a Black Man
 Irie Christmas
Santa Claus is Skanking to Town

 and many, many more.

Any chance you have some of these non-stop hits?

Coldplay's cover of the Pretender's "2000 Miles" is available on their site, for a small fee to be donated to charity.

So is this a catered affair or bring something?  Still no word on anything like a secrete santa (as written by someone in college).

Maybe we should all bring a cool CD, and do one of the those gift exchange where we all draw #'s and 1 picks a CD, and then #2 picks, but they can take #1's choice, leading #1 to pick again. Or maybe #1 just gets to keep his pick.

 Or something...

Do we get to meet Seth? I've got an Exit Clov press kit with his name on it!

oh yeah! a chinese auction, i think it's called.. my family does that every christmas eve. if people are fun and like taking other people's gifts it works out a lot better (something tells me that this wouldn't be a problem with the loons). the big item my family always fights over is the "Beers of the World" goodness.

Quick rundown of how it works.. Let's say there's 30 people. Everyone draws a number. #1 has to open a wrapped gift from the pool. #2 can either take #1's or open another gift.. etc etc. That's why it sucks to be #1 because you may get stuck with a really crappy gift. It gets super fun when the fight is on for the best gift in the pool.

I just heard about this for the first time last night...The one difference being that #1 gets to go both first AND last, so still ends up with the premiere pick.

hmm that's new to me. that takes away from it. because it's always fun to make fun of the person who got #1 and just hope that they open the crappiest present!!

But given that in this case many people would not be excited by many of the CDs it would be harder for the huge fight to come about.  I could see everyone in the end taking their own gift home as they got something they would love to have themselves.

the chinese auction format sounds fun... who wants to set the guidelines.  one new cd? book? dvd? set a dollar limit and have the option to go trolling for used stuff?

How about the standards of $5 - $20.  I was thinking of a stack of 10 dollar CDs...Or a copy of a favorite book or two (undogeared).

it's nice to have gifts someone would actually like with a few gag ones thrown in for fun, just to make it more interesting. maybe between 5 - 20 bucks, so the range would be pretty good. what a fun idea!!

OK, I'll make the call here, the Rules of our Secret Santa. $10 worth of music, doesn't matter if its one disc or ten, but keep it all together. We draw numbers and first person takes a gift. The second person can either pick another gift at random, or just take a gift from one of the prior people's selections, causing the prior selctee to pick another gift. This goes on till the last person picks, and everyone is happy, or not.

Board members and guests can participate, but you have to bring the $10 worth of merchandise, or else you're just watching. One side note, we should make as much of an effort as we can to avoid getting someone stuck with something they already have, perhaps by trading off at the end of the affair. But knowing this group, it would scare me if I saw more than a CD or two I own.

Does this work for everyone? It's only $10.

I know Paige, Bagster, and flawd aren't coming, but is mostly everyone else coming? 20 to 30 folks, including guests?

Post by: kosmo vinyl on December 19, 2003, 12:25:00 pm
$10 is a great guideline... However I think it shouldn't be limited to just cds,  books, dvd should be options as well.  i'm also thinking that it might be fun for people to offer white elephants or be able to do regifting.  as long as those are around $10 in value as well.

charity rummage sales are often called white elephant sales... i'm guessing because lots of people would try to load white porclein elephants at such events thus they became know as white elephant sales

t'was a good night. thanks 930 staph, seth and kosmo! nice to finally put user names to actual live people.

now, i need to find an mp3 of the snoopy and red baron christmas song for kurosawa and brennser so they know what i'm talking about with the baron's voice in the song.

i still can't believe redsock didn't wear red socks.

a HUGE thanks to everyone that came out it was a great evening.  well at least i think so, seeing as i was doing my dj harry potter impression.  a good dj is heard but not seen  :D

thanks to the shadrach, evilsatan, eddie, that guy, twangirl and the rest of 9:30 staph that allowed us to use the backbar for the evening and put up with our hi-jinks.

in addition to doing "snoopy vs red baron", the royal guardsmen did "snoopy's christmas", which is availabe on the p2p networks.  would have downloaded it, but was feeling that i didn't want to be branded a criminal at the moment.

thanks again we'll have to do some other time... the debut of swagger perhaps?

Yes, thank you, Kosmo, for organizing it all and Shadrach for tending bar...that red shot drink cured my oncoming cold

Definite big thanks to Seth + Kosmo for getting this party started. Much thanks to Shadrach for the drinks, and thatguy for passing up on an opportunity to keep one of mankie's not-so-hot presents, so I got them both. (should I be happy about this?)

And mucho thanks to twangirl for talking up Exit Clov! It made my night. And who knew if you hang out at the club long enough you get birthday cake.

Seriously, about Exit Clov...I was ready to be underwhelmed but I actually thought they sounded pretty good. Unique sound, sweet, lush vocals, interesting musical subtleties...
Thanks for sharing the CDs with the group!

Yes, thanks to all who were involved in organizing the thing. It was a spur of the moment decision for us to go, but I'm glad we did. Good to meet some more board nerds, and see some of the old ones. Sorry we didn't get a chance to talk to everyone.

Twangirl, good or bad, tell us the Wilco story!

And I was a little disappointed I didn't get to see a meeting of Seth and Mankie.

Well I was there, Seth obviously chickened out!   ;)

I want to know how markie got his shiner.

I also want to know why kurosawa gave me a dirty look.

Redsock, you get two lame cd's from me and I get one from you..a good christmas one and all! (or whatever it was Tiny Tim said)

Rhett, like me, married way out his league didn't he?..being opinionated and not politically correct must be a turn on for the babes!

Bunglebud, you should be a DJ, you have the perfect face for radio!

Lulu....was it hot in there or just YOU? (you look mavalos)

I thought we may have seen Dupek seeing as the judge finally granted him un-supervised parole.

Thatguy, thanks for the boddies. I was feeling a bit dodgy to be honest but can't turn down a free beer...they'd never let me back in Manchester if word got out I had.

It was nice to meet everyone and put a face to the user names, wish I could've stayed longer but the retirement home has 11:00pm  curfew!

And Mankie, I didn't give you a dirty look! (Come on, it's me you are talking about. The one who is always teased for being too nice.) I wasn't feeling well, so maybe you misinterpreted... You left before I could say hello.

See you all in the New Year!

P.S. Thanks for the Exit Clov CD, redsock. I will give it a listen tonight.

I know so many people who think they can do it alone
They isolate their heads and stay in their safety zone
 What can you tell them?
What can you say that will make them defensive?
 Hang on to your ego
Hang on but I know that you're gonna lose the fight
They come on like they're peaceful but inside they're so uptight
They trip through the day and waste all their thoughts at night
Now how can I say it?
How can I come on when I know I'm guilty?
Yeah, hang on to your ego
Hang on but I know you're gonna lose the fight
