I'll be shocked if we see a better game than last night's DET-MINN playoff game, but we can hope.
Usually I write some 15 paragraph diatribe about why this Angel team will shed the Red Sox in the first round, but I can only be wrong so many times. I will say this though - all of the Red Sox fans I know are WAY too overconfident about "it's only Anaheim - we own Anaheim!" and making their date with NY. The baseball gods will chortle.
PREDICTIONS
AL
Anaheim in 5
Yankees in 4
NL
Phillies in 3
Cardinals in 4
-
Cliff Lee was the man yesterday. I love watching pitcher complete a game. I thought they might pull him in the ninth but he powered through. The wind seemed to affect the Rockies more than the Phillies. Good luck for them I guess. I hope Hamels is back to 2008 form for today. At least its not going to be a Rockies sweep like 2007.
-
Yep, Cliff Lee was a man last night. I was shocked the Dodgers were able to rough Carp up last night. He had dominated them all season (all of his career actually).
-
This Sawx fan is not overconfident. Not sure who these friends are, but they probably havent watched many Sox games vs teams with half decent starting pitching. Good luck tonight and all weekend.

agreed. none of my sawx-luvin' friends are expecting a cake-walk.

Oddsmakers pick Yanks, Cards Series
LAS VEGAS -- Oddsmakers in Las Vegas have picked the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals as favorites to meet in the World Series and think New York has an overwhelming chance to win its first title since 2000.
(...)
Las Vegas Sports Consultants set World Series odds for Boston at 9-2 and the Angels at 11-2, and Rood said public support has been behind Los Angeles, despite the Angels losing 12 of their last 13 postseason games against the Red Sox dating to 1986.

that first base ump should not be allowed to officiate another game. he's either been bought off, or is blind.

I was waiting for this. Boston manages 4 hits all game and CJ Buckner will be the talk of Boston radio tomorrow...good - the fans can focus on Buckner and not the fact that their team was flatout outplayed.
He didn't cost Boston any runs....nor did he gift Anaheim any runs (Kendrick did not score either time). But yes, those calls were atrocious. Neither was close AT ALL...
The only call that cost a run was calling Hunter out at third in the 7th (I thought he was safe), but then again I'm not at all upset about a 5-0 vs 6-0 game - a shutout is a shutout.
Nonetheless, I have three words of advice: LEARN TO THROW
-
there is no question, boston was out-played. lester started out fine but lost steam as the innings went on. re: LEARN TO THROW, no kidding. that was some horrible defense on the sawx's part. had the throw to first been a little more on target there would have been no room for buckner's bad call. and while those calls didn't directly result in runs being scored, i'm sure they bugged (i.e. distracted) the sawx to no end. after those calls, do you think youkilis went back to the dugout with his head in the game? of course not. not an immediate game-changer, but no team would ask to have those distractions thrown at them.
good game on the angel's part. lackey isn't as flashy a pitcher as lester, but ultimately he was much more effective. i know which quality i'd rather have right now.

while i i agree with the points of poor throws and that it didnt "technically" cost him more than one run. you can't deny it changes the whole outcome of the game. Firstly, Abreu struck out before that ever happened, but that beautiful pitch was called a ball. so Lester has to pitch to one extra batter. Then the first Kendrick incident allows Hunter to be at bat with 2-men on.
I counted three complete crap calls. and a) everyone who knows me knows that i NEVER complain about officiating. (that second call was the worset i may have ever seen and b) if those calls had been the other way, Angels fans would have been bitching and smackie, you'd be agreeing, so dont forget!
series has just begun! and we dont get shut out twice in a row!

Maybe the Red sox shouldn't have traded Manny since he was the only one that would beat up Youk when he gets in one of his "moods." Oh wait, that's just how he is. He's a head case and maybe he was already upset that he was 0-2 with a strikeout by the time the first bad call happened? What's your excuse for that?
By the time the second bad call happened it was already 3-0 and the Sox were being badly outplayed. How 'bout you guys start complaining that they didn't gut it out when faced with adversity? Where's the "Cowboy up" when you need it?

Wrong wrong wrong wrong. So by going by your ridiculous apologist theory, the bad call in the third was so disruptive to the team, it meant that Mathis does not bat until the fourth. So he strikes out. Aybar doubles, figgy sacrifices, and THEN the strikeout should have been called, thus ending the inning? How ridiculously apologistic can we be here? The only thing worse than CB Buckners eyes is TBS pitch Track. It's been off in every playoff game. They shold just get rid of it. Anyhow, fine I'll go with your theory, Abreu strikes out. Hunter bats in the top of the 5th, hits a solo shot and the Angels win 1-0. Are you happy now? The Angels tack on two more and it ends 3-0. It doesn't change the fact that THE RED SOX MANAGED 4 HITS. It wasn't CB Buckner or the poor defense, it was the utterlack of offense. They were mystified by Lackey and a 40 year old Darren Oliver. Get over it.

BTW - I'm shocked that we're 6 posts into this and not one post on Matt Holliday trying to use his cup to catch a ball costing his team the game and probably the series....

Hahaha, that's fucking great!

also, for the record. i never said the Sox lost because of those calls. But come on, the game is a chain reaction of events and almost none of them can be isolated.
a friend of mine even pointed out that Youkilis being fuming mad (as Youk can get) at Buckner, could have cost him to have a bad at bat with the bases juiced later in the game. I mean, just saying, its not that easy.
and yes, we can all agree pitch trax is a joke!
edit: and i should have known having a Buckner anywhere NEAR first base in the post-season was gonna turn sour!
-

And if Youk had hit a grand slam all the Sawx faithful would have been saying he did it because Buckner pissed him off. "It just goes to show you - you shouldn't piss off the youk - he's wicked good!" in my best meathead Boston voice.
He's a head case that the fans love when it works in their favor and use as an excuse when it doesn't. The rest of league is pretty sure it's gotten old. I'll leave it to shoeshine to tell us where the Youk reaction ranks on the reasons people hate the Red Sox....

Hey Cole Hamels! Why didn't you and your wife schedule a C-Section for last Thrus or Friday so you could have had your head in the game yesterday. I was excited for Myers return but that excitment faded quickly. How can he make 12M a year?
-

Yeah, Cole Hamels! You should always tell your wife to have an extremely painful procedure and a scar for the rest of her life so idiotic sports fans without lives aren't subjected to the whims of your newborn child! Baseball is way more important than family!!

Agreed. Very much so.
Haven't been part of a c-section, but I would think that there's actually much less pain involved in the actual c-section procedure than in giving birth natuarally. It's the recovery from the surgery that's the real bitch.
But yeah, thumbs down to all unnecessary surgeries. Which many c-sections are.

i wonder where these two kids came from???

Since it was pretty clear that it was going to happen that day (they talked about it the whole time), why not schedule Hamels to pitch Game 3, after the off day? He would have a clearer mind and probably a better performance. I think this is Manuel's fault, not Cole's fault.
BTW - does anybody know if the kid was black? Would have been awesome...
-
That pitch on Juan Rivera wasn't even close!!! Did you see pitch Trax??!?!?! The umpires are ruining any chance we have of winning this game??!?!?! This unbelievable - oh the agony???!?!? It's going to be in his mind the whole game - he's ruined. RUINED I tell you!!!1
Didn't want to dispappoint my fans..it's only the second inning.

Pitcher A: 16-8 in 33 starts, 3.75 ERA, 7.42 K/9, 1.24 WHIP
Pitcher B: 17-6 in 32 starts, 3.86 ERA, 8.43 K/9, 1.19 WHIP
Pitcher C: 15-8 in 32 starts, 3.41 ERA, 9.96 K/9, 1.23 WHIP
Pitcher D: 11-8 in 27 starts, 3.83 ERA, 7.09 K/9, 1.27 WHIP
Two of these pitchers are "aces" and the other two are "solid number two guys." When did the ability to strike guys out make you an "ace" because otherwise these guys are pretty damn close?
The truth is if Lackey (D) and Weaver (A) pitched on the East coast, they'd get the same respect as Beckett (B) and Lester (C).
-
I'm all ears Sox fans...who cost you this time?
4 more hits - the same thing that cost you last night...
Twins fans on the other hand, have every right to be upset. I'd be furious, then remind myself that I stranded 17 runners and probably not be furious any longer. Just upset.

can you compare these pitchers post-season records? perhaps that has something to do with it.
(i dont have any idea of what they are)

Not right now (though I can give you the 2009 numbers if you'd like them because they're fresh on my mind), but if that were the case, I would then urge the broadcast team to use adjective's like "post-season ace" rather than simply calling these guys "true aces of the staff" rather than "no true ace on the staff, but they have a lot of solid number two starters."

say, smackie, does the weight of that chip on your shoulder cause you to walk around in circles?
maybe that explains your circular arguments...
-
buck martinez is a douche, dont let him piss you off!
and as i am typing this, finally, 2 runs!!! i heart fenway
-
We played like ass and completely deserved to lose. That being said, I now hate and wish death upon Abreu and Aybar the rally monkey. And no, he's not a monkey cause of his skin color, but because he actually runs around like an obnoxious monkey.
-
I'm glad Boston lost because once the Tigers are out of contention, my only concern with the sport consists of the Yankees losing, and the Angels have a much better chance of making that a reality.
-
say, smackie, does the weight of that chip on your shoulder cause you to walk around in circles?
Red Sox fans should know what it's like to carry a chip on their shoulder. This wasn't about the last 3 years - I've carried that chip since 1986 when Hendu broke my 12 year old heart. I was at that game and I was devastated -cried for days. When they rolled him out to throw the first pitch today, I laughed. Then he did the jump spin and pointed at the Angel dugout (jokingly, I know) I was filled with rage. I can't begin to tell you how good this feels, but again, Sox fans should know.
There were demons exorcised for me today. And exorcised in dramatic fashion...
-
no, we get what your saying smackie. and now, you'll get to know what its like to be smacked about by the Yankees next week.
as much as i may be bummed out about the loss. no one, i repeat, no one, will be beating NY this year. so at least i wont have to endure 4 beatdowns at the hand of Jeter and A-Rod this year.
good luck to ya though, i certainly wont be rooting against the Angels.

yeah, its funny cause 1986......ugh, that Henderson homerun was like....pretty much forgotten within 2 weeks.

Thanks to a Saturday wedding and an early tee time Sunday I slept through game three. According to the sports radio show I was listening to as I went to Wawa it was only one of the top five Phillies games evar. I did get to watch last night and I'm glad. Howard knocks in two in the bottom of the ninth for the tie and Werth gets a RBI go ahead single. If I was a cliched sports writer I would say that this and a Lidge (who has shook off the regular season woes) define "clutch". Hopefully they can handle the Dodgers as easily as last year.
-
@ vamsmacks brother in law - just got to my seats at the dodger game in row dd. thats a good omen.
-
Well that was uncharacteristic of the Halo's I've watched all season. I hope this means we got that out of our system.
That sinker/screwball pitch that tailed away from the right hand batter was simply disgusting all night. Not on my scouting report for CC and obviously not on the Angels reports either....
-
Perhaps the los angeles angels of anaheim were thrown off by the awesome northeast weather.
The yankees look and feel like a classic yankees team . . .a 'total' baseball team that has finally solved the chemistry problem, and filled the holes, that has plagued them all decade. i don't see anyone stopping them. Their only issue is age, but that doesn't seem to be a problem right now. If the angels were red hot and some of the big yankees bats were cold, maybe they'd have a shot, but that's not the case at all.
-
I heard similar arguments last night. But for the three errors and the two that weren't called errors (the ball that landed between Aybar and Figgins for example was not called an error), that was a 1-1 or 2-1 ball game. On the road against their Cy Young starter and uncharacteristically granting them 5 extra outs/free bases, I hardly call a 4-1 victory impressive. CC was impressive that's for sure, but all in all Anaheim was in that game all night.
The Yanks are good, there's no doubt about that. But I think Burnett is beatable and is the one game Anaheim will win in NY. They've only got to win one in NY and won't face CC in NY again until game 7.
-
amazing game in the bronx last night. very impressed with how the angels went toe to toe and the yankees pulling it out was exactly why you have to at least respect them even though they're the yankees. hopefully the rest of the series continues like this. great hitters, great pitchers, great defense (moreso w/ the angels, but the yankees seem to compensate by playing super smart), great managers, great role players . . .with every at bat meaningful . . .awesome.
-
A day and ahalf is not enough time off for me...I need at least on full day of work to forget about what happened on Saturday night.
I'm stil reeling from that loss and have to leave work to watch today's game. This is not good for my fragile psyche.
-
Rollins!!! Rollins!!!! It's an odd feeling to get excited about that name when not refering to Henry. I had doubts J-Ro could pull it off last night because he seems to always take the first pitch and ground out to short. The Phillies celebration at third base was more enthuisastic than their WS celebration at the mound. If they get one more we can see if they can embarass CC like they did in the NLDS last year.
-
Very interested to see how CC pitches tonight. Baseball Tonight had a great stat that since 1995 playoff pitchers with three days' rest have a 20-34 record versus a 29-19 record in their preceding start on full rest. A watered down CC may be better than Chad Gaudin, but is he better than Scott Kazmir . . .or is he just an ox and not watered down at all?
It seems surprising that a manager with a Larussian-like obsession with match-ups like Giraldi wouldn't have CC pitch game 5 where he has a greater chance of dominating, knowing that Burnett and Petite are pitching at a high level going into a potential game 6 and 7.
-
Yes. Haven't stopped thinking about it all day. Sabathia had good numbers on 3 days rest last year getting the Brewers to the playoffs, but I remember his only playoff game on 3-days rest (6H, 5 ER, in 3 2/3 inn), and that was in the AAAA league. I think he really wants Sabathia for game 7.
I've also been staring at these numbers all day. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/p-pvb.cgi?n1=kazmisc01#choice=&bats=&minPA2=0&year_game=career&opp_id=NYY&orderby=PA&orderbyb=Name&minPA=0&orderbydir=DESC&orderbydirb=ASC&n1=kazmisc01&as=pitcher) Teix hits him well, and maybe Posada, but that's about it. If the Halo's can minimize the mistakes (which truthfully, even in yesterday's win, we weren't able to do), the Angels can win another close one.
-
Ugh. That was an ugly beat down. When it was 5-1 I was going to joke that the only person having a worse day than the Angels was Tim McClelland, but then it just kept getting worse for the Halo's.
Absolutely no answer for CC tonight.
