I don't know what the general opinion is here about BYT, but I think this is worth mentioning: Brightest Young Things posted a ticket giveaway for the Morrissey show that's a "write a suicide note and the best one wins" contest. Which is a little screwed up-- yeah, I get that it's Morrissey and he's mopey, and they're trying to be edgy and funny, but it's neither edgy nor funny to write pretend suicide notes. I ranted about this a little bit on my daily Music Notes blog post (http://showlistdc.com/more/2012/06/19/showlistdc-music-notes-tuesday-06-19-12/) today (that link also has a link to the contest).
Anyway, just passing it along, with my thoughts.
-
Fuck BYT.
-
Worst contest idea ever.
Morrissey is very funny too.
-
stupid, stupid idea.
my entry: "life used to be so great, then i started reading BYT... i realized that i was hanging out at the same shows as those douchbags... i was being mistaken for a BYT'er, at which point life wasn't worth living anymore."
-
Clearly none of these people has ever had a loved one commit suicide.
-
Horrible. How can they actually justify having this?
-
I left a comment, but I doubt it'll get approved since it was insulting their "clever" contest idea.
-
The jackass who runs that site needs to write a real suicide note.
-
I covered all of this in today's Music Notes (http://showlistdc.com/more/2012/06/20/showlistdc-music-notes-wednesday-06-20-12/), but the Washington CityPaper wrote an article on all of this (which you can read here (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2012/06/19/that-joke-isnt-funny-anymore-byt-asks-morrissey-fans-to-write-suicide-notes/)), and BYT has now changed the text of their contest. I did a lot of copy/pasting on my own blog today, so feel free to click that if you don't want to send more hits BYT's way. (they posted a response on their own site which said, basically, "Vice did it first.")
-
Vice are kind of assholes, too.
So yeah, I'd say that that's an apt comparison.
Tons of evidence can be cited but the first (because it's the most recent) thing that comes to mind is that Grass Widow review.
Though the ratio of worthwhile content on/in Vice to that on BYT is still like 37/1.
-
Remember the time that woman killed herself by jumping in front of the Metro train and someone on here started a Metro train jumper playlist?
-
There is no record of such a thread.
And a subway jumper playlist isn't even close to the same thing.
Creating a thread in which songs about suicide are listed and posting a contest in which people are encouraged to write a fake suicide note cannot be compared.
-
IMP really needs to stop encouraging the douchebaggery of BYT and cut off their endless supply of free tickets and access. Why would IMP want to associate with such entitled twits? Fuck those guys. Total fucking assholes in every fucking way.
-
^Yes, all of that.
Hoping this garbage has repercussions and that BYT stop getting shit handed out to them by venues and bars who have been conned into thinking they are getting a return on all the free stuff they give BYT.
-
also, p.s., I totally agree with showlistdc's latest assessment of BYT. How on Earth can they have so many people with "Editor" in their titles when it is clear that no one edits any of what they call "content" over there???

That would be so tits. I don't usually care for hating on any blog or group of people, but I just really REALLY have never liked BYT, they're all fucking stuck up pricks. I have a friend who works for them and she doesn't like them at all. Unfortunately I guess it's good to have on your resume... or something... I dunno.

Their website is visually offensive.
-
Honestly, I can't really say much at all about them since I never, ever visit their blog. Won't even click links that I can tell go to their site. Their name turned me off so badly that I refused to bother with them. If they can't get them in their cyber door, than they certainly can't get them coming back.

^ this. it's like they made a web-site on geocities back in 2000 and decided it was good to go for the next two decades.
-
I have no idea how I started getting emails from BYT, but I won't be getting them anymore becacuse I have blocked them. I just read the city paper article and instead of apologizing, the byt staff is trying to rationlize their behavior. I can see the next contests "Make a funny story about being molested as a child" or "make fun of someone who died of cancer".
-
Well, here's the latest summary. After I initially posted about this in my ShowlistDC Music Notes on Tuesday (here (http://showlistdc.com/more/2012/06/19/showlistdc-music-notes-tuesday-06-19-12/)):
1) On Tuesday, the Washington CityPaper ran the article that I linked above (here (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2012/06/19/that-joke-isnt-funny-anymore-byt-asks-morrissey-fans-to-write-suicide-notes/)) with quotes from BYT's Managing Editor Logan Donaldson.
2) Then BYT Assistant Editor Stephanie Breijo ranted on the contest page (the contest link is down now, but I've captured her text here (http://showlistdc.com/more/2012/06/20/showlistdc-music-notes-wednesday-06-20-12/). You can also see this in Google's cache of the page).
3) BYT also quietly changed the content of their contest to say "string together a couple of paragraphs using only Morrissey?s lyrics". DCist picked up on this and wrote an article here (http://dcist.com/2012/06/byt_realizes_morrissey_lyrics_are_b.php), with an additional quote from Donaldson.
4) At some point yesterday, BYT took the entire contest down. The Washington CityPaper reported on that, too, here (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2012/06/20/byt-replaces-suicide-note-ticket-giveaway-with-a-login-screen/), with an additional quote from Donaldson.
I've got this all summarized on today's ShowlistDC Music Notes post, here (http://showlistdc.com/more/2012/06/21/showlistdc-music-notes-thursday-06-21-12/).

Funny, because that is basically what it started as, and still is. Douchebags who take photos of themselves supposedly having stupid good times, trying to make themselves look cool so that you will think they're cool and pay them money to hang out with them http://brightestyoungthings.blogspot.com/
-
File this under, who gives a shit.
Terrible artist and terrible website.

We're being watched. (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2012/06/21/i-m-p-productions-asked-byt-to-change-its-morrissey-contest-language/) ;D

IMP making excuses for BYT? "Other than this we've not had any issues"? Riiiiiiight.
Just keep supporting their douchebaggery and giving them free shit...
Here's an idea: Why not cut off their supply and let them die a long overdue death? They wouldn't have lasted this long if you didn't give them the access and perks that you do. This shouldn't be their warning...this should be their third strike. They're the parasite feeding on you IMP. Shut it down.
-
How about you channel that energy and anger toward a real problem?
::)

I am curious how they got my email address. Does the 930 club give them their mailing list?

Merely so I can stay as far as fucking possible from them
-
And the truth is I generally ignore them unless (1) they're sponsoring something, so I can steer clear, or (2) someone else starts talking about them

if you hate the thing so much stop rubberneckin'
I have enough with the vinyl district.

aha, ok, that makes a lot more sense. (of course, now I could shamelessly mention that I round up everybody's DC-area music coverage and ticket giveaways on my daily blog, here (http://www.showlistdc.com/more/)....so keeping up with TVD becomes fairly easy!)
