I so very much prefer Dig Me Out...I was never a big fan of the hot rock.

REM = meh

Post by: atomic on May 15, 2014, 10:42:19 am
These are the only two albums by REM that I truely liked.  Saw REM on the Reckoning tour and they were pretty awful so I kind of gave up on them after that.  Bought the album once that had Stand on it.  Terrible.

Anyway back to the question.  Both great but I have to go with Reckoning.  So. Central Rain and Don't go Back to Rockville are better than anything on Murmur and the rest is pretty good.  So basically going hits over total quality.

I can't see Hutch's first album photo.  You might want to list the album title / band under photos from now on in case they get blocked.

Dig Me Out and Reckoning

But neither are my favorite albums by those bands, which would be The Woods and Fables of the Reconstruction.

Ok figured out the Hutch thing.  These are both Sleater Kinney albums.  I have never listened to any of their albums.  Caught the second half of their set at Lollapalooza and it was pretty amazing.  I think it was the next to the last show they ever did.   After they broke-up I was like whats the point and still have never heard them on album.  I guess I could listen to these today.  I have to say I hate Portlandia.

Reckoning and the Bends.

I'll pass on all other Radiohead albums and anything containing a member of Sleater-Kinney, including the band itself.

In atomic's defense, there aren't any rules; it just says the Album Showdown Thread.  It doesn't say that you can't compare/showdown related albums by different artists.

Like Fat of the Land vs Vegas

Shout at the Devil.

Too Fast for Love would be a better matchup.

I don't know, TFFL has this reputation of being their classic "punk"/Dolls album but I don't think it's that quality of an album. Shout is where they truly came into their own.

Oh, I agree.  My angle was more that Dr. Feelgood was MTV schlock and TFFL would have been a more worthy adversary for Shout.

I would go with the Queen is Dead but I have to say all the Smiths albums are great.... maybe the only ones i'm not as into are the collection of singles and b-sides..

I truly even love the last one so much.. i might pick the queen is dead because the boy with the thorn in his side is really hard to top but.......i like them all... meat is murder

the smiths where the last perfect band

belle and sebastian looked like they could do it but then they became a really bad joke.. there has been no band since the smiths with that perfect track record..

Siamese Dream

Infinite Sadness was too long, with too much filler.

Siamese Dream kicks ass from Cherub Rock till the end of the album.

(I do love both, but if I had to pick one it would be SD.  Also both have great covers, from the images down to the font)

I way prefer the first Smiths album. In fact I was listening to it last night.  The lyrics on the Queen is Dead aren't the best and most of the best songs were released as Singles before the album was released.

The last Smiths album was pretty bad.  Musically and lyrically.  I actually like some of Morrissey's early solo albums better than it.  Anyway the longer you go the harder it is to keep up a perfect record.  Depeche Mode kept it up longer than the Smiths.   Also,  I like the older Belle and Sebastian records better than the earlier ones.  Everyone except the last one was excellant though.  But they pretty much sound the same.  They aren't breaking new musical ground with each album and song.

Let It Be was so overproduced they released a stripped down version of it! They're both massively overproduced.

"Two of Us"  , "Maggie May"  and "Accross the Universe" are not overproduced at all.  And the single version of "Across the Universe' was way overproduced.  Paul McCarntney just had that version put out because he didn't do the overproduction.  I think Phil Spector did great with that album along with George Harrison's All things must pass' and John Lennon's "Imagine".  If you were going to do a naker version of an album Sgt Pepper would be the one to do.

Magical Mystery Tour isn't an album.  It was 5 song EP I believe.  The new release (us version) has singles added to it.  Like the Sgt Pepper era single Stawberry Fields/Penny Lane plus the non-album single All you need is love/Baby your a rich man

If you ever have an opportunity to see the movie Magical Mystery Tour.  Don't!!!!
