Is there anyone that has seen Beach House before that can attest to how they are live?
I love the new record, but it seems like something that has the potnetial to fall flat live, especially in the middle of what will likely be a very packed Black Cat.
Thanks.

pretty boring when i've seen them. but the new record is much better than their others so it could be less boring just due to having better songs. gonna be a sold out and overly chatty crowd, i'd guess.

serious question: has anyone ever seen a non-chatty show at the BC? i'm sure i have, but i can't remember for the life of me. BC crowds just can't seem to shut up.

I was also bored the couple times I saw them and this new record has failed to keep my attention the few times I tried to listen to it. Their first album is the only one I really enjoy and even that one live failed to do anything for me. But when I saw them, it was just Victoria and Alex on keys/programmed beats. I think they have more of a band now? I'll still probably go; kinda want to check out The Bachelorette. Liked that album she put out last year.

Quite a few on the backstage. On the mainstage, only a couple come to mind. Grizzly Bear in early '07 and The Tallest Man on Earth last june.

don't forget that 2007 jens lekman show. historically quiet at that one.
-
I was in the back for that show and it was less than quiet during the more upbeat songs. But yeah, people were well behaved during the quieter acoustic stuff.
-
the last time i saw them, this past summer in baltimore (outdoor show) they were fantastic.
-
I don't know if Beach House is any good live, but Shearwater is.
I'm hoping most of y'all choose the Beach House show.

I didn't realize these were the same night. I think Shearwater wins that one for me.
-
and if it makes the decision any easier, the show is now sold out.
-
Well that sucks.
-
tickets are still available for their baltimore show.

i've been following beach house for the last 3 years, and while they're not exactly the greatest band live, i have gone out of my way several times to see them. in part it had to do with their sound and the venues always being on the verge of being empty the few times i've seen them. part of that appeal might be gone now that they're selling out crowds but i'm loving the new album and the new inclusion of a drummer might add a little umph to their live sound like it did for their record.

i think we should only consider shows that actually sold out the floor.

If that is the case, I'm drawing a blank.

i think broken social scene back in 04(?) was pretty silent.

Perhaps James Ford could confirm?

That will never get old in my eyes. I laugh aloud every time...

Agreed!
He probably bought El Jefe's poster while he was there!

So this thread seemed the most relevant: I bought "Devotion" and like it a lot. However, I get the impression from the songs that the other Beach House albums may sound really similar and just more of the same. Are any of the other Beach House albums worth getting?

Get "Teen Dream" it doesn't sound that similar to "Devotion" it is actually a masterpiece.
I have seen them before and after "Teen Dream" was released and hyped by all the magazines and blogs. I prefered the smaller crowds of before the hype hit them. THen everyone was really into the music and knew the words. Now you have a bunch of people at the shows looking at their watches and looking bored.

I wonder how they will fare at Merriweather before Vampire Weekend.

They're opening for VW? But...Vampire Weekend sucks.

Sounds like every DC show. The elevated sections at DAR were seated for the National. I would never want to play this city as a musician.
-
^^ do the National really wanna make you get up from your seat and bounce?
-
This is not a phenomenon exclusive to the National. You can turn around and look at the crowd at almost any DC concert and they look no different when the band is playing as they did before the show started. I think I remember one of the guys in Dinosaur Jr calling out the 9:30 Club crowd for how dull they were. As a musician, why would you want to come back to DC to play to a bunch of zombies?
-
because people pay money to see bands here
-
David Yow's callouts were my favorite.
Thank you, good people of Bethesda.
-
Exactly...their music doesn't really inspire me to get up and groove...mostly, though, it's because I'm fast asleep.

Well to be fair to DC I have only seen Beach House in their home town.
