Well some of you know that I have been out of work over 3½ years and had a lot of medical issues throughout my life. Well I get mail from the casinos in Atlantic City giving me $250 in free play, a free room, and a voucher for a free cruise for two if I show up this past Friday (yesterday). My buddy Jeff tells me he will drive and cover gas/tolls so I basically get a much needed mini-vacation for free. I saved up a whole whopping $100 so I could play a little extra and off we go...
Around 5:00 Thursday afternoon I sit down at the Let It Ride table with my $100 and decide to go for it. I bet a total of $86. I end up hitting 3-4-5 hearts as my pocket cards, and cool I win $400. I am happy. The dealer turn over his two card and shows the 2 hearts and then the 6 hearts. I start freaking as now i have 2-3-4-5-6 hearts. It took about 5-10 minutes for me to find out that I had just won a grand total of $12,900. They had to shut down the game for about 45 minuets to verify everything but sure enough, they slide me 25 $500 chips and 4 $100 chips. I gave the $100 chips to the dealer and the three other people at he table (including Jeff). The $12,000 went into the safe in the room and came home with me, and I just enjoy the casino with the $500. You might say I was just a little excited and very happy...

Well actually I am doing pretty damn god at the casino. Last December i had a similar thing happen. They sent me $35 worth of coupons right before I was headed to the HOB in the Showboat for a concert. On the way out the door I put the voucher and a $5 bill in the $10 slot machine, first pull I hit 5x - 10x - bar. Won $10,000. Went right to the car and headed home when they paid me that in cash. Lightning twice and all maybe.

Thanks everyone. To answer the tax thing let me try to give the best answer I can. This is all for federal purposes. States may vary. All income form games, lotteries, raffles, gambling, etc is considered earned income and must be reported on your 1040. You can offset wins with losses of the same type (gambling losses can be claimed up to the amount of your winnings). In most instances, any time you "earn" $600 or more in a tax year (calendar year for most of us) the person/group paying the earnings has to report it to the IRS in addition to you having to claim it. At a casino the rule is a little different. They have to report any win that has a pay out of 300:1 or higher. My $12,900 win was actually a main bet of $50 that paid 200:1, and two side bet that paid $10 @ 40:1 and $1 @ 2500:1. They only win that the casino has to report (and they gave me a 1099/W2/G for ) is the $2500. Sooooo, it is on my honesty as a law abiding citizen to report the other $10,400 when i do my taxes.
The casino did NOT reduce my winnings at all in either case. The first time (at the slot machine) I got 100 $100 bills. Thursday they slid me 500 purple chips ($500 each) and 4 black chips ($100 each). I gave the four black chips to the dealer and the other three people who were playing at the same table with me at the time.

i knew someone who used to go to ac occaisionally. anytime he won big he would get a check, put it in a envolope, address it to himself and put it in a mailbox.

I'm assuming he did that so he wouldn't get jacked in the parking lot? Sorry if it is a dumb question but I am not a gambler.

i think it was more likely to ensure that he kept part of his winnings. casinos are full of stories of people who win a big jackpot and proceed to give it all back to the house by gambling with the winnings. people often feel like it's "free money" so they don't worry about squandering it while they're on a gambler's high. mailing that check ensures that you don't wake up the next morning as un-rich as you were when it all started.
-
no . . . it's so they don't get all jacked up and shit. never trust anybody in those places. kids, old ladies, hot chicks you wanna impress. never, trust, anybody. the end.

I like the Borgata. Only go there when there is a show I want to see there. I am in the black there. I also go to Tahoe every winter. I am way in the red at the Bilty and the Nugget.
-
yes, mailing the winnings means not gambling it away.

How come no one ever talks about how they blew 40k gambling over the weekend?
I am going to Atlantic City next month for a two night bachelor party. I have made it my whole life without going to AC. Everyone has said its a dump.
Any suggestions on cool things to do? I don't gamble as I dont' like to throw my money away. I spent a week in Las Vegas and gambled a whole 10 dollars.

Atomicfront,
Gambling and whores are the only reason to go to AC.
