Title: Bandcamp
Post by: killsaly on November 27, 2012, 11:39:27 am
Bandcamp is beta testing fan accounts.

I have been a fan of the service for a while, and now on top of streaming and purchasing music, you can also peruse each others purchases/collections.

http://bandcamp.com/rougeriderhood (http://bandcamp.com/rougeriderhood)

Did anyone else get in on the Beta?

No.  Wish i had.

I didn't either but am also a fan. The high payout for artists per purchase is great and is something I have taken advantage of and plan to continue doing so. I prefer Bandcamp over the likes of Spotify because I'd rather pay for flac files than a streaming service.

Hoping it takes off and a Bandcamp page for new albums becomes the norm in the next year.

I am not sure why the fan site is not showing any free or pay what you will downloads.  I have downloaded at least 50 free EPs and LPs off of Bandcamp on top of the 47 they have listed.

It's too bad you can only list direct purchases in one's collection. Guess I need to add those to the wishlist I've gotten a couple compilations and albums for free and had downloads for other albums fulfilled via bandcamp, none of which will show up if I add email addresses associated with those downloads.  Oh well

Title: Re: Bandcamp
Post by: killsaly on January 12, 2013, 01:34:02 pm
I think its kind of dumb that they arent showing the free ones.  If I search my email for 'bandcamp' and 'download', it would be at least 100 more releases on there.  Maybe they will patch it.

Also, it seems that since I used the same email address for both my artist and fan accounts, I cant follow anyone's account, since when I log in with my email, it defaults to the other account.  I would not imagine that they would want people to have to use two email addresses to fully use their system.

Post by: kosmo vinyl on January 12, 2013, 01:53:07 pm
That's weird because I can add additional email accounts as a fan, to find other purchases. I was hoping to pick up some of those other free/paid for downloads, but couldn't.  Oh well I guess it's still in beta.

I already used it to add a track azaghal1981 mentioned on twitter...

Bandcamp is donating 100% of its proceeds tomorrow to the ACLU.  And I've seen at least two labels doing the same, Merge and Record Kicks.  So dust off that wish list...

Anyone get from Bandcamp yesterday?  I ended getting several things from my wish list,  but also got the new Priests, the case/lang/veirs album which I've already listened and totally enjoyed.   Not that i really needed it but didn't realize WAV was a download option from there.  FLAC works nicely for me...  I was nice to find out that their cut is only like 15% of the cost.

I got some downloads of Live Records from Superchunk, Hold Steady, and 3 nights of DBT in Athens, GA, and then vinyl preorders of the new Bad Moves, and Phoebe Bridgers, and DBT "Stay 6 Feet Back Motherfucker" T Shirt.

Bandcamp steps up, spotify pull a stunt...

So this coming Juneteenth (June 19, from midnight to midnight PDT) and every Juneteenth hereafter, for any purchase you make on Bandcamp, we will be donating 100% of our share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, a national organization that has a long history of effectively enacting racial justice and change through litigation, advocacy, and public education. We’re also allocating an additional $30,000 per year to partner with organizations that fight for racial justice and create opportunities for people of color.

All-Star Adam Schlesinger Tribute Album 'Saving For a Custom Van' Benefits COVID-19 Relief
6/16/2020 by Gil Kaufman

Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Nada Surf and Ted Leo contributed to the 31-track album.

It's fitting that late Fountains of Wayne singer Adam Schlesinger's friends and musical colleagues are remembering the prolific, wildly talented songwriter with a tribute album benefitting COVID-19 relief. The 31-track Saving for a Custom Van, out today on Father/Daughter Records & Wax Nine and available exclusively on Bandcamp, features Schlesinger's collaborators, tour mates, friends and fans offering up their versions of songs from throughout the Fountains of Wayne singer/songwriter's expansive career.

Schlesinger, who died on April 1 at age 52 due to complications from COVID-19, is honored by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator/executive producer and star Rachel Bloom, who reworks FoW's most beloved song, "Stacy's Mom" into a jazzy cabaret track. The album also features comedian Sarah Silverman teaming with Ben Lee for a folky take on "Way Back Into Love" from the 2007 movie Music and Lyrics.

Other contributors include FoW guitarist Jody Porter covering "Four in the Morning" from Schlesinger's other band, Ivy, while Letters to Cleo's Kay Hanley takes on the power pop nugget "Radiation Vibe," Motion City Soundtrack do "Dip in the Ocean" and Nada Surf take a "Sick Day." All proceeds from the album will go to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund, which is helping music industry community members affected by the coronavirus pandemic

Solid lineup for this to be released in Dec

Whole Lotta Roadies

On the line-up for this one-off recorded extravaganza are Belle and Sebastian, Twin Atlantic, The Proclaimers, KT Tunstall, Fatherson, Emma Pollock, Honeyblood, The Rezillos, The Xcerts, and Idlewild.

This has become a thing..bands trying to do something for their road crews

That’s a side of the business nobody talks much about

Often the road crew start as a band’s original fans, friends and family and bands get very close with their crew... over the years and multiple tours everyone bonds... road crew kids might grow up playing with band member kids...often their crew are also musicians..sometimes when bands lose members someone from the road crew is promoted to replace the original band member... sometimes road crew members do side projects with a band member... sometimes someone starts out as road crew and then leaves to make their own band and music

It’s an interesting dynamic

this is bonkers

On the first Friday of every month since March, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic. Over the course of these nine days, fans paid artists and labels $40 million dollars, helping cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and much more. If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who participated, thank you.

and they have more Friday's schedule for next year...

it's also remarkable how much is funneled back into artists and labels via bandcamp

If you’ve started to feel guilty about buying music on any day other than Bandcamp Friday, here’s something to keep in mind: on Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money reaches the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day of the month (as 2.5 million of you have since March, buying an additional $145 million worth of music and merch) an average of 82% reaches the artist/label. Every day is a good day to directly support artists on Bandcamp!

The early consensus is as long as Epic allows Bandcamp to continue as is, all is fine.

One positive is that Epic may bring in the needed muscle to take on Apple which is preventing Bandcamp from directly selling within the app.

Personally, I hope it all stays the same as it serves now as cloud storage for my purchases.. the thought of downloading all those zip files makes my head hurt… zip files are my nemesis

Hopefully all artists I support stay put

Actor Rhys Ifans in Notting Hill, Harry Potter and lately Spiderman was the lead singer prior to Gruff joining the band

anyways they have released a track recorded nearly 30 years ago

it's apparently only going to available for a limited time

This is so messed up and WTF did Epic Games think they were getting when they bought Bandcamp.  Pretty sure Epic Games bet heavily on the whole NFT bullshit and are now cost cutting left and right.

Epic is laying off roughly 50% of the Bandcamp staff amidst it sale to Songtradr.  So much for respecting the Bandcamp Employees union.

Seriously why isn’t Bandcamp a not for profit company at this point, surely there are smart people that could take this on.

Hmmm not sure if it’s Epic or Songtradr laying off employees.. I hope any artists using Songtradr to do digital distribution, etc for them cancel that service because of this BS

Oh great Soundtadr doesn’t actually make money licensing music, they are kept afloat by borrowing money like all good tech companies… the future of Bandcamp doesn’t look so bright, now that have gutted their editorial department

Oh and apparently they got rid of the team that took care of handling reports and then removing neo nazi bands.  So of course that shit will proliferate now.

“Bandcamp earned a reputation for good moderation. Reports were acted on quickly and effectively, by people who knew their way around the symbols and dogwhistles of white supremacist music subgenres. Whatever comes next will probably not match that, with real consequences for funding of these scenes.”

As will people running scams by uploading albums that aren’t theirs

Another Benefit Compilation has been released

LOS ANGELES RISING

 https://losangelesrising.bandcamp.com/album/los-angeles-rising

hutch and loveandrocketshatch might want to sit down as there is a collaboration that might do their heads in :)

A compilation of music benefitting the SWEET RELIEF Musicians Fund and their work supporting artists and music professionals who have lost their homes and instruments in the Los Angeles fires.

Musician Kevin Haskins (Love and Rockets, Bauhaus), Record producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, IDLES) came together after witnessing the destruction of the homes and livelihoods of not only fellow artists but also of their support structure of crew, publicists, marketing teams and of their collaborators, producers, recording and mastering engineers.

Digging into their own archives for unheard gems, they decided to reach out to like minded artists for their own contributions, and the response was overwhelming!

///////

Trigger Warning

////

FLEA FRUSCIANTE HASKINS and DEANGELIS - A System For Shutting Everything Out

The Flea/Frusciante song was recorded on the fly in 2002, when the musicians were all rehearsing at the same L.A. studio. “I was so excited and nervous to work with them, and when we got together, I realized it was the same for them too,” Haskins recalls. “It has a very post-punk kind of vibe. It was very spontaneous and we made it up instantly. When we had the music, Flea said, ‘John, go and sing.’ He was a little reticent, but Flea said, ‘you can do this. Go. Get your [lyric] book.’ He sang this amazing vocal performance on the first take. A couple days later, I realized we didn’t have a title, so I called up John and said, ‘you came up the lyrics. Could you give me a title?’ There was a pause and he said, ‘A System for Shutting Everything Out,’ which just made me laugh. I’ve had some pivotal moments of working with other artists where I’ve had to pinch myself, and this was another one of them.”

////

There was supposed to be another Haskin's contribution on it but it must have been dropped from the final release a cover of Bauhaus’ “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” with Hannah Vandermolen, Nine Inch Nails’ Danny Lohner and harpist Mary Lattimore

to be fair most of the monster compilations are always going to be mixed bag...

But this one is of the very best

Saving for a Custom Van which is tribute to Adam Schlesinger so the songs are already going be great.  Been thinking about re-listening to this recently

https://fatherdaughterrecords.bandcamp.com/album/saving-for-a-custom-van

The Red Hot Org compilations are always well thought out

There was the "Going To Georgia" compilation that Merge pulled together which their artists doing covers of  Georgia-centric songs. But, it's no longer available for purchase.

I think in general the more focused the compilation is the likely of it getting repeat listens are likely greater.  I'm sure they put out those 90 tracks ones out so as to pickup as many hardcore fans of the bands/artists who are liable to buy it for the one track they are likely interested in.

I find this interesting they took the title of one of my favorite TMG songs
TMG is on the compliation and doesn't do this song

and he even retired this song

Going to Georgia ...is one of the most popular Mountain Goats songs from the lo-fi era, John Darnielle has disavowed it, believing it is misogynistic and romanticizes gun violence. the song was 'retired' in 2012

"I honestly don't want to play 'Going to Georgia' ever again. I really confronted my old catalog because I began getting more and more engaged with my feminism, and I think 'Going to Georgia' is a bullshit song. Bottom line: I know it's got a nice melody, and it's got a cool vibe, but that dude is bullshit and I don't want to be involved with him anymore. I'm not saying I'll never play it, I probably will, especially when the three of us are playing it kind of rocks, but I wish its lyrics were different, I don't know what to do with that. I don't like what's going on in that song. It seems daring and edgy to a 26-year-old dude to have a guy who goes down with a gun for unknown purposes to see somebody he claims to love, but to my present self, that guy is a fucking asshole. I don't like to celebrate things like that. I'm not ashamed of the song, the song has a vibe, I can't deny it, and I listen to Cannibal Corpse, you know. The song 'Fucked with a Knife,'there aren't multiple readings of that song. That song is a terrible, horrible song but you know, my own part in that stuff, I don't know. I have complex feelings about it." -- 2012-06-22 - Rio Theater - Vancouver, British Columbia

It’s a real shame how John has disavowed and run from an entire period of songwriting.

Imagine if Bob Dylan turned his back on anything before the motorcycle crash.

I was really passionate about Mountain Goats for a while. I even hosted fans from other states when they came into DC to see him at the Black Cat. It was an interesting community. I remember we went backstage at his Black Cat show and hung out.

Then it just felt like he disavowed that and started anew. I can understand he felt boxed in and how many “Going to….”  Songs can you write? Also the lyrics in those years tapped into some highly personal and deep romanticism that invariably he and his fanbase would outgrow. I get that… but the way he went about it seemed like an almost violent rejection.

I used to listen to him so much. I never listen to him anymore and I haven’t had any desire to see him live in 25 years. I outgrew him, he outgrew himself or both?

I mean John’s attitude about his 1990s stuff is literally to suppress it! Most of it has never been reissued or a one time 1000 copy pressing 20 years ago. It’s very extreme and for those of us whom that stuff mattered so much for…so deeply and personally….it’s perplexing and even troubling.

But you do you John.

I tend to agree...i think it's pretty lame when bands disavow older material, whether due to lyrical content or just stylistic changes.  Say what you want, but it's one of the things I love about Ween...they still play a bunch of amateur songs written in their teen years that don't exactly hold-up culturally.

But i also get it, especially if it came from a dark place, misogynistically speaking.   Not exactly the same, but it's like the Beastie Boys pretty much only performing one song from License to Ill in their later years (blanking on which one...Slow and Low maybe?).  I'm guessing it's hard for some performs to dig into songs like that as you get older.

But am I wrong in thinking he just played this one out a year or two back?  I feel like i saw videos from an outdoor NYC show.

Imagine if Bob Dylan cut out most of his early 60s breakup songs cause he felt they came from a misogynistic place!!!

I find Bob’s pre motorcycle crash songs far more misogynistic than John’s and hell I admit I never saw this misogynistic bent to John’s songs. Even some post crash stuff like Idiot Wind by Bob is way way more out there than John…

“The most remarkable thing about coming home to you….”

I never found John’s stuff misogynistic. I found it incredibly romantic.

Anyway that’s it for me on this… it’s actually kind of painful and hurts. There was no need for that John.

what gets me on this topic

the song seems to promote love and someone helping someone who is clearly hurting just by being there and present for them
stopping them from suicide
Jez that sounds insanely positive and good to me

I don't know how its "misogynistic and romanticizes gun violence."
unless a subtext is he is going there to kill her?

saw someone say this
This song is about being pissed off at someone (most likely a woman), and driving to middle of nowhere Georgia to kill her, but then reconsidering once he got there and saw her.

it's honestly one of my all-time favorite songs and can't imagine a world without it
Title: Re: Bandcamp

Same. I find it incredible and positive.

The whole thing with what happened to John is madness.

I mean plenty of artists write songs coming from one place and when they put them out there they are received by people from a totally different place. It’s an incredibly arrogant view of songwriting if John really thinks like that because so many musicians from Dylan on have spoken of songwriting as an act where you channel something that is already there functioning as a conduit. John makes it all about Himself. The person listening to the song apparently can have no personal relationship of their own to the song or if they do well John doesn’t want them to and suppresses the song.

And plenty of artists put out songs and then later on are dismissive of them:@“ “I was in a different place then….” Etc etc but they don’t suppress hundreds of songs with which people have developed their own relationships.

I mean shit imagine if Tweedy used John’s rationale?

Ok we have beat this to death, but I have found another quote by john that gives me slightly his perspective ...

""If you should find yourself in this song, heaven forbid, don't say 'Oh! What's the chance for epiphany here?'

Call the cops. There's a fucking psychopath on my porch. I hate him, and I want him to go to jail.

And if the police say 'What if he's having some deep feelings?' Tell them 'Take your patriarchal bullshit down to the garbage can where it belongs and haul this guy off to jail because he has a gun."" 2016-11-21 - Second City - Chicago, IL

although this coda makes me almost angry

At this show, John proceeded to play "Going to Georgia" after an audience member offered him $60.

Greetings,

Bandcamp Friday returns on May 2.

For 24 hours, we’re waiving our revenue share, meaning more of your money goes directly to the artists and labels you support.

Since launching Bandcamp Friday in 2020, fans have paid over $130 million directly to artists and labels through this initiative. That support has helped them pay rent, fund tours, press records, and even raise money for causes they care about.

It’s a simple idea with real impact: buy music and merch you love, and give artists a boost when they need it most.

Mark your calendar. Start building your wishlist. Bandcamp Friday is coming.
