Yes, it?s that time again, where you can get some of your money back from the Proprietor of the 9:30 Club.

Hello 930 Board Member,

You have been invited to join vansmack's Private Group in Yahoo! Sports Survival Football.

In order to join the group, just go to Survival Football, (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival)  Click the "Sign Up" button and choose to "Join an Existing Group", then "Join a Private Group". Then, when prompted, enter the following information...

Group ID#: 15351
Password: ninethirty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The object of 930 Survival Football is to be the last Active member of the 930 Board.

In order to accomplish this goal, you must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.

But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season.

If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated.

Our Group is limited to the first 50 people who sign up. There are two prize categories:

$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional ?High Stakes? $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week one.  To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (eg, vansmack*) on the yahoo site.

Best of luck, and in case you need to be reminded about previous results?

indeed.  would be nice to have more than 6 people in the pool - hard to get some decent smack-talk going with that number.

where's seth?  or has he finally conceded that us boardies know more about football than he does?

There's a change this year on the site.  You have until the 4:00 O'Clock ET game to make your pick (it used to be kickoff of the first game).

Might pick page currently says:

"Deadline to submit pick: 9/13/2009 1:00 pm PDT"

Not sure if this is a week one thing or not, but we can go by that this week.

Sorry, I'm not in a position to sell Stoli + cranberry for $8.

That said, I will challenge you once again to a one-on-one suicide sidepool: my $100 up against a +1 VIP balcony upgrade.

The "settings" page on our Group site says the deadline is Sunday at 1:00PM EDT.

Also, based on the language of my Deadline Reminder e-mail, it sounds as though the deadline is set at the group level.

"Hello ggw1357,
If you have not yet made selections for this week's games, you must enter your picks before your group's selection deadline passes or you will be Eliminated."

Checking that now.....

I have two options:

(1) 5 minutes before start of first game or (2)  1 PM PDT.

Anybody have a preference?

(1) 5 minutes before start of first game

That really kind of screws up Thursday game weeks....

And yes it says EDT not PDT.  West coast bias....

Right now I'm leaning towards leaving it at Kickoff of the first Sunday game unless GGW is the majority and not the minority.

Actuallythe more I think about it, High Stakes should rule.

If Seth and GGW want 5 Mins before first kickoff, then so be it.

But decide sooner rather than later so I can get the message out....

i like 1 PM PDT (4 EDT).  in fact, i'm in favor of letting folks pick any game that hasn't started yet, i.e. any time before kick-off of monday night football... in case someone pulls an eros.

I don't have that option in the settings.

I only have (1) 5 Minutes before kickoff or (2) kick off of the first Sunday game.

i prefer 1 PM PDT, AKA 4 PM EDT (option #2)... if that is indeed an option.

anyone else?

Yes, I said I was in error above.

It's 1 PM EDT not PDT.

It's really wierd though because the settings say 1 PM EDT as one of my options, but when I make my pick it clearly says "Deadline to submit pick: 9/13/2009 1:00 pm PDT" which is what caused the confusion...

I would prefer the deadline being before the week's first game but it's not a strong preference.  If you and others prefer the Sunday option I can go along with that.  I defer to your commishness.

Same with me.

The group "settings" state that the deadline is Sunday @ 1:00PM EDT but when I click on my pick it says 9/13/2009 4:00PM EDT.

latest message from yahoo: "Please note that we are aware of the Sunday 1pm ET deadline bug that is preventing some users from entering their picks. We are working swiftly to fix it. Thank you for your patience."

If you want Tom to hold the money, that's fine, but you and GGW are old hands at exchanging winnings....

17 People in the Pool this year (down 2 from last year).

7 People in the sidebet (same as last year).

2 players in an entirely new sidebet.

Eliminated in Week 1

Nobody. However for those that stayed up last night to watch the Chargers/Raiders game, San Diego almost knocked people out in the first week for the second year in a row.

Picks

8 - Baltimore
5 - New Orleans
2 - San Diego
1 - Seattle
1 - Atlanta

Jonah Takalua (TEN)
CFLers (GNB)
ggw* (GNB)
SweetPicks?* (GNB)

Ouch.  And for the third straight year, our fearless leader can't get past week two.  I've been thinking about how to handle the playoff between Seth and GGW - nobody wants to see a tie.  I can set up another pool (but I can't control for your first and second round picks) or you both can email me your pick before kickoff Sunday and I'll share them at kickoff on Sunday morning so you're both aware of each others picks.

Picks

7 - Washington
5- Green Bay
3 - Minnesota
2 - Tennessee

well, i am just saying. there is an option on Yahoo for more than one strike. And i do know a few ppl who are in some that have 2 or 3 strikes. Its not crazy stupid. Especially if you find your pool is usually over by week 8 or 9.

how long did it go last year, i forget. (as i was out in week 2 of course)

I'm pretty sure Venerable Bede and myself won in week 5 or 6 last year as we were the only 2 left and we both went out that same week. Not sure about the high rollers. I think it was even a few weeks earlier.

You could be right Sparx...I was on the campaign trail last year at this time and really don't remember much about last fall.

Don't forget to get your picks in by KO Sunday.  I will let the group know who picked who in the Deathmatch after kickoff.

Eliminated in Week 3

Thus far nobody, however 3 people still have the Cowboys tonight: Miss P, 6949 and smackie.  That's quite a threesome....

Picks

3 - Dallas
2 - Baltimore
2 - Green Bay
2 - Philadelphia
1 - New Orleans

In the Big Money pool, as mentioned before it was a free play weekend as all three picked Baltimore.

Sorry, Oktoberfest got in the way of my Commish duties this weekend.

In the big money pool, Seth and GGW picked the 49ers and Dr. Phibes picked Indy.  All three won.

Eliminated in Week 4

Two weeks in a row, nobody was eliminated, although venerable sent me a text thinking he had been eliminated with a tie in Cleveland.  Hilarious.

Picks

4 - NY Giants
3 - Indianapolis
1 - Chicago
1 - San Francisco
1 - Cincinnati

i was watching cbs's post-game show and they showed an incomplete pass that was described as the 4th down play. . . .i turned off the tv and went and did something else, assuming it would end in a tie, and sent the text.  20 minutes later i went ahead and checked the final score to find out that the bengals won...and that cbs was wrong (course, i shouldn't have been surprised by that).

After being knocked out in the 1st week the first few years, making it to week 6 is like running a marathon. I barely survived week 5 with my Dallas pick (thanks Miles Austin). I wasn't that comfortable with the pick to begin with, but I'd already used up what I felt were my "sure thing" match ups earlier in the season. Now it's all gambling and prayers from here on out.

Nobody was eliminated in week 7 so I didn't update last week.

In the big money pool, Seth, GGW and Phibes all won again.

Eliminated in Week 8

baby's first football pool* (venerable)

Picks

5 - San Diego
1 - Chicago
1 - Arizona

So it's a showdown in the $100 pool between me and Midget Porn Star (serpent boy).  6 people left fighting it out in the $5 pool.

Venerable left me alone with his child yesterday so that I would feel badly about his baby losing her first gambling pool, but mom insists on raising her a Cubs fan so I figure she should get used to losing.  However, comdedic gems all around if if you could have seen Mrs Venerable give him the what for for picking the Cardinals over her preferred Bears.  I really should have filmed it for the group...

We're getting down to the end now, so if you haven't paid yet, you should do so.  Instructions on the yahoo site.

Eliminated in Week 9

shadrach

Picks

5 - Atlanta
1 - Green Bay

5 people left fighting it out in the $5 pool, with two in the $100 pool.

Interstingly enough, shadrach had not yet used Atlanta and bucked the trend of nearly 50% of all pool participants (and 83% of 9:30 particiapnts) and went with Green Bay.  That usually ends with him either winning it all or being eliminated - there rarely is a solo pick like that that ends up with another week to survive.

We're getting down to the end now, so if you haven't paid yet, you should do so.  Instructions on the yahoo site.

This is actually a mistake (it happens when people use multiple names across message boards).  The head-to-head matchup is between me and Dr. Phibes, who is having quite the run this year.  And yes, I said that hoping that the gambling gods will notice and jinx him this week.

My apologies.

And then there were three...

I'd like to thank the Raiders, who once again upset a team from the Eastern time zone, tired from the flight to Oakland and worried about getting tetanus from the fans.

Remember to get those picks in early for Green Bay over Detroit, or Dallas over Oakland -- our two network broadcast Thanksgiving games.  Of course, where I'll be on Thursday, there's no NFL Network, and thus no way to see the only interesting game, Giants vs Denver.

In the big-big money pool, Seth and Phibes both won, but GGW is out a grand (Cincy).

Eliminated in Week 11

Child Please (Cincy)
D.C. Snipers (Cincy)

Picks

2 - New Orleans
2 - Cinncinatti
1 - Arizona

Phibes, Crevers and Smackie are left fighting it out in the $5 pool, with Phibes and Smackie in the $100 pool.

When I was listening to the Sports Guys podcast with Cousin Sal last week, Cousin Sal said the Cincy game was ripe for an upset and demanded that they take the Raiders and tease it.  I shit you not.
