Title: James - 9/27
Post by: Frank Gallagher on September 17, 2010, 03:14:35 pm
One of the most underrated bands to ever grace a stage.....
Anyone who doesn't go to the show is a complete tosser and missing out on probably the best show this year!
I'm looking forward to Ft. Lauderdale this Monday.
Their new album (The Morning After) is now available in the states.....BUY IT!

Hey Mankie!

Kosmette and I are super psyched about this show, even sprung for the VIP tickets.   Last time through town I went in a causal fan and left a convert.  One of the best shows I've seen of late.  Kinda bummed they aren't doing two nights, because they strike as the type of band which are worth seeing multiple times...

Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale - James as sharp and professional as ever and seem to be really enoying their second lease on life. Probably the best James gig I've seen. Culture Room about 1/4 the size of 930 so quite the 'intimate evening with James' as Tim Booth announced at the start of the show.

Set list was a nice mix of very old / brand new songs, so it's not a "buy our new album tour"

If I had the luxury of time and funds I would drive up to Orlando to see them again tonight..then fly up for the 930 show next week, but reality tells me otherwise unfortunately.

I turned a friend onto them last year and when my wife was unable to come along I begged, coerced, threatened her to drive from Clearwater (4+ hours) to come with me. She reluctantly agreed but thanked me at the end of the show for 'making' her come along. She's a die-hard DMB fan but admitted james are a better live band, which is saying something evidently, having never seen DMB live.

What are these VIP tickets that you speak of? My buddy is coming down from Boston and we're going to be at the show. One of my first post-Spawn shows so I'm looking forward to getting back to the club (doing a three nighter - Eels, James, and Stars).

The VIP tics were available on a band presale deal... Basically early entry, plus a chance to attend part of their soundcheck

*Plus you will be up front to sing the chorus for one song during the concert. They don't have a choir with them so are using people from the crowd. Stands to reason it will be lucky sods at the soundcheck!  (Don't want to spoil the fun but learn the line, "here's to a long life" )

RIGHT YOU LOT! If you haven't already buy your ticket for James tonight or I will come to your house and pee in your rosebushes!

Seriously, even if you've never heard of this band you will be a convert after seeing them live....just ask Kosmo and the like.

(Do you think I have a career as a concert promoter?)

Short attention span review.

Great show with  a setlist geared towards the diehard fan, with deep cuts reaching back to the beginning of their career.  Several high points including Tim and a guitarist doing the beginning of "Sit Down" while walking through the crowd from the back of the club.  Gonna have to say that the last show was a tad better if only because "Hey Ma" was a really powerful performance.

The pre show mini-concert was just a real treat, four songs and a chance to hear the band doing a bit of chit chat with the fans.

Definitely better last time, but this one had a few great moments. Looks like DC got a longer setlist than Boston (I read they had technical difficulties throughout the show and they only did 17 songs).

Kosmo, what did they play at sound check?

Far be it from me to complain about the show last night, but I do wish they had played a few more newer songs off of Hey Ma and the new double album. Last night's show didn't have the energy the show in 2008 had, mostly because they stuck to their more jammy material, but hey, I'll take a 2hours+ show from James anytime.

Here is my interview with Tim Booth on DCist in case anyone missed it:

Thanks Kosmo for the setlist!
Really good show last night. It had it's moments but their 2008 show set the bar too high. The mood was not exactly the same. I actually thought the crowd took a little while to get into it. But hey! I couldn't go home more satisfied. I left the club with a smile on my face.

They didn't play Hey Ma in Lauderdale either...I wonder if they're skipping that one because if it's anti-war/political views? That would've been the only song I was bummed they didn't play. They didn't do 'sit down' either in lauderdale but I've heard them sing that live so many times it wasn't missed.

Is it just me who is in awe of Saul and his instrumental skills?

The four song listed as the mini concert were done at the soundcheck.

Destiny calling was quite the treat.  The last two songs were to get the choir rehearsed.

While some of us were waiting to gain early entry, Tim was going into his bus and said "the band is crap"

Show was taped here because of their fond memories of the last show here.

And at the end of the show the band looked exhausted

overall it was a great concert, though I agree that 2008's was a little bit better, perhaps was it more energetic last time?, i don't know, but last night was pretty amazing nonetheless, does anybody know what are they planning to do with the recording?

Not the chain one.  A former manager of the 4P's (and friend of Smackie's, hence Kosmo's ribbing of me) opened his own bar and restaurant across the street from the 9:30 - it's called Duffy's...

That was simply a fantastic show. I'm not a huge fan of the band, but I've seen their last three DC shows because they never disappoint live. Last night was no exception. The band was tight, Tim Booth was engaging, and the crowd was really into it. Everything firing on all cylinders, especially by the end. And all my favorite bartenders were in the house. Good times.

If I was a member of the band, I would refuse to EVER play Laid again for that reason alone....and if 'she' does then 'he' has an problem!

Ed Harcourt gave a shout-out to DC saying how much better the crowd was than NY. Considering most the crowd talked through his entire set, I could see why.

Webster Hall might be the last place I ever want to see a show. Ive seen some messed up things - but last night James was told they had to end their set at 11pm. Needless to say, our encores disappeared like that - with them only coming out for one song. The crowd never left and kept on cheering, but to no avail, they never returned. I guess this is their new policy. And sadly, my friends and I all wanted to hear 'Born of Frustration' which wasnt even on the setlist.

The set opening in the balcony with 'Sit Down' all stripped down was quite awesome. Tim was very energetic and danced up a storm. He had a ton of women go on the stage for 'Laid' which nearly caused a fight. They did sound really great and the band was having a great time on stage. I wished I had seen them in high school, but this will have to do. And wasnt familiar with their new songs in the least, but most of what I heard was really great. He gave an intro to most the songs and said what they were about.

From friends in DC, it sounds like your show was infinitely better.

I have to say this was one of the worst crowds I had ever seen. Ive never encountered such rude people at a concert. I got slammed into the barricade by this huge chick because her friend was next to me, and she felt that she should just have her own spot next to him. Then she couldnt get on the stage during 'Laid' and nearly crushed a few of us. Audiences can really make or break a show. She then proceeded to tell a bunch of us to 'fuck off' as if it were the worst insult we had ever heard. I did meet one of the SYTYCD choreographers who was really cool.

You're so right about a crowd making or breaking a show. Unfortunately, it usually seems like, if anything, they break it for me. Sorry that was true for you.

It's LaPatin, and I always thought she was a little crazy.  I also thoguht she was with Tony Meredith too, so it shows you what I know about them personally.

She does ballroom, which isn't my favorite, but they're good.

And you should totally go to the party...

I want to go to the party, but Im seeing Belle & Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub in Williamsburg. If time permits Ill go over. I think theyre trying to get more people to join their studio. And from talking to her, she is definitely very single :) She seemed a little crazy but was super nice and very friendly. And of course she was on the stage during 'Laid' and could easily outdance everyone :)

I realized she did ballroom when I talked to my cousin who worked for her. Shes prob now teaching ballroom in SF or something in her freetime.

Wonderful review.  As a fan who did not get to see them in 1994 at the HFStival, this show was better than I ever thought it could be.  Plus, after seeing Pavement on Saturday (another band I missed at that show), it was the best icing on the cake :)
