I don't. But it sure would be cool if one of the three guys above got the nomination.

WAMU is treating this like such a big deal they're interviewing what seems like every fucking lay Catholic walking down Pennsylvania.
-
who is "we"? Snarky American - in some cases gay- hipsters that go to rock shows?
If that is the "we" I don't think "we" care....
I never been comfortable being in a "we" though...more an "I"...
Not a big fan of the current Pope so hoping for something a little more progressive but not holding my breath....ideally a non-European.... I think either way its great the current Pope is resigning.

If I were message board savvy enough to do it, I'd insert a photo of the singer from Ghost.

Ghana's Cardinal Peter Turkson 3/1
Canada's Cardinal Marc Ouellet 7/2
Nigeria's Cardinal Francis Arinze 4/1
Bono 1,000/1
Father Dougal Maguire 1,000/1

If I had any guts, I'd bet on Arinze, but the solid money is on Turkson.

I have been wondering this since yesterday. Could it ever be possible for someone who was not a catholic to pretend to be, become a priest and con his way to the Papacy? And then once there, come clean? Or are there way too many checks? Also, I guess this person would also have to be a sociopath since such a con would take a lifetime. I likened it yesterday to an undercover cop becoming a mob boss but think this would take a hell of a lot more effort and be way less possible.

You ought to read this book: Windswept House: A Vatican Novel by Malachi Martin (http://www.amazon.com/Windswept-House-Vatican-Malachi-Martin/dp/0385492316/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360678936&sr=1-2&keywords=Malachy+Martin).
Here's the Amazon book description:
"The Cold War has ended. With a scope and daring not possible until now, an unlikely international alliance of top-level political, financial, and religious interests sees the way clear at last to its ultimate goal: the establishment of a single global society. Utopia.
These are men with nothing in common but immense power and a towering ambition for still more. With world unity and prosperity as their slogan--and with betrayal, scandal, and murder as their ready weapons--they have the means and the will to capture as their own the perfect global machinery for their plans: the oldest, wiliest, and most stable political chancery in the world--the Vatican.
At the vortex of this lethal struggle stands the embattled Pope, a geopolitical genius whose elimination is the short-term solution to a long-term goal, and two American brothers, Paul and Christian Gladstone, one a lawyer and the other a priest, who appear to be the perfect pawns. One falls prey to the sharp teeth of greed for power. The other will become one of the Slavic Pontiff's closest allies...and will discover the darkest secrets at the very heart of papal Rome."
Though I have had a copy for many years, I've yet to read it. Interesting but I also have an aversion to the Catholic Church, meaning the man-made orginization as opposed to the religion itself. Malachi Martin was a Catholic priest and well high up at the Vatican. If I remember correctly, he was the Vatican's Excorcist. The man is dead now but was very intriguing. Use to hear a lot of good and extensive interviews with him and there are those who believe that he was murdered for exposing dirt withinside. Have no idea if that's what happened or not. Supposedly, though his books were fiction, he was putting all sorts of truths inside but could not come out and tell as so.
There's also a lot of revelations (again, haven't a clue whether or not there's any truth to this) that there is a Satanic order within that has, or is about to, take control of the Vatican. Not sure if it's written about in this particular book or one of his others. Apparently, the Pope is chosen from the Knights of Malta which is some sort of branch of the Masons, even though the Catholic Church came out against the Masons. Wouldn't be the first I've seen hypocrisy from the Church which is, in part, why I left the official Church when I was 15. Not an atheist but I don't need a bunch of old men to be my go-between with God.
There's also some belief that the next Pope will be the very last one. I don't keep up with that stuff but have heard it for many years. Here's some random info (http://www.bibleprobe.com/last10popes.htm) I just googled on the web for those so inclined to do any further research.
Heard last night that there are those who believe that this Pope may have left because of some major money laundering scandal about to come out regarding the Vatican Bank. Don't know but it wouldn't surprise me considering how corrupt most of these big banksters are and I think that the Vatican Bank is the largest in the world. That alone turns me off as well as knowing they hoard tons of the best art and other treasures in the world. Kind of get a kick out of them having the best Observatory in the world except can't help but wonder why. Yet they wanted to condemn Galileo. Again, bunch of hypocrits! No wonder the Maifa loves them!

Should have taken the field....
Argentinian Cardinal BERGOGLIO is the new pope, you may now refer to him as Francis I.
EDIT - I stand corrected. I have been informed he was 33-1 to become Pope.

Does this mean we're going to get more Latino rock at the 9:30 Club?

Meet the new pope
Same as the old pope

No joke...for a split second I looked for the "Like" or "Favorite" button for this post.

I always thought Sandri -the other Argentine Cardinal- and Bergoglio had a good chances Vansmack..but thought Bergoglio's age played against him and Sandri had the better chance.... I guess seeing how he had finished runner up last time I should have realized he had a good chance.
First Jesuit to be elected Pope....that may be the bigger story but is being overshadowed by his being from ouside Europe.
My mother absolutely loves Bergoglio as do many in Argentina...for his humility... a man who rides the collectivo buses, etc... Of course his views on homosexuality and abortion are far outside the American mainstream even the Argentine mainstream..but he has spoken truth to power in Argentina so much so the last two president's have chosen to not attend his church and take the kick in the groin.
Bring on the Latino Rock! ;D

Meet the new pope
Same as the old pope
oh I don't think so Shemp....the old pope came from the curia.. the Vatican's bureaucracy.....he was as old guard and conservative as they come..
The new pope is - if you can be a cardinal and be so, an outsider- from outside Rome, from outside the Vatican City bureaucracy (the "curia"), a Jesuit, a man who rides the buses, a preacher...
I understand the skepticism.. but this is a very different man from Ratzinger.
but we shall see....
-
76 years old? Can't they ever elect a guy who isn't ancient? Anyway does the pope even matter these days? It's not like he is going to lead a crusade or anything cool.
-
They need it to be someone old so he can pretend not to remember or understand the vast conspiracy to cover up all the priest rapes.
-
There was some kind of anti-Mafia raid the other day on one of the candidates offices. Think if was one of the Italian guys.
Oh, and James' comment about more Latino Rock at the club has got to be POTW. ;D

i thought he needed to be old so he couldn't participate in the rapes.

so is this guy good? john paul 2.0, the holy messiah himself loved this guy, he seems to be a sincere person in the world of a man made religion gone bad by power and money . . . and yes, young dancing naked boys. they seem to love those over there. but this guy rejects all the money, all the power all the gift bags at cardinal get togethers. he expects frugality, he demands that you help the poor. what, what, what . . . as the needle on the record stops. he helps the poor. he will change the church, no? or will he be corrupted by the powers of when humans believe they are gods? like our presidents and congress.

My favorite thing I've read about the new pope. From CNN's homepage:
"He's known for caring for AIDS patients and preparing his own meals."
He's just like us!!!!

I've never cared for AIDS patients.
-
i did think it was amusing when they told the story of him washing the feet of aids patients. yeah, and, god this so wrong . . . but what in the hell is that going to do for them? how about donating all that fucking gold and precious art work from the vatican to cure aids. that would be a holy miracle right there. john paul becomes one with the lepers, and everybody wants to get into the act!

Did he hit Dewey Beach for seven summers resulting in skewed numbers as well?

Pope Francis a misogynist?
Here is the latest Urban Legend making its way through the internet like wildfire and being attributed to Pope Francis in 2007 when Cristina Kirchner was running for President of Argentina. The quote is:
The quote above begins with: ?Women are naturally inept to exercise political office..the order of nature and human activity teach us that a man is superior in the realm of politics??
?Télam? is the ?AP? or major press organization of Argentina. When people research all of the Télam articles of June 4, 2007, they come up empty for this quote. The reason is because the quote was invented out of thin air and posted in a ?Yahoo Answers? by an Argentinian who went by the name ?Bumper Crop? and who at the time did not cite a link because the entire phrase was posted to smear Cardinal Bergoglio and make him look like he was attacking Cristina Kirchner.
In addition, the phrase completely contradicts Bergoglio known friendship and admiration for various Argentine women who have held political office and who were congratulated by him upon election.
A man who is usually very critical of the Catholic Church, but honest about Urban Legends, has published a very good exposé of this fraud

-
And I'd argue that that quote is stupid and sexist and wrong, but falls short of misogynistic.
-
Of all the things wrong with the Catholic Church, we're going to share a made up a story to attack their misogyny?
There's plenty of true stories out there that provide more than enough fodder.
-

yes, but they're not on facebook so...
-
The Kirchners are pure garbage.. the fact this man has had disagreements with them only speaks well of him..
TELAM is not the Argentine AP because it is government owned and therefore not credible.
What I find interesting is there has been talk bout Bernard Law being in the same church yesterday and today an article- unsubstantiated to this point- says the Pope made a statement about not wanting him anywhere near...I hope it is true. Any Archbishop who covered up pedophile crimes and moved priests around needs to be retired yesterday and made to face criminal prosecution if possible.
But marginalizing these creeps and making it clear they are no longer welcome would be a good, if very late and inadequate, start in dealing with the pedofilia crisis.

There is always a tendency to want to believe that a Pope has always behaved in a saintly manner. But they are humans...
There's no need to make up stuff...we know his views on contraception are horrific...as are his views on homosexuals and any number of things... that is because those are the views of the church....
But one can always hope he'll clean up the Vatican a bit....
