Didn't see that coming..

I'll take anything to get Lou Reed recording again...

Forget U2. Lou Reed/VU=most overrated of all time.

I think your opinion is overrated.

I agree with Chaz.
So, I'm a huge Lou Reed fan. He's definitely in my all time top 5 or so favorite artists. I'm not really sure how to feel about this. On one hand, Reed hasn't done a really rock album since 2000's Ecstasy so I'm excited for an album, but Metallica, really? I don't think there's a single person on earth that saw this one coming.

3rd!
I'm much more a Velvet Underground fan than a Lou Reed fan but the man definitely has his moments and deserves some respect... even though his personality from many accounts puts him in a category where I'd prefer to admire his work from afar and avoid all personal contact with he himself.
-
when i think velvet, i can't help to imagine what it would have been like to be at one of those warhol freak out shows.
i like lou reed, i hate lou reed. i like metallica, i hate metallica. it'll work.

Metallica Machine Music
-
I like VU but I can't stand Nico.
-
They played together at that Rock and Roll hall of fame conert at MSG in 09. It was ok. Who doesn't like Lou Reed??
-
LR/VU I'd go to any time anywhere. Metallica, almost as over rated as U2. The sad part about Metallica is that the vocalist really can sing but he chooses to do that horrid raspy throat groaning crap that does not fit his voice at all. Sounds like he is constipated and trying to push out a rock hard turd with all his might. Especially on that song with the 'until he sleeps' line or whatever it is.
-
My wife, for one.
Thank goodness I married a fox instead of a sheep.
Who doesn't like Lou Reed??
-
Ratbastard when you say "overrated" does that simply mean a band that millions of people love but you don't?
-
Perhaps he is one of those millions of people who don't understand the meaning of the word "overrated".
Sometimes there will be a band who doesn't live up to the high regard that music geeks hold them up to. That to me is what overrated means.
While U2 and Metallica are beloved by millions, they're not held in particularly high regard by music geeks. Hence, they really can't be overrated.

I'd second this. Most people I know that LOVE U2 only think they're music geeks. But I guess I can see RB's point...no way U2 should have as many fans as they have. Metallica, too, especially with their post Black Album output. Still, I'd turn the volume all the way up on Master of Puppets any day of the week...

Well lucky for you she only sang lead on a whopping total of 3 Velvet Underground songs.
VU was completely epic in my mind. Nobody before or since sounded anything like them. Each of their proper albums is completely unique from the others, while still maintaining a consistent signature. They are one of the few bands that absolutely BLEW my mind the first time I heard them. I was 14 or 15, had never heard their name, had no preconceived notions that I was "supposed" to like them. In fact, I was half drunk and falling asleep. My friend was like "dude you gotta hear this band". He was playing Black Angel's Death Song. I was floored. I've listened to them consistently ever since. A long time.
Lou's solo output has been varied. But it contains some of my all time faves. And he had a 3 record run in the late 80's/early 90's that for me puts the exclamation point on his entire career.
-
I would disagree and say that they should have as many fans as they do.
They started off as a band playing more indie (not that the word existed in the early 80s) sounding music, establishing some cred early on. Then expanded to big rock anthems, thus capturing the classic rock crowd. Then went pop, bringing the top 40 type music fan into their fold.
Why wouldn't/shouldn't they have as many fans as they do?
And of course Metallica is always going to have tons of fans as long as their are pimply faced males in the world.

I guess I don't get this line of thinking. To me, U2 isn't some hyped buzzband that no one has ever heard, they've had legitimately mega-popular albums that spawned tons of hit singles over several decades and they continue to sell out 50k-100k stadiums. To me that says they're as popular as they should be.
And while I've been one and may still be to an extent, who gives a shit about music geeks? Music geeks inherently shun most music that is mainstream so it's hard to put a lot of credibility into their opinion about which music is valid and which isn't. So when I read something along the lines of "People that like U2 don't really like music" I think it's pretty douchey. I'll scoff and smirk when I look at my wife's collection of Dave Matthews, Counting Crows and (sigh...) Ani Distanko CDs but does that make her any less of a fan than me, with my Tyler, Psychedelic Horseshit and Blanck Mass mp3s?
I'm guilty of it to an extent. I remember seeing the Killers as the 3rd band on a Black Cat bill and thinking, wow that was great! But a year later when Mr Brightside was blaring from every bro's jeep, I was like "pbbb, these guys suck now."
-
That's what I was kind of trying to get at, but not very well. I'd almost rather hang out with a U2 fan and talk music than I would a music geek in most cases. My taste run pretty wide when it comes to bands, but I still wouldn't want to listen to some numbnuts name drop bands all day long to look impressive. My comment about "U2 only think they're music geeks" was more of a compliment, meaning they're not needlessly trying to like things to be hip. If anything, it was more of a compliment, although I guess it didn't seem that way.
Also, based on your wife's musical preferences, we might be married to the same person. I'm honored to follow you up, good sir.

And let's face it. The average woman who has Dave Matthews in her collection is probably way hotter than all three of the women who listen to Psychedelic Horseshit.
-
Agreed. Or at least I would if I knew any women that listened to them. Or any women.

Well lucky for you she only sang lead on a whopping total of 3 Velvet Underground songs.
And all three of them would have been classics but she ruined them. And for that she got her name on the album?
-
I don't know, I kinda think that Nico's weirdly icy voice is pretty appropriate for the songs she's on. It wouldn't make sense to have her intoning on Heroin or Waiting for the Man but I really love her voice on Tomorrow's Parties and Femme Fatale.
-
It's kind of like Donna on the 70s Dead shows. She's such a contrast to the vibe of the band and yet I can't imagine Music Never Stopped, Playing in the Band or Samson without her caterwauling over them.

SHE'LL TURN ONCE MORE TO SUNDAY'S CLOWN

Women go to see Dave Matthews gigs for the music.....men go to Dave Matthews gigs to see women who go to see Dave Matthews gigs.

i like how nico says "clown" as "klon" - i picture lou and the rest of the band suppressing laughter when she's singing it and she's like "vott are you loffing ottt?" and they giggle and "nothing, nico!" and then lou quickly rewrites some lyrics to make sure "clown" is in another song she sings.

Kinda like that Peter Sarsgaard pirate skit on SNL. Saaaarsgaaaard.

Ratbastard when you say "overrated" does that simply mean a band that millions of people love but you don't?
No I mean the level of their talent is far far below what the hype is that pumps them up. Mere numbers means very little. What is 'popular' in this country (to the masses) is whatever the big dollars push down the collective throats of American society. Not one person in U2 is more than an above average musician. Their songs are OK, but not much other than over hyped political anthems that allow Bone-Ho to say "look how great I am". They make your average run of the mill good music, but nothing that even comes close to the level of great. Metallica, well what can you say. They are a perfect example of corporate dollars pushing a band to the level they are. I don't even know where to start with them, but their music really isn't all that good.

DMB yet another band that is WAY over rated. In fact they are more so than the others we are talking. How the hell they got as big as they are I will never figure out. Just a typical hippie bar band. Not to mention his voice makes dogs' ears bleed for miles around every time he opens his mouth!
-
How many instruments do you play and how well do you play them?
Do you play guitar better than the Edge?

Leadbelly is so overrated.
The Smiths are so overrated.
Smelly Sonic Monkey Semen is so overrated.
Every band or musician in the history of music is so overrated.

and here I was just thinking it was an interesting collaboration...

When Metallica and Lou Reed played together it sounded much like Rock and Roll Animal. So it makes more sense than one may think.
-
Yeah I totally saw this coming.

What I can or cannot play is 100% irrelevant. Surely you understand that. I may or may not play better than 'edge' (lol how lame is that name alone), but I know for a fact that there are a vast number of guitarists who do play immensely better than he does.
-
Being able to play guitar fast or appearing on the cover Guitar Player magazine doesn't make one more talented... The Edge developed a specific style and sound which many prefer over say the sound and style of Sevendust.
-
Overheard at the Baltimore 10-Miler this morning:
Woman #1: "100.3 is our classic rock station."
Woman #2: "Classic rock?"
Woman #1: "Yeah. You know - like Bon Jovi and U2."

I'm sure some prefer his style more than that of Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Vai, and an endless list of others who are vastly more talented than he is. Crap even that poser EVH is better than edge.

You sound like a 14 year old, trying to pass of completely subjective statements as fact. :D

no . . . that is fact. eddie van halen is better than the edge. sorry if you disagree. way fucking better.

calling bands you don't like "over-rated" on a music-snob board populated by navel-gazers... is over-rated.

Back to the topic at hand...more details on this totally predictable collaboration between two completely overrated artists.

There's only one band that comes to mind when the word 'overrated' is uttered.
NIRVANA
Other than that, if you don't like a band somene else likes, that doesn't make them 'overrated'

when you use "overrated" to describe a band you don't get or like, it's justified.
when others use "overrated" to describe a band they don't get or like, it's wrong.
got it.

Sweetcell, you're making the common mistake of trying to apply any sort of logic, intelligence or rationality to one of Frank Gallagher's comments. It's almost cute how you do.
