Why did it suck so much? I was curious to know how this was since I like his SNL work.
-

I had a great time. The crowd was kind of hostile.
He started the set playing some songs - a few have appeared on SNL (Brendan Canty and Mary Timony were in his band)
Then he did some impressions, some q and a, showed clips of Portlandia, a drum set, and it was all kind of unstructured.
I don't know if people were expecting stand-up or what, but there were some people in the crowd who clearly have never been to the Black Cat and acted like real douches.
It's the kind of thing that would have gone over well at a venue like the Largo in LA, but I'm not sure it was suited for the DC crowd.

You mean it was a show suited for douches?

Yeah, the whole thing had a loose, "not sure what to do but I want to entertain you!" vibe. He clearly doesn't tour or have an "act", but was very game to do whatever impressions the audience wanted and have fun with it. I really enjoyed it. There are plenty of professional "stand-up" performances.

i saw him open for les savy fav around 5 years ago and he was awful

Sounds like it would have been a great Baltimore show.

Canty played drums for a couple songs. Fred played a drum solo and did drummer impersonations.
All in all, I thought it was an great show and everyone around me seemed to love it too.
It should be noted that Fred recently broke up with his Scientologist girlfriend and Scientologists are imfamous for their smear campaigns against those they see as "enemies".
I've already seen blogs where people have started leaving comments about how Fred is a womaniser who mistreats his girlfriends and that this Black Cat show was awful.
I wouldn't be surprized if those blogs were all written by scientologists.
There is a good reason the members of Anon hide their identities when they protest scientology. it is one scary outfit

RustyOrgan is a scientologist?
would explain a few things...
-
It was his wife (Elisabeth Moss of Mad Men), not his girlfriend.

I sit corrected!

Moss is a Scientologist? Oh my...

WLDC got some of those werid "womanizer" comments on our review of this show. Interesting to learn about the Scientology angle. I'll pass that along.
For the record, the writer of the WLDC post is not a Scientologist or an ex of Fred Armisen, she just thought it was shitty show.
