so i just mowed lawn... neighbor mows twice a week..
do i need to up my game?
-
I think it depends on the lawn.
I may be the only person in my neighborhood who doesn't pay someone else to mow his lawn. Every other week for me.
-
You should hire a poor person of Hispanic descent to do it for y-- Oh, wait nevermind.
-
OMG my lawn guy is totally ripping me off. I've tried to cancel, but he keeps showing up every week while I'm at work. Thing is, rather than billing me monthly, he sends me one bill at the end of the year. Hard to dispute that I didn't want the service after the fact. Predatory mowing is the new first world problem.
-
we have an acre to mow. three acres total. I am scared of riding lawn mowers. I like to lay on the deck in the sun as my partner does it. we are gay fabulous in our neighborhood.
-
I retired from mowing my lawn a few years ago, but mowing your lawn twice a week is ludicrous.

A BMI of 21.6 and now this?

Lucky you. I have to mow all three of mine.
Riding mowers are awesome. The hour-and-forty-five it takes to mow the grass is a chance to get away from everyone and think.

why don't you just get a Roomba for you lawn

this thread is a turning point. started with parking in the 'mats thread, but it's now official:
the 930 bboard is old.

but since we're talking suburban first-world problems: how do y'all deal with compaction?
soil around my place is 99% clay. with time, the most trodden parts of the lawn have gotten so compacted and hard that grass won't grow any more. tried taking out plugs but the patches remain bald (talking about the yard, hair is doing just fine thank you very much).
muchas grassy-ass.
-
Ouch.
Sounds like you need an expensive, multi-stage remediation.
You'll first need to plow under your entire yard, then mix in 4%-6% clean fine sand, based on the volume of clay assuming a three-foot deep box. Ideally, you'd re-till, then wait for 10 days or until the next soaking rain. At that point, you want to remove 30% - 40% of the volume of the new mixture (assuming you want to keep the same, level yard), then replace it with organic humus. (Essentially, you've just built the ideal loam.)
A truly standup guy would introduce a colony of earthworms, grubs and other beneficial insects to add life (ha!) and longevity to your soil.
Finally add a healthy coating of grass seed, daily watering - unless it rains - and hopefully lots of sunshine. You'll want to keep humans and large animals off the grass while it's growing, so a temporary fence (or webbing) may be necessary depending on your setup.
In no time, you'll have ultimate bragging rights and will put your neighbors lawns to shame.

Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra?
-
btw, please don't actually do any of that. I really just made it all up on the spot. Consult an actual lawncare professional prior to seeking treatment.
-
this is some funny sh*t right here.
what you describe - digging up, adding sand and humus, re-seeding and keeping weight off it - is exactly what i've been considering doing. just too lazy...
Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra?
speedball of all 3.
-
its so fucking cute, that you put an asterisk instead of saying the actual fucking cuss word.
-
grateful...damn didn't read your second post and am mid way in my backyard overhaul!
the clay in the soil in my yard is crazy
I dug a 1 ft deep hole and it was all clay, my daughter took some and made a snowman...let it sit in the sun for a few hours and it was rock hard like a piece of tera cotta
-
Ahh well you'll be a better man for it. But you've really got to dig down three feet to make it count!
-
that is some back breaking work
My neighbor rented a roto-till from HomeDepot and it was useless
-
Don't see a lot of answers
part of the problem is part of our yards have no fence separating them so if I slack off its pretty bad...maybe a weed spreads over there you know? but mowing twice a week?? isn't that a bit crazy
-
Here is my take
You mow the lawn when it's needs mowed, not on a weekly schedule. Like right now it's growing crazy fast. I'm pretty sure it won't grow as fast any more. the trees are now covered in leaves and the spring soak of rain is coming to an end.
Then again your neighbor may just have ocd
-
Yeah, don't do any more than whatever feels good to you. Unless neighbor is moving. Then maybe do a little extra the day before an open house.

so neighbor mows lawn this past Friday.. I mow lawn Monday at about noon...five hours later neighbor mows lawn...
is the neighbor not overdoing it a bit? Mowing a huge lawn every three days??
I sometimes get the feeling its a bit passive aggressive...then again he is obsessed with his house and also I think he does it as "workout".
In other lawn news the neighbor on the other side of my house came by... there is a fence separating a tiny strip of my yard from his..anyways he just bought house a few months ago and came by asking "Is that garbage yours?" Took me a while to register he was speaking about the tiny strip of lawn I hadn't mowed for a while.. anyways, the upshot is the weeds growing on that strip have spread to his lawn (right by fence).. I said "Ughh Yah..sorry".. he said "don't worry i'll get my guy to do it.. is it ok if he rips it all out from the roots up?" I said yeah... felt real bad..anyways, I waited til Monday and then mowed the strip too.... I figure his man hasn't come by yet.....Looking at his lawn I now do notice some weeds there adjoining the fence separating our lawns...we made some chit chat about his new baby so I think everything is ok but I definitely felt pretty low...
Belatedly i realized i could have brought up some OPM cops/detectives coming by a few weeks ago asking about him for a background check..but it was too late..
so I am defintely having lawn issues and hope I am not going to be run out of hood soon... :)
I need to charge up the weed whacker ASAP and get going on that....
more to follow...

Just dose the stuff with a Vinegar & Salt solution a Weed Killer
1 Pour 1 gallon of white vinegar into a bucket. Everyday 5-percent household white vinegar is fine for this weed killer. You won?t need higher, more expensive concentrations such as 10 or 20 percent. It may take two or three days longer to kill the weeds with the lower concentration, but they will die.
2 Add 1 cup of table salt. Stir the solution with a long-handled spoon until all the salt dissolves completely.
3 Stir in 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. This will act as a surfactant and make the vinegar and salt solution adhere to the weeds more efficiently. Blend thoroughly.
4 Funnel the weed killer into a plastic spray bottle.
5 Drench the weeds with the solution on a dry, sunny day. Coat all surfaces well with the spray. Any plants soaked with this solution will die within several days. They won?t be back and nothing else will ever grow there.
6 Funnel any leftover weed killer into an empty plastic container. Cap it tightly. Label it clearly and store in a cool, dark spot indefinitely.
