Favorite LPs/EPs of 2014
« on: November 20, 2014, 03:34:09 pm »
Edit:
This is my last list of releases and it was  probably the hardest list make.  I think 2014 had some excellent releases across all genres/subgenres of guitar based rock and roll music.  From heavy metal to indie, there were some excellent releases.  As with my first two lists, I made a mix that you can listen to on Mixcloud with a track from each release.

Mixcloud Link: https://www.mixcloud.com/killsaly/dragged-to-hell-2014-end-of-year-rock-mix/

Ramesh ? the King
Holy Wave ? Relax
Temples ? Sun Structures
Lagwagon ? Hang
Sorority Noise ? forgettable
Nothing ? Guilty of Everything
Godflesh ? A World Lit Only by Fire
Swans ? To Be Kind
Cavalera Conspiracy ? Pandemonium
the Skull Defekts ? Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown

Second list, my favorite electronic releases (I use that term loosely, I know the SVI/Bloody Knives release is pretty guitar heavy)

Mixcloud mix: http://www.mixcloud.com/killsaly/dragged-to-hell-2014-end-of-year-electronic-mix/

That Was Then This is Now - Fables
Screen Vinyl Image/Bloody Knives - Split
Thom Yorke - Tomorrow's Modern Boxes
clipping. - clppng
Meth Dad - Remixes
the Body - I shall die here
Pharmakon - Bestial Burden
Aphex Twin - Syro
??? (Crosses) - Crosses
Zola Jesus - Taiga

Quote
List time!  I personally am not ready with mine (plus there are a few more weeks of the year to go and I am waiting for a certain record label to send me four releases) but started working on it a couple nights ago.

I whittled the list of 2014 LPs and EPs that I really enjoyed down to 70; and plan to get it down to 50 (one list of 25 favorite rock releases and one list of 25 favorite non-rock releases; or 20 rock; 20 electronic; 10 hip-hop).  I know some people around here thought musical pickings were slim this year, but I personally listened to a lot of great new music this year.

I plan on doing mixes on mixcloud of a song per release (like I did last year with Baltimore releases, dark electronic, and everything else):
my 2013 mixes

http://www.mixcloud.com/killsaly/hexenjagd-dragged-to-hell-2013-end-of-year-mix/

I was planning on writing a sentence or two for each release, explaining why i like them.  I think this is helpful, since not all of us know the same artists or were exposed to the same releases, and can check out anything that sounds interesting.

I probably will just edit this thread with my list instead of replying...

So what did you listen to and love???

Bump for update on my initial post with my favorite releases by Baltimore artists.  I also have a link to a mix i made of all of the releases, and also a link to my blog where I briefly discuss each release.

Do these need to be actually available for purchase or is it ok if they are handed out for free at house parties?

In my blog post, each title links to a place where the music can be purchased.

I might have misread your post.  You can post whatever music you acquired this year.  It is ok to love AC/DC.

I do not listen to music because it is "local."

I do listen to a ton of great music coming out of Baltimore, and that is why Baltimore gets it's own list from me.

But I don't listen to many DC bands.

Or Annapolis bands (they would really be "local" to me).

I listen to what I like, and don't base anything on geographic proximity to myself.

this like all discussions comes down to semantics... what is what we are agreeing constitutes a "hipster"?

I mean if its someone that likes to keep up with new music and continue to listen to new music I have no issue with that at all.. in fact I think its laudatory..

On the other hand if its someone that likes something new becuase others determine its cool or respectable to do so ....and then once the 15 minutes pass they move on to the next flavor of the month then I'm not sure there's much to that....

i prefer the term "hip".... A guy like Miles Davis was hip... some people have their finger on the pulse and carry a disproportionate influence on the collective.....
