Title: So I've been out of the musical loop...
Post by: ggw on July 30, 2009, 01:44:56 am
...this year.  Other than my iPod and the Underground Garage I haven't been listening to much or paying attention to the blogs.  I need to get back on track, lest I lose my aging hipster cred.  Please tell me the top 3 albums you've heard this year (that don't include the words "Animal" or "Collective").

Thanks.

St. Vincent - Actor

That's my favorite so far.  I'm a little out of the loop myself.  Been listening to alot of older Nick Cave stuff and trying to catch up.

My top records thus far:

Fever Ray ? very similar to the Knife, epic moody electronica that has cool sound twists and texture. some of the bass lines on this record are really catchy

Mastodon - a step even further into a more refined sound, but its still really great. every song does like a dozen different things, and its produced to within an inch of its life without sounding too glossy or polished. sounds incredible on a good audio system

Mos Def - had kind of written off his music but this album is great, very much hipster-hop as its got some sick guitar samples and is pretty anti-crunk. but its aggressive and immediate and sounds great

Jay Reatard - If you liked Blood Visions, you should like this. I haven't really had enough time to dig into it, and its on its surface less manic than BV, but he writes a great song and it'll grow.

Just pulled the new Pissed Jeans. I didn't much like Hope for Men but this one sounds fierce and much better put-together. I think its going to be really good.

Just not getting anywhere with the new Dino Jr album. Its good, I like it, but I never feel compelled to put it on.

Destroyer 666 originally seemed to be the greatest album ever, but I after a few spins, I kind of moved on. Worth a dl to see if it sticks though. Surely cannot fuck with that name.

Wooden Shjips' Dos is getting a lot of play. Mostly longer drone-y songs that rock. A typical "#8 of the year" type of record.

You just reminded me that I downloaded that Pissed Jeans a couple days ago.

Like I said before, the lyrics on the Jay Reatard kill it for me. I dunno; I'm used to him singing about killing, raping and torturing people and there is none of that here. At least he reworked "I'm Watching you" which might be the best stalker anthem ever.

welcome back ggw!

the new Brakes is good, including the quite amazing Hey Hey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sENDMAhS64

I like the Metric album

Pains of Being Pure at Heart are worth the hype - is it a little derivative? Sure. Can they write great catchy songs? Absolutely

I really like the SIlversun Pickups

A couple of killer songs on the new White Rabbits album including

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IClBpch9vmM

A lot of love for the new Future of the Left album (2/3rds of Mclusky) on the board

So Cow is a random emusic find - lo-fi, scratchy, 2 minute pop delights from Ireland

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25cEVTp892c

Also lots of great "singer-songwriter" stuff this year......M.Ward, Alela Diane, Laura Gibson etc etc

I was going to plug the new Future of the Left (Travels with Myself and Another), but I was beat to the punch.  It's the only thing i've listened to and thought "these guys deserve money for this effort because i'm going to continue listening to this" and went out and bought this year.

Actually, I bought the new Andrew Bird and it's good, but doesn't quite have the holding power for me that his previous stuff had.

The new-ish Heartless Bastards album is pretty enjoyable and not willfully "different" like so much of best-of-the-year lists I've seen, just good tunes. I've also played Say Hi's latest a lot.

the silversun pickups' latest effort falls into that category for me.  still love that album.

Quick notes:

I second the Silversun Pickups album.

The Harlem Shakes album is a solid if unspectacular listen, as is Metric.

Passion Pit has great moments on it ("Moths Wings")

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! - probably my favorite of their releases.

The Field's new record is good, if that's your thing.

Anyone heard the Dead Weather album?  I like the song they did on Conan.

Also like the new Phoenix, but wouldn't say it's a favorite.

I guess I'm in the minority on Silversun Pickups.  I was looking forward to it after loving their EP and last full album but this one hasn't connected.  Sounds overproduced and boring.

I do, however, love the Phoenix album.  Couple of really great tracks.

Other favorites have been the new Metric, Royksopp, Thermals.

Also liking the Obits, which I thought were obscure until I read this on Allmusic:  "After playing a single gig in New York City, a bootlegged live tape of the Obits made its way onto the internet (as does everything these days) and before long seemingly every hipster blogger who still thrilled to the sound of electric guitars was talking up the new band, with Sub Pop getting excited enough to sign the Obits before they could even get around to self-releasing a single."

Damn.  I feel like I've fallen victim to the latest hipster insult: "I overhyped your favorite band before you even knew they existed"

Yea, I just bought the CD/Poster, since the book was sold out, and I liked the album too much to not give them some money for it.

How is the book?

I never said I liked crabcore. I've only heard one song. I also watched a .gif bounce across my screen of the guitarist waltzing around like a crab. It was terrible music but a funny dance.

I say Hot Chip have absolutely nothing to worry about, seeing they have more than one dimension to them and this reeks of strictly being a vanity project.

so i just heard the new flaming lips song - silver trembling hands.

taking back everything bad i've said about the band recently.

it rules.  they rule.  the whole world now rules.  it's like they've gone back to the soft bulletin motive for introspective futurefaceorama of perceptive pleasure.  just no more blood in the face, hulk hands, and shooting confetti guns.

art brut is good, too.

I'm going to have to agree with Kosmo re: Discovery from what I heard of that album.

If the rest of this Andrew W.K. solo piano album 55 Cadillac is as good as the first three tracks, it'll make my top 5 for sure.
I can't believe that the guy who wrote "Party Hard" is capable of work this phenomenal.

I listen to mainly hip hop so here's a few if you're interested:

Tanya Morgan - "Brooklynati"
Slaughterhouse - "S/T"
Mos Def - "The Estatic"

There's more stuff but I'll have to dig around and see what else.....

Uh, Party Hard should've clued you in.  Nothing makes me pump my fist harder...and it's aces for getting over the hump during my long weekend runs.

I actually hadn't heard of this album, or this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Japan_Covers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Japan_Covers).  I was actually wondering what happened to him...he used to tour the DC/Baltimore area once every 6 months or so.

The new Idlewild is also very good, I got an early release copy for taking part in their subscription plan, hopefully it will see a proper release later in the year.  It has the feel of a band being very confident in their sound, blending together all their previous releases and adding in Celtic Folk/Rock influences that Roddy has been exploring on his solo records.   It's much more cohesive than their last record....

  Man, where IS Kurosawa, anyhow?

Great thread, ggw, as I too have been out of the loop for going on a couple years (I have no idea why...).  I've gotten a few things -- YYYs is great, just picked up Silversun Pickups, The Thermals, Pains of Being Pure of Heart, Tinted Windows (I LOVE this, but it is nearly bubblegum), Snow Patrol (call it lame, I love the new album).

Things I'll give some attention to based on feedback here:
St Vincent
Brakes
White Rabbits
Future of the Left
So Cow
Obits
Hot Chip

Yeah, some of these bands have been around for a while, but I've missed 'em.

Thx for recommendations all

the new mars volta disk is so tight and on point.  unlike the past two albums which have been lopsided and drowned out, failure fingerpaint attempts of pollock masterpieces (how an album that is possessed by a spirit conjured from a ouija board being so bad is beyond me), this new one is just where the boys need to be in their career.  i love this, that i saw the other day:

Along those lines, both albums The Intelligence put out this year are very good as well.
