Title: The Jesus Lizard
Post by: mr. pretentious on June 10, 2009, 11:54:31 am
Miss P and I are seeing them at Pitchfork this summer, and I want to get acquainted with their material.  Tell me where I should start.  Goat?  Liar?

Those are both great ones to start with.  Also, please don't add a new Jesus Lizard topic unless there are DC-area dates :)

Also, they're the best live band ever.

mr. p/ms. p.

you will both LOVE the Jesus Lizard live show :)

saw them for the first time at Primavera Fest in Barcelona two weeks ago.  David Yow stage-dived into the crowd FOUR TIMES!  It was INSANE! I suggest you both be about 15 feet away from the stage, middle....unless you don't wanna catch a sweaty, balding, shirtless frontman with a big belly. I wish I did!

Four?  He must be getting old...

I still have a piece of his shirt from when they played the second stage at Lollapalooza (after performing on the main stage).  The thing smells like death...

Not to be Debbie Downer here, but when the Lizard played at the old club I don't ever remember Mr. Yow's feet ever touching the stage. That being said, it was 15 years ago and I'm glad to hear that he's still putting on that kind of show.

Sigh. I'll never forget my dad (RIP) speaking in his broken English with Duane Denison in front of our house about their touring Yugoslavia. Classic.

Agreed...their show at the old Black Cat was unreal.  I'm pretty sure I was on-stage more than Yow :)

Speaking of tours...

07-14 Nashville, TN - Exit/In
07-17 Chicago, IL - Pitchfork Music Festival
07-24 Seattle, WA - Capitol Hill Block Party
08-21 Kiewit, Belgium - Pukkelpop Festival
09-11 Monticello, NY - ATP New York Festival
10-14 San Diego, CA - Casbah
10-15 Los Angeles, CA Henry Fonda Theater
10-17 San Francisco, CA - The Fillmore
10-22 Portland, OR - Crystal Ballroom
10-24 Vancouver, British Columbia - Commodore Ballroom
11-07 Austin, TX - Fun Fun Fun Festival

MORE TO COME!!!!!!!

snailhook: i'm definitely in for 9/10 - i'd arrange to come home that night from NJ to DC, and "stop off" (aka spend the night) in philly.

i hope this means that other east coast dates are under negotiation, so i can catch more than one show :D

well, now it looks like ATP will be the only september east coast date, and they're doing something extensive in november.  i'm guessing philly on 11/2, baltimore on 11/3, and dc on 11/4 if carrboro is on 11/5.

Sorry, Charlie.  Actually, I have no clue...hell, I just found out that Mark Ibold is a full-fledged member of Sonic Youth.  I thought he was only a touring member.

I doubt it. Bobby seems to have a revolving door of musicians in his supportint cast. I saw Denison play in his band at Iota. I don't know much about Jesus Lizard, but can vouch for him being an excellent guitarist.   8)

I don't think any live music experience I ever have will top the intensity of that MBV show (except for another MBV show).

What is difference about the MBV reunion?  Honestly curious.  Is it the fact that new music may be coming?  Because I'm almost always for just hearing the classics on these reunions.  Call it nostalgic or whatever, but I'm cool with pumping my fists to "The Art of Self-Defense" as many times as possible.

Agreed on almost all accounts.  Still cant' believe MoB and Dino have put out actual new music that's good.  I was pretty psyched on the reunited Buttholes line-up, but then again, I pray to God they don't release any new albums.  Same, in a way, with the Jesus Lizard.  I'm not sure I'd be psyched on a follow-up to Blue.

Mission of Burma was pretty great.

mbv never really broke up

mbv dont have a dude singing about punching a chick and dragging her out of a truck, while thats great and all, i dont need to hear a dude pushing 50 and who gets nude on stage still trying. It's embarrassing

im not 16 anymore and dont need to hang around a bunch of dudes that still think amrep is the only label worth listening too, id rather hang around a bunch of dudes that listen to ride anyday.

Dear Mr. Hurwitz,
Thank you for bring Jesus Lizard to the club in November.  Now, please do not erect any kind of barrier between the crowd and the band for the show.  It is not really a Jesus Lizard show unless you can get to Dave Yow and he can get to you.  Don't worry we will be fine.

Thanks.

They don't use the barricade unless the band specifically requests it. At least that's what I've been told.

the barriers are there to only protect the crowd - the talent, and property, are also considerations.

They don't use the barricade unless the band specifically requests it. At least that's what I've been told.

i'd hope that at some point, common sense kicks in and the club unilaterally decides that barricades are needed.  not having them for bands like the prodigy or RATM would be irresponsible - how could staph assist the folks being crushed up front?

jesus lizard will sell well, but i'm not convinced they'll sell out the club.  it will be interesting to see if the club decides to put up the barriers.  i'm guessing they will.

but then where will I stand

uh, the usual: up on the side-stage balcony with the other juliettes.

That makes sense. And come to think of it, every show I've been up front for this year has had a barricade. Maybe it's become routine practice now?

Do you really think a barricade will stop David Yow? Methinks not.
Title: Re: The Jesus Lizard
Post by: nkotb on June 12, 2009, 12:19:05 pm
When I saw them at Lollapalooza, Yow was in the crowd 90% of the time, even on the main stage.  I think he was more than happy to climb down from the stage and back up over the barricade, which reminds me a good story...

So later on that day, they decided to play the second stage as well.  There were several non-band members watching from the side/back of the stage, and at one point, this 250+ lbs. guy decides to make a run for it and stage dive.  He takes as big of a leap as he could off the monitors, and came crashing down on the railing at gut level.  I still cringe when I think about him hitting that thing...although it probably would've been much, much worse had he hit the crowd.  Oof.

Do you really think a barricade will stop David Yow? Methinks not.

I have seen these guys at least 5 times in the 90s and every show was phenomenal.  A friend saw the Anaheim show on the current tour and it sounds like long-time fans will not be disappointed.  Quote from a friend that saw them in Anaheim :
"Equal parts sex, danger, comedy, dementia, and showmanship. David Yow's vocals sound like a kidnapping victim trying to scream through the duct tape. Plus he looks like he is having a siezure the whole time he is on stage while the band stands completely still and just stares at you. Nothing short of incredible."

How you you not go to that?
