Title: I demand a DC commuter tax
Post by: Thousand Made-Up Loves on July 31, 2011, 09:56:05 pm
I'm reading Dream City and I'm tired of all the suburban parasites sucking out all the federal tax money our fair District so rightly deserves. You treat our infrastructure worse than a whore, at least a whore is compensated for her services.

Fuck you, suburbanites, and fuck you, Congress.

there should be a special, punitive tax on Teabaggers.   They are unwelcome in the District.

Ha ha......if it weren't for surbanites heading in to town to spend their hard earned cash for dinner and bars etc. DC would be on a par with Port Au Prince, only without the culture and safe streets.

All suburbanites pack their lunchsacks with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a baggy full of grapes, a chocolate cluster bar and a juice, so your argument falls flat.

my brother is a "suburbanite."  he has a great job in dc.  he eats out every day for lunch.  when i go into dc, i eat at expensive restaurants and spend way too much money.  you lose, relaxer.

Not all but most... most suburbanites commuting are not eating out for lunch during the workweek.. maybe on Friday but..

People forget today's DC is very different from Marion Barry DC.. many many upscale/upper middle class whites have moved in.. they're the ones supporting the DC economy.

^^ RIGHT, it's an outdated book. Someone is stuck in the 90s. Is this your recommended reading for English 100?

I must say, during the 20 years I lived up there I never saw anyone with a lunchsack eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, baggy full of grapes, a chocolate cluster bar and a juice in a restaurant on any given evening....but you must know better, you bad-ass townie  you!   ::)

Sorry, pal. Dream City is essential reading for any true Washingtonian. Obviously I know DC is not what it used to be, for mostly good.

I totally support a commuter tax. Because, as a resident of Arlington, I look forward to the massive influx of tax revenue that it will bring to our county as the private sector moves their offices across the river.

People in the suburbs love to think DC would be a bunch of crackheads in a shantytown without them but the reality is that increasing parts of DC are wealthier than the suburbs.

You've got to be kidding me. WHere? the abomination that is Rosslyn.. I think we have enough...Things are fine the way they are.. the last thing we need is more "development" in Arlington. Its bad enough what has happened with the American Cheesecake Factorization of Clarendon

Holy shit . . .you're talking about a book written in 1994?  Has any city changed more since 94 than dc?

Doesn't mean the commuter tax issue is irrelevant.

I'm all for bringing more revenue to DC, but this would be a mess because the surrounding county's would respond with their own commuter tax.

how about a tax for all the fuckheads from dc and northern virginia who come out to the shenandoah valley every weekend . . . and stink up the place with their attitudes?

That's fine with me. Neither Arlington nor Mont Co are swelling by 400,000+ commuters per day.

anyway, this is the dumbest topic in history.   Pretty much every boardie on this thread has a well defined position.   It's not even necessary to type, if each person just leaves a blank post with their name, we'll basically have the same debate.

What percentage of their pay would you consider a fair tax on commuters.  In my county 50% of tax dollars go to schools.  Well commuters shouldn't have to pay school taxes.  Another big chunk goes to libraries.  Once again commuters shoudln't pay for that.

Most of the money for highway repair comes from federal tax dollars.  Not that DC has many highways.  I am sure most of the subway and buses are payed by federal tax dollars and fairs.  So DC doesn't need help there. Prisons?  Well I am guessing most of the crime is home grown not committed by and large by commuters.   Police force?  Well they have red light cameras and speed cameras. I am sure that most crimes by commuters are traffic related.  The 10 percent tax DC has on restaurant bills in the district should be able to pay for the police needs caused by commuters.

So what do you think a 1 percent tax on their income? I wouldn't be opposed to that if the following occurred:

The federal government stopped giving DC all that cash to run their government.
If DC hadn't given away a brand new baseball stadium to billionaire baseball owners for millionaire baseball players to play in.
And if they could build some highways into DC from maryland.
And they stopped giving me parking tickets when I wasn't parking illegally.

Absolutely not. I agree with you on the parking tickets.

highways slicing through capitol hill were planned in the 60s, thank god they weren't built.

Fair?
Listen, when DC residents get some/any representation at the national level in the Congress then we can talk about fair, no?

Taxation without representation is bullshit.

Blah de blah de blah blah fucking blah....if you want representation live in a US state.

I just love how a basic, fundamental right like representation in Congress is just so casually dismissed by those who have it. I bet if you were alive in the 40s, you would have been the same asshole who supported preventing District residents from voting in presidential elections. Because if they wanted to vote for president, they should have just moved to a state.

Fuck you.

I do.

Doesn't mean I have to be ignorant. You see Gallagher I don't compromise my principles because I am not affected on a personal level.

Actually, from 1985 until 1992 I was subject to "taxation without representation". Although here legally I was not a US citizen so not allowed to vote yet still paid taxes. I lived the state of MD at the time.

so FUCK YOU ARSEHOLE!!!

DC obviously is an abbreviation for DUMB C**T in your case.

Now quit your bleeting and get a fucking life because the only thing people care less about than football is the pissing and moaning of the entitlement minded DC residents.

It's also a dumb topic because, by some inexplicable coincidence, everyone's positions on this issue correlate directly to where they happen to live.
