Snowing is coming down fast and heavy here. I'm catching up on Lost while not venturing out in this mess. ;D
-
Snowing is coming! ;)
Time to call my ride to make sure he's not bitching out on this Floristree show.
-
It's on! Snow ain't got shit on me.

Quick -- how much more should I tip the Chinese restaurant's delivery guy for coming out in the snow? On $20.

Don't know. Maybe an extra 5%. Depends on how far and how much crap s/he may have gone through. How long it took too but that might not be all that fair if it was extra long because it may be due to prep time and other extra crap they went through which could mean a bigger tip. It's only chump change we're talking about so over-tipping might be the safer and more fair alternative.

It's kinda messy out there. In my area, even on the main, they haven't plowed. Only sand on the road. Anyhow, lots of SUVs getting turnsy and a couple tires stuck. Had to help someone in a BMW (given)...the snow looks light and fluffy but it's very packable. Hoping they plow soon, driving would be doable in this snow, if they did. We're supposed to get hit again in the afternoon. hear the south has about 10-12". The cold isn't helping. Not looking forward to shoveling - again. Plus, I'm tired of waiting to decide about scheduling shows and buying tickets - we're not out of the woods of winter, yet.
-
The snow here is so light and fluffy and very easy to shovel now. I used a broom to dig my car out without any hassle. I hear next weekend another snow storm is coming :o

He'll probably end up giving him a fashion tip. ;D
Whether or not Wellington's are appropriate snow gear or should be reserved for the bogs.

Hey, Smackie. Fuck you. ;D :-*

I hear next weekend another snow storm is coming
it's a bit colder out there than the last snow, tho, yikes.
yeah, i read that in the almanac. hey were only off by a couple days with this storm & didn't predict how much, but said it would snow groundhog day, the 5/6th and 2-3 ft on the Atlantic coast in mid-Feb.
-
Smackie loves you all too.....
-
It was 11 degrees when I hit the slopes in Park City today. They have had like 50 inches in the past ten days. Expecting more tomorrow. Great day for Alta!
-
Right, wml - shoveling was easy. Now I can sleep in tomorrow. ;D
I was wishing I had skis - that snow is nice!

Killed my birthday dinner. ::)
Second time that someone wanted to take me there for my birthday only for it to get cancelled or postphoned because of snow. (The 1st one was never made up. This one though, will be a nice treat for later and best without the weather troubles.)

Thanks. That's okay though as I'm happy enough staying put for the evening.
-
shoot. I told myself yesterday to be sure to wish you a Happy Birthday, today.
Happy Birthday, Jag!
Sorry no dinner out. Order in and enjoy a cozy night.
-
I feel your pain Jag. Winter birthdays can suck sometimes. I'm still waiting on my make-up dinner, too!
oops - Happy Birthday! :)
-
Thanks.
Believe me, this is par for the course, even without snow. :-\
Happy birthday to you too! (Whenever it was/is.)
-
get ready for yet another thread maker this weekend. my superbowl plans just went up to shit . . . wait is that an expression?
-
yeah, wtf is with all this snow :o
-
yeah, but it also looks like there is a chance it might be rain
-
yeah, wtf is with all this snow :o
According to that lying & thieving fraudster, Al Scamster Gore, it's 'global warming'. ::) ::) ::)
-
early reports suggesting that this weekends storm could be a whopper.....potentially larger snowfall totals than the december storm
-
All I wanted to do was have a party last Friday night, but mother nature comes in and is all like "noo you can't do that" (even though the snowfall started later than it was scheduled).
So I rescheduled to this coming Friday... and now, again, mother nature is being a bitch.
Fucking hell.

i'm assuming this is flippant?
it's not all warming... it's more extremes. more droughts, and more cold.

hey, as long as my DTV dish is clear on sunday for the big game...

Tell me about it!!! My birthday dinner was rescheduled until this Saturday. ::) Now if only I could figure out how to get Mother Nature to delay that extra year of aging like she loves to do with some of our plans. Hey Mr. Natural, do you have any pull with her on this sort of stuff?

(sigh) For starters, do some research on Climategate. There's plenty more once you are done with that. I've done my research. Now go do yours. We have actually entered a period of global cooling. (And no, i'm not referring to winter.)
-
That's great. We actually scheduled to move the weekend of the last storm, and had to push it back to the day after Christmas, which was a bitch.
And now, we're pretty much in red alert waiting for my wife to go into labor...just in time for more snow.

ah we're going to global cooling now. better than last year's global warming isnt man-made spin i suppose
-
The earth... ALL of the planets go through natural cycles of cooling and warming, none of which is man-made. Just don't fall for all the corporate/tax scams that mobster Al and his clan try to impose on us. 'They' are the ones doing all the spinning. Or, I should say, lying; all for the purpose of raking in billions and trillions of dollars/pounds/etc., at everyone's expense with doing nothing to actually help the environment. Yes, do whatever you can to help and preserve Mother Nature but don't fall for their scams.

climategate? as in the stolen e-mails? if you think those disprove global warming, you've really fallen for the anti-hype.
global cooling is a myth. have a look here (http://ecolocalizer.com/2010/01/15/addressing-global-cooling/) for references to the contrary, including a repudiation by the supposed "father of global cooling", Dr. Mojib Latif, whose work has been mis-quoted by mainstream media. also some interesting links on interpreting what those stolen e-mails really mean.

jag, you pride yourself on your independent thinking. you aren't told what is the what, you figure things out on your own. maybe that is your issue with global warming - you didn't discover it, it's a huge problem with huge implications, so it must be a conspiracy?
anyhoo, back to the storm - when is it supposed to hit? friday, or saturday?
-
Oh, geez. There are tons and tons of scientists who have proven that the whole Al Gore and Copenhagen Summit is one big rip-off scam. Most of the scientists noted on Gore's documentary have stated that they totally disagree with his theory and had even written to him telling him that they did not agree and that they wanted their names removed. He totally ignored them and used their names anyway.
If global warming was man-made, than why is that the other planets have warmed to the same amounts as earth? It's very natural cycle.
I beg to differ on your thinking as I fully believe that it is YOU who has fallen for a crock of conspiracy shit. Well intentioned, but, none the less, a dangerous crock of shit.
I'm bored and don't feel like re-researching but there's plenty of proof out there.... and I don't mean emails that do prove nefarious intent.

define "tons and tons"
You know, there's a nifty little invention called 'Google'. If you don't believe something because it's on 'the internet', there are libraries full of books. There's also plenty of these scientists giving interviews and lectures worldwide. Go check some of them out.
With that said, check out both sides of the debate and take it from there.
I've done my homework and I'm not in the mood to do it for someone else. That's your job. You will only come away much more informed.
But do be aware that there are plenty of entities out there trying to profit off of your (not you personsonally, but in a genral public sense) fears of 'man-made global warming' and one's lack of knowledge of any real truths.
Again, preserve and protect the planet but know the difference between your good intentions and some corporate scam meant to rob you of your hard earned money while doing nothing to protect the planet.
While you are researching, make sure you take into consideration the science of the science (http://xtronics.com/reference/globalwarming.htm).
-
there are plenty of people looking to profit over denying global warming exists too. i just wondering which researchers you were focusing on, how much of a consensus you see in the scientific community. i dont think its asking too much for some insight if your going to be condescending about your certainty
-

You know, I use to fall for doing other people's research just because they asked or put me on the spot. Then one day I realized that I was doing that person a disservice. I did, however, post a good site that helped to make sure you were getting your info based on science instead of propaganda. Go read it.

Afterwards, you can jump over to this (http://www.desmogblog.com/500-scientists-with-documented-doubts-about-the-heartland-institute) but doing your own research is still the better way to go.
i have done plenty of research over the years. most of it points towards man made climate change being an accepted conclusion in the scientific community (like...the link you just posted). i dont think the science is perfect either (though holding it to an impossible burden of proof like the first link suggests is backing into a conclusion in my opinion). you just sounded so certain that i figured you had something earth shattering that i had not come across in my previous research. i guess you dont, so sorry

I don't know what you know or don't. I just know that the average person knows very little about the subject other than what the progaganda machines, who have a corporate agenda, want them to know; or rather, 'think'.
-
I don't believe in global cooling and I do lean toward a belief in man-made effects on the climate, but to claim that global warming is gospel truth is just daft. It's not just "Warmergate." The IPCC - the leading "authority" on global warming, who took home the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, and upon whose "scientific" research the whole Copenhagen conference was built, has recently had to admit that elements of its massive 2007 report (the laurel upon which they were largely awarded the Nobel) were fabricated and they knew that they were fabricated (see; glaciers, Himalayan) but included them anyway because they wanted to sway opinion. They have also acknowledged that they didn't always use peer reviews in verifying their data and their conclusions and that they failed to investigate the hundreds of objections they received from within their own community and they continue to resist an independent audit of the data upon which they base their conclusions (see; Financial Times 2010-02-02) Most damning, by their own admission, they only use "science" that conforms to a "consensus" that they define ex-ante. Anything that does not conform to said consensus is not considered. So much for the scientific method.

Hire the right midwife and doula and there won't be a mess. For us, the doula cleaned everything up as it went along.
But anyway, best of luck to you guys. Didn't you originally say the baby was due Feb 14? First babies are usually late anyway.

You better brush up on your delivery skills though just in case. Seriously!
It's a good thing that I like you or I'd throw something mean your way. ;)
I just feel sorry for the kid having to put up with a lifetime of dead of winter birthdays. Ugh! Then again, if they turn out to be a Super Toilet Bowl fan, than it could work out nicely. That is not me. I avoid anything Super Toilet Bowl related like the plague!

Actually, it was my wife, whose fear of hospitals and drugged births and unneccessary cutting prompted her to go the midwife route. Not I. It wasn't until the day of birth that it was decided that the baby would be born at home.

You guys know there's a curse on the Kennedy family, right?

Tiffany & Co doesn't make linens, first of all.
Second, there are certain things in life, that are so simply obvious that sane people do not waste time arguing. I don't try to argue with people who believe the white race is superior to all others. I don't debate with folks who think Jews are evil and control all the world's banks. I don't dicker over the facts with people who think man/dog sexual relations are acceptable. And likewise, I don't attempt to have a serious discussion with climate change deniers. You're clearly an ignorant person; no one who isn't actively trying to reject obvious truth can argue climate change isn't occuring from man-made reasons. You're an idiot shoegaze fan on a nightclub's message board, shut the hell up.
THat said, I'll grant you certain details of the Gore doctorine are up for debate. Namely, this world needs to wrap its head around the ugly truth that one of, if not the biggest cause, of man made climate change is obesity worldwide, but no one wants to hear it.

Arguments lose credibility when there's obvious misspelling/ word comprehension used.

Julian - pick your designer. Not important.
Julian, please don't try to play mind games by inferring that I believe any of that other crap you loaded up that other paragraph with. You know what they say about the word 'assume'. You've alreaady made an 'ass' of yourself. Don't falsely try to make one of me or anyone else here.
Julian, you care nothing of this debate other than that you see it as a chance to attack yet another board member to make your miserable little life appear that much better. Even though that only works within your own warped mind.
So do us all a favor and go take a nice long hike in all that cold snow.

compared to the thousands who believe it is happening, the few dozen on that wiki page do in fact constitute "a handful". they are massively in the minority.
so when is that snow supposed to start?
-
Hey, Jags, got any Holocaust denial or 9/11 Conspiracy theories you want to share while you're at it?
-
Sweets, there is no way that I will defend any sort of energy company but that does not mean that I will in the least support Al fraudster Gore's Crap and Tax plans that are designed to place mega billions upon billions directly into his greedy little hands. BIG conflict of interest there! You really should look into how that is meant to work. It's not about helping the planet. It's about siffoning off our money for their non-environmental purposes.
I'm bored....
Now let's get to something really important:
Julian says Tiffany does not make napkins. After doing 'my' research, it appears that he may be right though I did find these. Frauds? I did find a lot of napkins using name games piggybacking on the Tiffany theme like Tiffany blue (a commercial color construct) napkins and Tiffany's (possesive) napkins. The official Tiffany site had none though I don't know if they ever did at one time which could mean there are a few retro Tiffany napkins on the market.
Tiffany napkins (http://www.tableoverlays.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=108)

F U
Go do something really important and check out those bogus Tiffany napkins.
-
Those are not blue napkins by Tiffany & Co. They are Tiffany blue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_Blue) napkins. Or, to be even more specific, they are napkins that are very close in color to Tiffany blue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_Blue) since only Tiffany & Co is allowed to use that color in the US, I believe.

Exactly what I suspected.... as noted in my previous post.
Thank you.

I think of all the things in this thread -- the snow, the climate change argument, the more snow, the holocaust denial, etc -- the thing that upsets me most is that I said Tiffany & Co doesn't make linens, and Jags felt the need to even question me on it. THAT'S COLD.
-
Jags felt the need to even question me on it. THAT'S COLD.
give it until 2050, it'll be 6 degrees C warmer by then ;D

Screw the Superbowl. Hopefully, this doesn't impede my ability to catch the Theo Angell and The Residents' shows this weekend.

Yes, it's cold... but that's the weather. In fact, I'm f*cking freezing at the moment!
It wasn't that I doubted you, dear Julian, it was just that I figured that I should follow my own advice and do a little 'research'. Found some God-awful, tacky napkins along the way. Consider it a lesson in one of those 'what not to use on my table' things.
Btw, have been meaning to ask you: What's the best and safest way of cleaning off a tad bit of tarnish on the gold trimming of crystal goblets and other stemware?

Pardon my ignorance if I'm just missing it, but the only thing I can see that he/she posted in this thread was:
oh, stop. It just makes me think about how I ended up in the east coast in the first place ... Roll Eyes
well hope you get more rain there SOON. How's that?
...and I don't see how that applies?
-
Btw, have been meaning to ask you: What's the best and safest way of cleaning off a tad bit of tarnish on the gold trimming of crystal goblets and other stemware?
This is a butler's concern, or a housekeeper's concern, NOT a Julian concern.
-
Also, if one cannot afford Tiffany, or is just too cheap to spring for the real deal, than absolutely DO NOT try to imitate. It only screams T.R.A.S.H.!
If one must, use your own creative instincts which is always much nicer. Even better if you can afford to set a lavish table but not always a prerequisite. Not only is it fun and creative but much, much more personalized.

Uh, then... would you please ask your butler for me.
Okay. Thanks. ;)

1) it is indisputable that the earth warms and cools, historical data provides the proof.
2) what causes the earth to warm and cool, seemingly at random, is not known.
3) until 1998, it is assumed that the earth reached a peak in temperature. i say assume because numerous outlets have begun to raise questions about the locations and possible cherry-picking of locations (urban because temperatures tend to be higher in urban areas than rural areas), and lower (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/feb/01/leaked-emails-climate-jones-chinese) altitude locations, for the same reasons). see also this piece (http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/12/08/the-smoking-gun-at-darwin-zero/) about how CRU "normalized" a temperature increase at Darwin, Australia despite actual temperature data showing no such increase in temperature.
4) arctic ice levels have been increasing since 2007 (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1242011/DAVID-ROSE-The-mini-ice-age-starts-here.html), likely due to the arctic decadal oscillation reversing (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071113200545.htm) itself. of note is that NASA explaining that this reversal has nothing to do with "global warming" and basically just reverses itself.
this is important- IPCC models are based on a number of assumed variables (as GGW noted, though, the assumptions all are based on man-made increases in CO2 being the main driver) that are, in fact, very highly variable and not necessarily dependent on man. A recent report (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2010/01/28/national/w112626S48.DTL) cited a decrease in water vapor as a reason for the flattening of temperatures over this decade; yet, most assumptions rely on CO2 driving an increase in water vapor.....however, CO2 levels have been increasing. what could cause water vapor levels to drop then?
all of this is to say that. . . . . .climate models should not be used as facts and should not be used to push policy. the past 10 years should be evidence of that. with each passing day, it seems, new information is learned that continues to tear down, bit by bit, the IPCC report (aside from the simply false information about the himalayan glaciers, more questions are being raised about the sources of the conclusions) and the underlying foundation about CO2.
as i stated at the outset, there is historical support for climate change- the earth routinely warms and cools, sometimes on its own, sometimes as the result of other influences. we simply do not and cannot account for the staggering number of variables and stuff we don't know about the atmosphere to really be able to make 1 determination as to why temperatures go up and why they go down.

I'm bored and don't feel like re-researching but there's plenty of proof out there.... and I don't mean emails that do prove nefarious intent.

thanks for proving my point by linking to a website that lists a handful of scientists.

Storm Heading for Washington; Super Bowl Looks Sunny (Update2) (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aPsMwHzj.L5o&pos=9)
By Brian K. Sullivan
Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- A storm leaving a trail of snow from New Mexico to Texas is forecast to cover Washington with a foot- thick blanket this weekend, while rain will give way to warm and dry weather in time for the Super Bowl in Miami.
There is a chance the storm may leave as much as 20 inches (51 centimeters) of snow in the Washington-Baltimore area, rivaling one Dec. 19 that dropped 15 inches on Reagan National Airport, according to a National Weather Service statement.
?Plan for substantial disruptions to travel Friday afternoon through the weekend,? the agency said in a winter storm watch released today. A winter storm watch is issued when there is a potential for heavy snow.

@Haggis - ^ And note that you've neglected to name even 1. ::) Seems you've been outnumbered. Also, if you would have read that piece, you would have noticed that it did not claim to be an exhausted list. Of course, you didn't even bother to read it. It doesn't fit your false pre-conceptions.
Yet another know very little know it all who probably knows nothing whatsoever about the purpose of why this scam is being perpetrated. Go throw all your money at Al Fraudster. That's your right, which I have no desire to exploit, unlike those whom you apparently worship. You should do some research into where that money is going. It's not about preserving the environment. It's about pretending so in order to suck you dry of everything you and your children own. That's the whole crux of the matter.
Time for YOU to do some research. Seems that only a few of us around here (on both sides of the debate) have even bothered. Some of you would just rather pick a side and attack with not knowing what the Hell you are really fighting about. Just jump and attack because of some assinine band wagoness corporate controlled mainstream media fear mongering based on everything from false assumptions to flat out lies.
I'm tired of being suckered into proving 'my' point. DO YOUR OWN GODDAMN HOMEWORK!!!!!! Maybe you'll learn something.
-

Thank you Arthways. But, you know how it is. They don't 'want' to know. You know, it's just not 'cool'. ::)
-
I'm tired of being suckered into proving 'my' point. DO YOUR OWN GODDAMN HOMEWORK!!!!!!
when you can't prove something, it's pretty easy to say that you won't on some vague principle.
-

when you can't prove something, it's pretty easy to say that you won't on some vague principle.
Huh? It looks to me that you are the only one on your team that isn't using that tactic. Don't even try to throw that ploy my way because it's flat out wrong! Maybe you should go read some of my posted links. ::) While you're at it, go read the posts and links that GGW, Bede and Arthways posted. If you did, they must not have sunk in. Would bet that you are one of the very few who even bothered to skim through any of them.
Also, keep in mind that my point is that certain entities are using false sciences to fear monger others into believing that what are most probably 'natural' environmental changes; NOT 'man-made'; for the sole purpose of robbing us via taxes and other bogus surcharges, so that they can become even much more filthy rich than they already are. Oh, and don't forget to research a little company called 'Generation Investment Management'. Go see who is part owner. Then ask yourself how many billions of dollars, pounds, and other currencies they stand to gain if they can manipulate the masses into falling for their little scam.
Here, this will get you started (http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=54528).
-
Here's another one for you (http://www.businessinsider.com/al-gores-2009-7) with this little nugget:
"But there is far more to him. Gore is getting rich from environmentalism, not just by being paid a whopping $175,000 per speech but by using political pressure to force government policy in a direction that benefits his business interests."
*Bold marks are mine.
-
The head of the UN's IPCC also makes a mint when his policy recommendations are heeded:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/6847227/Questions-over-business-deals-of-UN-climate-change-guru-Dr-Rajendra-Pachauri.html
Like I said, I am not going as far as to say global warming is a hoax, but if you don't believe that its proponents are motivated as much by $elf-interest as by golden-hearted altruism then you may be more than a little naive.
-
Oh, yeah. That Pachauri guy is another real evil scammer!!!
GGW, I would be honored to shake hands with you on this.
Personally, I believe that the climate moves back and forth, much like breathing, due mostly by natural causes. Same as it does on Mars, Jupiter and the rest of the universe. That also does not excuse environmental polluters. Bet you that those on the other side of the debate 'assumed' that I thought it did. If so, you would be dead wrong!!! True environemental controls and protections are not the 'real' purpose of the crap and tax/carbon tax scams. Either way, as Arthways noted about ALL of us, I'm not a scientist; but, I have done some of 'my' homework. Smaller differences of thinking are fine as long as they aren't used to foster corruption, as this is being used.

i would think that atlanta is already here, or arriving ahead of the storm. my guess is that they'd still have the game and offer people that cant make it something in return
now sunday might be an issue if the pens cant make it in. they're coming from have a game in montreal on saturday afternoon so they have to fly. guess it depends on when the snow comes
the schedule is kind of crunched already so i would think the nhl would not want to reschedule if they can avoid it

Yet another idiot who 'assumes' the wrong things about me!!! Goes to show how little you know.
I have never been, nor ever will be, in anyway, shape or form, a Sarah Palin supporter. In fact, I think she's the poster child for total daftness.
Bet you anything that you 'assume' that I'm a Republican too. Wrong!!! Fucking wrong!!! In my eyes, hardcore Republicans are as repugnant as hardcore Democrats. Neither think for themselves. Instead, like you and some others here, they only react to what they are told to react to, regardless of how it truly affects them. Apparently you don't get that because you need to be told what and how to think.
With that said, there are a few Democrats and Republicans I do have some respect for. The kind who have some sort of real respect for the American people, along with other peoples of the world. Hardcore party followers are not like that. It's all for the Party and the Party for all. Blind obedience, as we see happening here.
Btw, haven't seen you come up with anything of substance to suport your team's arguement. ::) Nothing but vicious attacks, all for the sport of it, and I'm sick of it!!!! Majority? WRONG!
majority = correct (one (http://stats.org/stories/2008/global_warming_survey_apr23_08.html), two (http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/01/19/eco.globalwarmingsurvey/index.html), three (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change), four (http://www.logicalscience.com/consensus/consensus.htm), etc).
thanks, jag, you've put an end to this exchange we've been having. i won't be posting on it anymore... because you hold positions that make discussion pointless. yes, the MAJORITY of scientists believe that human activity is negatively impacting global climate as summarized by the concept of global warming. anyone stating otherwise is spreading good ol' fashion FUD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty_and_doubt). there is no widespread disagreement within the scientific community on global warming. you're certainly free to disagree with global warming, rock on, but don't try saying the scientific community is behind you. it isn't.
you know why there is a "list of scientists who do not believe in global warming" page? because it's such an uncommon position. why isn't there a page of "scientists who DO believe in global warming"? because there are too many of them. it's not a note-worthy position to hold. sorta like how there isn't a "scientists who believe the earth is round" page.
i'm done on this topic. everyone enjoy the snow!

Julian, it's best that you don't give a shit. They'll just expect you to pay for it. No shit, either! Shit, farts; you name it! Every and any excuse to charge and tax you. You can laugh, as it is ridiculous, but that is one of their intentions, all to make Gore, Patchauri and their pals that much richer, at our expense with no real concern for the environment.
Uh, wow... talk about I hadn't said anything in the thread in a good long while. Are you seeing a whole team of psychiatrists? Unless your responses and anger issues in this entire thread is a character you're putting on, you need to be.
Anyway, back to important matters... roads are already messed up here, but we're only supposed to get 6" and a glazing of sleet/ice on top. I miss Michigan, wanted a blizzard.

Julian, I was totally joking around with you. Not at all trying to take the piss on you. Sadly, the content itself appears humorous, it's really no laughing matter. This really is important if you don't want massive needless tax increases that will do nothing to help what it claims to help. It was not at all an attack on you.

wow jag, i was just kidding around on the last page. thought that if the sarah palin crack wasnt obvious, then the jupiter part surely was. no need to get all glenn beck on me
Maybe it's the weakness of the internet/written word but it didn't come off that way at all. Sorry that it went down that path as I have no issues at all towards you. As I mentioned to Julian, it is an important matter regardless which side of the science you take. In fact, it's much, much more about a schister than science. That's the 'real' issue. Plus, I'm sick to death of so many others assuming so many wrong things about me.
Btw, I totally detest Glenn Beck as I fully believe that he is two faced and meant to co-opt those who see the problems with our government, into the Republican Party. And I mentioned before how I feel towards them. You can throw Rush in there too though, personally, I suspect (not sure though) that Glenn has become more influential; hence, more dangerous. Appeals to those who see the ills and then leads them astray, right into the enemy camp.

Very, very light flaking just starting north of Baltimore. It's always the ones that start that way that end up being the heavy hitters. I'm not looking forward to this.

Sweetcell, yet again you side-step and twist the matter around by avoiding what I kept directly pointing to about your buddy, Al 'The Frauster' Gore. You know, 'ol Uncle Al, that guy whose alter you worship at the foot of. (In fact, they've said that they want to make it the 'new religion'.) Yes, Al Gore, the same guy 'who invented the internet'. ::) ::) ::) ::) That alone should have tipped you off to what a fraud he is but I guess that is just an inconvenient truth for you since it so clearly points out as to what a fraud he is.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the point was that a very corrupt and very good salesmen is using junk science to further he and his buddies' business aims at a major expense for the people of the world, all while doing nothing to actually help the planet. You have yet to address the real issue, probably because he can't be defended without looking like a totally naive fool. Please get that right as I've gone out of my way to make that point. Apparently, that point hasn't sunk in yet so I guess you need a few more hints.
Here are just a few:
Just for starters (http://www.slate.com/discuss/forums/thread/3489451.aspx)
Another helping just for you (http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/politics/2320--carbon-scam-al-gore-profits-and-copenhagen)

Guess none of this could be true because, well, there is just so much damning evidence regarding his conflict of interests, collusion and bogus claims. Or, more importantly, it just does not fit in with your most inconvenient truths regarding your god, Al Gore.
Again Sweets, stick with the point: Al 'The Fraud' Gore. The guy who is out to sway public opinion and govermental policies, solely FOR OBSCENE PROFITS!!!

Well, if they're not committing felonious crimes like throwing snowballs at moving vehicles, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

just got power back, been off since 6:30am... we lost three two story evergreens, which got uprooted due to weight of the snow. This one is leaning against the house

Walkie likes good beer. MM likes shit beer. So no, it's Walkie.

Matthew McConaughey wants to name his unborn son after his favourite beer. The 'Fool's Gold' star - who is expecting his first baby with girlfriend Camila Alves - is planning to pay tribute to his beloved alcoholic beverage, just like his brother.A source close to the actor said: "Matthew's older brother Michael named his second son Miller Lyte because he loved the beer so much. And Matthew loved the name so much he really wants to name his son after his favourite beer. He is thinking of going for Bud after Budweiser beer."

So sorry for you on so many different levels. Besides the obvious of being without power, it can be upsetting losing the trees. Especially older ones like that. Hope the leaner doesn't cause any harm for your house. Also hope that's the end of the tree damage.

Don't exactly know what the final exact total is in my neighborhood other than it's, at least, pushing 30''.

What's a bit of a bummer is our court, lost a bunch of tree when they replaced the sewer lines and these were some of the last remaining tall ones. Hopefully some of our small evergreens are just bent over and will be able to recover.

^ Kosmo, as you know, it's going to cut down on all that good shade during the hot summer months. That sucks. Hope your newer trees take root and make for a nice new generation of trees.
In the meantime, this is great (http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-15749625/snowball-fight-in-washington-dc-18009602). Bet several of you were there. (Please share your stories.) Love how this turns a major pain in the ass into a great community gathering.

thankfully it seems like none of the snowballers this time around were dumb enough to do it in the middle of a major intersection and attack innocent passers-by...
here are my pictures from the heart of downtown yesterday. It was beautiful and amazingly quiet with almost no cars:

cars are back on the road, there is slush everywhere, and sidewalks are a struggle -- the beauty of such an event is short-lived.

afraid not doom. i went to the snowball fight at dupont but arrived after the huge crowd shown in the video. it was still a ton of people in the circle but the majority had moved to the intersection near starbucks. after a while everyone was at the intersection doing the north/south battle but the majority of them would stop that to throw snowballs at passing cars which included a few police cars and a few bicyclists.
one truck stopped and the passenger chased after someone, i guess someone that had thrown a snowball. dont know if he ever caught the person.
there were a few trucks that encouraged people to throw snowballs at them. one truck came by with a guy holding on to the back like he was water skying.
i felt bad for the people passing by in their cars. what was weird was they would stop at the red light while people kept throwing snowballs, i would've run the light. out of all the cars that went by only a few ran the light.
the police finally blocked off most of the circle entrances around 6 or so. people were still out throwing snowballs at each other when i left.
did anyone make it down to smithsonian?

fucking hell. IT'S A SNOWBALL, NOT A GRENADE. they go "pouf" on the outside of your car. there is no reason to feel sorry for anyone inside the car, there is no reason to chase after someone who hit your car, and there is no reason to pull a gun. IT'S A FUCKING SNOWBALL.
am i missing something here?

you are actually missing two things:
1) snowballs don't always go "pouf." They can be packed almost as hard as rocks, and in fact many snowballers take pride in their ability to make a hard packed snowball
2) it's beyond juvenile to attack people who aren't involved and don't want to be involved, no matter how harmless *you* think it is. Anyone who thinks there is nothing wrong with that deserves an iceball to the face from a stranger.
Cali's account confirms to me once again that the people doing this stuff are just a big bunch of adult children.

Are you serious? I did hear about 6 inches w/ ice/sleet.
Is it nkotb who is having a baby soon? I saw a couple interviewed about their son's new baby born on Friday. Wondered if it could be him.
I haven't seen a plow since Friday - turns out the one for our area caught on fire. It looks like a bomb went off over here. Neighbors' tensions are running high after arguments of where to put all the snow.
-
Yep, I am having one soon, but that wasn't me. Heaving 16 tons of snow off of our cars, the sidewalks, the driveway and our still-unplowed road ensure that this kid wasn't showing up this weekend. Would've been a good story, though!

Wow. Didn't expect that reaction to a snowball fight. If anyone was throwing them at cars on purpose, sure, they suck. But otherwise? Just a bunch of people having fun.

I feel the exact same way. Snow was fun when I was in high school and got out of class for a few days because of it. Once you're in college and have a job and less time to enjoy it, it's more of a pain in the ass than a luxury.

I don't know.. walking around in snow at 1 am Saturday felt pretty awesome as did yesterday afternoon in the sun.. Talk about a winter wonderland..
-
basically, snow is fun for maximum one day after -- no work, you can walk in the middle of the street, everyone's in a good mood. After that it's a cold, nasty slushy slog and even if work is closed you know shit is piling up on your desk. So the key is to enjoy that one day as much as possible (unless you're without power, in which case it's harder to do even that).

The only thing worse for this board than all of us getting older is a light dusting of snow across the DC area....

however, dulles airport recorded 32 inches. gotta admit that's a tad more than a "dusting". on the upside, all that snow will keep the youngin off our lawns.

Light!?!?!?!? :o ::) :o ::)
(I know your are just ragging on us.)
You and Mr. Natural (since he loves it so much) are more than welcome to come finish shoveling out my car. I need to get to the store and, due to health reasons, have not been able to finish getting mine dug out. Have been trying to do so on the installment plan. Walked along the side of my car and the snow almost came up to my hips! (And I'm not short.)
-
I'm with hutch. I feel like I was beaten up yesterday from the amount of shoveling, but man, I do love a snow day. God bless working from home. I might even be more productive here...and it's so much fun walking the dog in the drifts.

With the Washington-Baltimore area still digging out from a weekend storm that left record snowfalls in some areas, the latest blast of winter is going to be accompanied by heavy winds, which will make it feel worse. 6 to 12 inches of snow may fall along a corridor from Washington to Boston, and some areas may receive as much as 18 inches. The snow will be followed by cold air that will drop temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal and be accompanied by heavy winds.

^ Which is why I don't want too much of the snow on my roof to melt or blow away. Enough to keep the roof from collapsing but I've noticed that it's helping to insulate my apartment a little. At least better than the crappy insulation (or lack of) that's supposed to do so.

The new data we're analyzing portrays a rather ominous picture for the region, beginning tomorrow afternoon. Two areas of low pressure, one from the north and one from the south, will likely merge off the mid-Atlantic coast developing into a very powerful storm Tuesday night and Wednesday. Though this storm will not have the same amount of moisture as Snowmageddon, models suggest a deeper storm (i.e. more intense meteorologically) which will pose a significant risk of high winds and additional power outages.
The probability of potentially dangerous conditions is highest north and east of the beltway and especially as you head towards Baltimore and Philadelphia. However, even our southern suburbs may experience periods of heavy snow and wind.
FREQUENT QUESTIONS
When will the snow start? Between mid-day and mid-afternoon tomorrow.
When it will end? Probably around late afternoon Wednesday -- later north and east.
How much?: Our best bet is 5-10" in the metro region, but 8-14" as you head north and east towards Baltimore. South and southwest of the Fairfax County, 3-6" is most likely.
Could it be more or less? Yes. Double digit totals (10" or more) remain a possibility throughout the metro region (25% chance). By the same token, if the coastal storm forms too far north, lighter amounts from 1-5" or so might do it.
How bad will the winds be? By very late Tuesday night and into Wednesday, sustained winds may reach 25-35 mph, with higher gusts. Assuming there is falling snow, this could create blizzard conditions.

the whole roof collapsing thing is a bit worrisome. My place was built in 1900. I've got to assume the roof is pretty tough but who knows. I'd say the odds of killing myself are much higher if I go up there and shovel so I'm gonna leave it and hope for the best.

Oh I totally agree its really awesome, but only when there aren't any obligations.
Snow is fun on a snow day. Snow is a hassle when you have to go to either work or school. I was taking deliveries at work on Saturday morning here in Richmond. That was fun.

For me it's not the work piling up it's not being able to enjoy the time off w/ this amount of snow to shovel and prepping w/ stocking supplies beforehand. When we were kids our parents did it for us. ;) And those who now have kids are also looking to go back to work too, probably. :)

With idiotic drivers out in the D.C. snow, observers are driven to distraction
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/09/AR2010020903522.html
seriously folks, driving in snow is an acquired skill. takes experience, the right equipment (i.e. not a rear-wheel drive with bald tires)... and humility to admit that some things just can't be done until the snow is gone. i've been in my car once this week, and won't be going back out there until streets are a LOT clearer. the amount of idiocy i saw on the road was scary.

I don't think I've ever seen the Washington Post use the word "idiotic" so many times (or at all, actually). But that article makes a good point.

work cancelled. i have no idea what to do today

a very interesting interview about the recent extreme snow events and a potential link with climate change...
"I think the "climategate" affair and the recent attacks on the IPCC and the head of the IPCC have been very effective in making the general public mistrust climate scientists and the science they do. What I like to call the "Manufactured Doubt Industry" is extremely powerful, experienced, media savvy and well funded, and a bunch of disorganized scientists bent mainly on pursuing the truth really can't compete".
interesting stuff

I was pleased to see him reference Chris Mooney because while I was reading that, it sounded like it was right out of his book (which it was). Chris's first book "The Republican War on Science" was excellent and I had forgotten about "Unscientific America" after I read the first chapter in a bookstore last fall. Good reminder to pick it up and finish it.

More trouble looms for the IPCC. The body may need to revise statements made in its Fourth Assessment Report on hurricanes and global warming. A statistical analysis of the raw data shows that the claims that global hurricane activity has increased cannot be supported. (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/15/hatton_on_hurricanes/)

snowing here in Cville. Roads are already pretty slick out there. ;D

i love how how a dusting of snow turns this region into a declared disaster zone. stock up on canned good and bottled water... while you still can. whatever you do, don't drive faster than 12 mph.

I love how a dusting of snow brings out the hackneyed comments about how people in DC can't handle a dusting of snow.
-
about two inches of snow out there now and a thousand car accidents . Everyone and there speedy four wheel drives ;D
-
First off, the roads are horrendous. I don't understand how there's maybe 2 inches of snow on the ground and people are sliding everywhere. We're leaving work early though, my manager has a Suburban and she was all over the road.
Snow!
-
i drove to work at 1:30 and the roads were pretty dangerous. not sure if its the particular kind of snow we got or just bad road crews
-
Suspect that once the percipitation fell, it froze, creating a layer of ice under the snow. That's why it's so slippery.
Walked up to the beach and fell flat on my back in front of some complex that must have done some sort of cleaning that ultimately did just that. Was hard getting back up because it was so slippery. Ended up walking in the street because it was much safer. Not like there was any traffic either. Made sure that I avoided that particular sidewalk on my way back.
Cool seeing a beach full of snow all the way up to the ocean... and having it all to myself. :)
