Title: albums del 2016
Post by: hutch on October 24, 2015, 11:26:09 am
new bowie album blackstar drops jan. 8 (birthday 69).. in retrospect new day was just a bit too sedate and normal for me so I hope this is true although it almost reads made up:

The album is mentioned in The Times ( UK) The article claims a "Bowie insider" described it as "completely bonkers" and says the album is 7 songs/45 minutes & the music is " long jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by Can and Kraftwerk"
The single is " 10 minutes long and contains Gregorian chants, a soul section, various electronic beats and bleeps..,There is no radio edit either;it's all or nothing."

YES!!
i wonder if "sue" or "tis a pity" from that recent rsd 10" will be on there.
those were pretty "bonkers" tunes, but i'd to like to hear him go 'totally scott walker' on us.

Black Sabbath Has One More CD to Come...But You'll Need to Attend 'The End' Concerts to Buy it (http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6844127/black-sabbath-cd-the-end-concerts)

"We went into the studio with 13 songs -- which is why the album is called '13,'" Butler explained during a conference call with reporters. "We thought we'd put out an album of 13 songs, but when we were in the studio we wrote another three songs, which brought ti up to 16 and then we left it to (producer) Rick Rubin to pick which songs would go on the album, and to give it some light and shade he picked the eight songs that we on the 13 album. We put a few songs on deluxe versions of the album and then we had the four left over..."

I like Blackstar and have to open the Megadeth one... they had this deal at target that if you get the cd you can go on a website , put your info in and they will send you a free LP.. I got to do that... I did that last year for the Stones Sticky Fingers deluxe and they sent me a free LP>. its a pretty cool deal... as far as i know only target does that and i haven't seen any other issues they've done that with..

I just got the new Lucinda Williams in the mail today (signed) and probably will listen to it next.. right now I'm playing Bob Weir's Ace LP.. what a great record..but its from 1972...so not the concern of this thread..

I take it you stream everything you hear on the internet? Which site do you use for your streaming?

In all seriousness: Bandcamp, iTunes (rarity), Amazon, hard copies of stuff from bands at shows, etc.

the Black Tusk record is great, I really like it. Love how their 3 voices all work together, which makes Jonathan Athon's death just a fucking tragedy.

Jake Bugg

Bugg revealed in 2015 that he had worked with Beastie Boys' Mike D on his third record and that the upcoming effort is "entirely self-written and almost entirely self-produced".
Bugg said the difference between the new album and its predecessor is the "grooves", adding: "There's songs people can actually dance to. I've been listening to [UK station] Smooth Radio. Those songs from the '70s, there was a warmth about them that you don't get in pop nowadays."
He also described his new material as "darker" than his previous work

this new single single  (https://youtu.be/tNBTOSNpmKQ)is very stripped down
definitely can't dance to that one

word is he recorded the 3rd album and the record co said, screw this...the demos are better and we're releasing that

Still regretting missing his 930 show
he's doing a small US tour...no dc date yet (HEY SETH!)

Breeders are recording...

I continually get teased with FB posts about recording and this one made me lol

Quote from: Josephine Wiggs
Studio Report: Tech Notes by Josephine

When I arrived at rehearsal, Kim was playing a riff on the bass. She gestured toward her Goldtop guitar and said, ?You work out something to play on that."

Yesterday, about to record my, ahem, guitar solo, I observed that the strings felt as responsive as? well? actual string?which is, ‪#‎tbt‬, how Kim likes it. I hesitated to ask, but was surprised when she agreed to installing a new set.

Later, when Kim played the guitar, she bemoaned it's zesty brightness and dearth of dark earthy tones. New strings should be subdued, according to the Kim Deal school of thought, just as pre-show flyaway hair is tamed with the application of a slice of ham from the deli tray. She proceeded to smear a technical mixture of hand lotion, coffee grounds and butter onto the strings.

Still too crisp for her, we rummaged in a drawer and found some strings possibly even older than those I took off. I unfurl them and ask rhetorically "Do you care that there is rust on them?"

I am going to continue to do this all year.  I want to show how hard it is for me to do a top 10 list, and why mine are usually top 50 or whatever... I get that most people would not even consider listening to that many new albums in a year, let alone less than half a year.  Also I am not including EVERY SINGLE ALBUM.  My iTunes playlist of music released in 2016 is at 5,665 songs (not sure how many albums, i hate how they changed playlist view).

My additions since last update:
Wytch Hazel - Prelude
Skold - the Undoing
the Winstons - the Winstons
Skating Polly - the Big Fit
The Zenith Passage - Solipsist
God's Hate - Mass Murder
Necrot - the Labyrinth
Harley Flanagan  - Cro-Mags
Sri Aurobindo - Psychic Process
Mantar - Ode to the Flame
Pity Sex - White Hot Moon
Green River - 1984 Demos
Spark Master Tape - Silhouette of a Sunkken City
Xiu Xiu - Plays the Music of Twin Peaks
Jacober - Glass Splinter
Ultraklystron - Null Signifier
Surgical Meth Machine - Surgical Meth Machine
Mint Julep - Broke Devotion
Choir Of Young Believers - Grasque
Flasher - S/T
Arsirius - Lvdi Incipiant
Excöriator - The Moaning of Life
Primal Fear - Rule Breaker

one the one hand, that's indeed a big list to cull from.

on the other, i say grow a pair and make the cull already ;D  you're asked for a top-10 list and you've got 20 candidates at the moment?  whittle down that list until it's half the size.  whether we've listed to 50 or 500 albums in the past year, we've all heard more than 10 excellent albums.  if you listened to 500, you might need an extra round or two of saying "this album was excellent, but not quite as excellent as these others, so sorry..." but i don't get how it's somehow impossible...

I did not use the word impossible in my post... I said "hard".

thanks for reminding me of that.

but by saying that your top-20 list can't be made into a top-10 list, aren't you saying it's impossible? ;D

whatever, you make whatever kind of list you like, and we'll all enjoy reading it and (hopefully) learn something.

new bowie album blackstar drops jan. 8 (birthday 69).. in retrospect new day was just a bit too sedate and normal for me so I hope this is true although it almost reads made up

I happened to click on page 1 and this was the op and it just made me sad to think we had no idea he was about to die. What a wonderful album to leave with. Definitely going to be my #1 of the year for emotional reasons as much as anything, but its genuinely a great album and I play it all the time and mull.

great band name.

µ-ziq - RY30 Trax

the ry30 is an old-school drum machine (from the 80's?).

Aberystwyth Marine was tight, and RY30 Trax is really good too... I could definitely have seen myself listening to this in 1997 (would have probably been around then that I was starting to experiment with different electronic stuff)..

Quote
Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas is releasing another album of archival µ-Ziq material on his label this week.

The tracks on RY30 Trax date from 1995, and were made when Paradinas was recording an album for Warp under his Jake Slazenger alias. According to RA, the album is named after the Yamaha RY30 drum machine Paradinas used at the time.

?They were always intended to belong together as an album and now we?re proud to make them available to you twenty years later,? the label writes.

RY30 Trax is latest in a run of archival material from Paradinas. It started in 2013 with Somerset Avenue Tracks, and continued last year when he released several tracks to SoundCloud recorded when he was 10 years old.

Since then Paradinas has gone further into the µ-Ziq vault, uploading 100 old tracks to SoundCloud last year in the wake of the Aphex Twin track dump, along with a remix of his IDM contemporary?s ?Analogue Bubblebath.?

Most of these tracks have disappeared from SoundCloud, but earlier this year Paradinas released Aberystwyth Marine, a collection of productions made between 1996 and 1998.

I assume that King Khan will play a bunch of this at the BC show in june...not sure how excited I am about that.
but might be fun stuff??

Let Me Hang You

by William S. Burroughs

Twenty years ago, William S. Burroughs was asked to record an audio version of his favorite parts of Naked Lunch. Longtime associates and producers Hal Willner and James Grauerholz produced several sessions, and they recruited a team of world class musicians to help. Famed for their Naked City involvement, Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz contributed their genius, as well as Eyvind Kang, just to name a few. The recordings were then abandoned and collecting dust on a musty shelf, as forgotten as a piece of rancid ectoplasm on a peepshow floor.

In 2015, Hal Willner decided to reopen this unfinished masterpiece and asked help from King Khan (a musician that he and Lou Reed admired and became fast friends with). Hal sent Khan all of the recordings and asked him to add his gris gris to this extremely perverted gumbo... and history was made and the scum began to rise!

King Khan recruited M Lamar, the creator of the "Negrogothic" movement and the identical twin brother of transgender actress Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), and The Frowning Clouds, a band of young Australian boys who have mastered the sixties garage punk sound -- and that perhaps WSB would have also enjoyed for other purposes a long time ago.

Let Me Hang You is a collection of depraved genius straight from the godfather of punk's very own mouth. If chills and thrills are what you seek, then look no further -- here is the bible of freakdom, recited by the pope of the underground... Now, pull the chair from underneath you and see what happens!

Maybe Lydia doesn't sell albums because she's a bit of a porky midget and she's married to her bass player (who is kinda sorta hotter than her in a tall caveman kind of way). Perhaps if she were hotter and more single she'd sell more albums to the balding 40something men who buy that kind of music?  I know Courtney Barnett looks like the lesbian Paul McCartney and she still manages to sell, but she's got the Australian Kurt Cobain thing going for her musically. Or maybe she doesn't sell because she's on Bloodshot, and how many Bloodshot artists sell more than 50 albums per release?

I bet my college roommate who had a strong preference for ethnic women with big butts and who married an African-American woman (with a big butt) would not find KM attractive at all.

And I'd go as far as to say she's "not my type" either. She's attractive in a generic, boring All-American apple pie kind of way. Then again, who am I kidding. I'm a nearly 50 male. If I were single and had a chance to hit it, I'm not turning her down because she's not my type.

My list so far.. not what I listened to but what I really really like that came out this year..

1. Lucinda WIlliams- GOH20 (this is the best thing that has come out and i doubt can be bested..)
2. RHCP- The Getaway (really shoudl be called a RHCP and Dangermouse album not a RHCP album)
3. David Bowie- Blackstar (I can't give everything away....)
4. Iggy Pop- Depression whatever (Is a clear step behind the idiot/lust for life.. but its really good!)

a few other good albums but nothing that would is so good that would make a best of list.. the new Def Leppard and Cheap Trick records are good..  so far the Paul Simon is like parsley... the new Guided by Voices is record is awful..hate to say it...Pet Shop Boys has potential....got to get the new underworld at some point but in no hurry....I suppose the Dylan is a masterpiece but its the last thing I want to put on...I've got the radiohead/avett brothers/that country dude smack loves and a few others sitting around the house but can't muster the excitement to open them...

probably the best thing I've heard this year is old jamaican music like augustus pablo....

Rival Sons -- Hollow Bones
4Minute -- Act 7
Whitney ? Light Upon the Lake
Perfume ? Cosmic Explorer
Chance the Rapper ? Coloring Book
Fifth Harmony - 7/27

I enjoyed the YG, Chance, Whitney, and Bowie releases on your list, but need to listen to them more before they enter any kind of favorite status.  I have not listened to Blackstar since my initial spin the day it came out (not because I did not like it, I have not listened to any of Bowie's music since his passing).

I did go through that, the verve is all that matters, phase.  they are, haunt magical and Richard's voice is one of those voices that can sell the whole essence of the band in sections.

The deluxe issue for A Storm in Heaven was a bit of a let down. Ordered the vinyl instead plus the deluxe Northern Soul from Amazon UK. Pretty excited for these.

Do. . . do people actually buy Phish studio records? Do they come with a lickable cover lined with LSD?

they do if they want to post about the band in the "bands i'm an expert in" thread.

Do they come with a lickable cover lined with LSD?

I have to say, I'd read that the Stones' "A Bigger Bang" record, which is the last one they released, was good so I grabbed it. And guess what?!? It really is good! Rough Justice is a great opener and the rest of the record is quality.

I enjoyed it as well.  Not essential or anything, I couldn't tell you where my copy is, but a good time.  I think the blues covers album could be fun.

The Songbook Collective

Paul Weller's current band who all have their own bands on the side, come together for an album on their own.  Which is a perfect warm up for TFC
