Edit:
This is my last list of releases and it was probably the hardest list make. I think 2014 had some excellent releases across all genres/subgenres of guitar based rock and roll music. From heavy metal to indie, there were some excellent releases. As with my first two lists, I made a mix that you can listen to on Mixcloud with a track from each release.

Lagwagon ? Hang
Sorority Noise ? forgettable
Nothing ? Guilty of Everything
Godflesh ? A World Lit Only by Fire
Swans ? To Be Kind
Cavalera Conspiracy ? Pandemonium
the Skull Defekts ? Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown
Second list, my favorite electronic releases (I use that term loosely, I know the SVI/Bloody Knives release is pretty guitar heavy)

List time! I personally am not ready with mine (plus there are a few more weeks of the year to go and I am waiting for a certain record label to send me four releases) but started working on it a couple nights ago.
I whittled the list of 2014 LPs and EPs that I really enjoyed down to 70; and plan to get it down to 50 (one list of 25 favorite rock releases and one list of 25 favorite non-rock releases; or 20 rock; 20 electronic; 10 hip-hop). I know some people around here thought musical pickings were slim this year, but I personally listened to a lot of great new music this year.
I plan on doing mixes on mixcloud of a song per release (like I did last year with Baltimore releases, dark electronic, and everything else):
my 2013 mixes

http://www.mixcloud.com/killsaly/hexenjagd-dragged-to-hell-2013-end-of-year-mix/
I was planning on writing a sentence or two for each release, explaining why i like them. I think this is helpful, since not all of us know the same artists or were exposed to the same releases, and can check out anything that sounds interesting.
I probably will just edit this thread with my list instead of replying...
So what did you listen to and love???
-
1) Real Estate -- Atlas
2) Ex Hex -- Rips
3) Brody Dalle -- Diploid Love
4) Shellac -- Dude Incredible
5) Aphex Twin -- Syro

Bump for update on my initial post with my favorite releases by Baltimore artists. I also have a link to a mix i made of all of the releases, and also a link to my blog where I briefly discuss each release.
-
Do these need to be actually available for purchase or is it ok if they are handed out for free at house parties?
-
In my blog post, each title links to a place where the music can be purchased.
-
My Baltimore list is not that obscure ::)
-
I might have misread your post. You can post whatever music you acquired this year. It is ok to love AC/DC.
-
awesome...just checkin'
the new Outer Body Llama record..... surprised its not on your list.... its local and all... first official release in about 13 years (well they had an unreleased "Black" album and also an EP but..)....

I do not listen to music because it is "local."
I do listen to a ton of great music coming out of Baltimore, and that is why Baltimore gets it's own list from me.
But I don't listen to many DC bands.
Or Annapolis bands (they would really be "local" to me).
I listen to what I like, and don't base anything on geographic proximity to myself.
-
well, you should give Outer Body Llama a listen even if they're not from Baltimore.....

10. Harry The Hipster-Hater, Who Really, Really Hates Hipsters. "This is all hipster music. I guess it's okay for hipsters, but I'm not enough of a hipster to like hipster picks like this. Too bad I'm not hipster enough. Maybe I'd like it better if I were more of a hipster." [His username: "Hutch."]

this like all discussions comes down to semantics... what is what we are agreeing constitutes a "hipster"?
I mean if its someone that likes to keep up with new music and continue to listen to new music I have no issue with that at all.. in fact I think its laudatory..
On the other hand if its someone that likes something new becuase others determine its cool or respectable to do so ....and then once the 15 minutes pass they move on to the next flavor of the month then I'm not sure there's much to that....
i prefer the term "hip".... A guy like Miles Davis was hip... some people have their finger on the pulse and carry a disproportionate influence on the collective.....
-
Ohmygod, Miles Davis? You're like in love with him!

We were in love...alas he passed away about 1991.... but we had some good times in the late 70s... particularly during his cocaine period....we would spend the years doing blow... it was very Rick Jamesy...
-
Hutch is actually Betty Davis!?!?
Wow your records are smokin'
-
I'm going to say definitively that my top favorite albums are
Pop/Rock - Mark Morriss "A Flash Of Darkness"
Funk/Soul - Bombay Royale - The Island of Dr. Electrico
Lots of other notable releases but these are flawless

5) Aphex Twin -- Syro
I have this one on my favorite electronic releases list. I thought it was a real return to form. Definitely light years better than Drukqs.

"Most often occurs at Disco Biscuits shows by spun-out kids on ketamine"
Just not sure where I can use this term (http://three.amaze.fm/web?q=boofing) in everyday conversation

stop the boofing!

When you boof, your anus cries. And nobody likes a leaky asshole. DON'T BOOF.
May 24, 2012
Excessive boofing causes fetuses to develop in the anal cavity. Please don't boof!
May 9, 2012
Boofing destroys civilizations.
April 26, 2012
For those of you who are unfamiliar with haikus, they are poems consisting of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five.
And now, a haiku.
do not boof because
your asshole will snap like an
old elastic band
April 12, 2012
I wouldn't boof if I were you! You could lose an eye! Or an anus!

i have a very short list... this year was spent diving into older, undiscovered music and listening to a lot of 2014 singles. i'm sure there's a lot for me to catch up on album-wise, still haven't given the ariel pink, shabazz palaces, or flying lotus releases enough time. really digging a few artists i'm just now catching wind of, like leon vynehall.
anyways, here's what i was into this year.
the few i played the shit out of:
the war on drugs - lost in a dream
perfume genius - too bright
angel olsen - burn your fire
parquet courts - sunbathing animal
protomartyr - under color of official right
swans - to be kind
courtney barnett - double ep
tops - picture you staring
deep sea diver - always waiting
-

I once knew a guy who boofed so often, that one day he farted and before his asshole could slam shut, he sucked up his entire room!! Now everyday, the poor sap gets home from work and crawls into his own ass to go to sleep. Makes ya think, huh?
February 7, 2012
true fact: adolf hitler used to boof assorted things (tylenol,gi joe action figures, 'ludes) the point is you dont wanna be like hitler do ya?
January 13, 2012
you've got no class when you shove things in yer ass

That one is on my last list (probably post it this weekend). It is a hard listen.

for me, i had to give it 120 minutes of full attention. i don't get anything out of it without listening to the whole thing, and i think i've only listened to it all the way through 4 times.
-
The previous one was just as long and IMO more digestible.
-

Agreed. The Seer was an easier listen.
My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky is my favorite of their 2000s releases.
-
Same here. All killer, no filler, as they say.
-
still waiting on the response to whether cassette only limited edition releases are ok for my list...

i think it should be a top 10 to have some meaning.. 30 albums? plus like 30 honorable mentions?
i'm talking about albums you will be listening to in a few years..not albums you gave a few spins and "liked"
-
My thread. No rules. If you dont like that you can start your own thread and post there.
You can post 100 albums if you want.
-

could you add some more though?

I am fairly confident that the albums that I listed constitute a comprehensive list of 2014 releases that I REALLY enjoyed listening to in 2014.
-
I am fairly confident that the albums that I listed constitute a comprehensive list of 2014 releases that I REALLY enjoyed listening to in 2014.
ah...but will you enjoy them in 2019?
that is the mark of a good record you know.....
-
Probably.
-
I am surprised my post was replied to this late. Usually it seems like this is tumbleweeds time around here.
-
Probably.
bold....very bold..
I can tell you as someone who has been around the block that it won't be so.... if you think about it rationally you'll see it can't be...sleep on it then get back to us...
(yeah... i'm awake listening to let it beard in my basement before i hit the hay.. ..4th side to go...final beer...not much going on)
-
I like some music that I liked 20 years ago.
I also like quite a lot of music that I liked five years ago.
-
I like stuff from ten years ago.
Sometimes I hear music made before I was born, and I like it for some reason.
Sometimes music that I liked last year is not in heavy rotation for me.
So many variables.
-
Does one really know what one will have in heavy rotation in five years time?
-
Hutch asked if I would enjoy them in 2019, not if they would be in heavy rotation. I am sure whatever I have in heavy rotation in 2019 will be from 2018 and 2019. We shall see though, and I will make a list for it.
-
I stopped trying to listen to everything years ago because attempts to do that are totally futile. I also haven't made an album list in years.
They'd change almost immediately after I'd have finished them.
Might play the show list game, though!
Finally got around to both Ben Frost and Lawrence English the other night. Both are excellent!
yes you've listened to a ton of excellent music this year.. i'm curious to see a top 10 or top 20 from you.... given how much excellent new music you've heard... the pressure on you must be pretty intense at this time...

I'm with Az on making lists, it's almost to list what didn't thrill me
-
D'Angelo just fucked up everybody's shit.
-
D'Angelo just fucked up everybody's shit.
God no kidding. This is one internet circle jerk that I will gladly participate in.
-
Whirr 'Sway' is getting a lot of play from me these last weeks of 2014. It is weird hearing them with a male singer.
