Gonna make it to the esteemed NOVA institution, Wolf Trap, for the Belle and Sebastian show on Wednesday and I'm really looking forward to it. Any suggestions? Apparently the capacity of the amphitheater is 7,000. That is much smaller than I originally imagined.
Are the seats BYOB or is that just the lawn? Can you still BYOB?
We'll be taking the Metro from DC. I know there is a Fairfax Connector bus running from McLean metro station.
Any other suggestions? This will be my sixth time seeing B&S and I have been very impressed with their setlists.
In the meantime, I'll get myself fired up for the show by listening to this epic performance of theirs from 9:30 in 2006. The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner is such an amazing song. Still gives me goosebumps to hear it live.

I don’t think one can take drinks to seats but you can leave cooler to side of pavilion
If you have seats you don’t have to worry about getting there early to claim real estate on lawn
They changed the seating configuration right? Otherwise if you are in the middle don’t get high as you have to navigate through 75 people
-

byob is only for the lawn, don't think they will allow you to bring BYOB to the seats. could buy one drink and keep the cup and do what starsky suggested (bring a cooler full of beer and leave it some where on the lawn and keep going back to get refils)
the b and s crowd seems very unlikely to take your cooler or contents...but who knows
Otherwise if you are in the middle don’t get high as you have to navigate through 75 people
so can you get high if it's only 25 people?
Apparently the capacity of the amphitheater is 7,000. That is much smaller than I originally imagined.
this seems off...does that just mean the pav is 7K? as I think 7k could fit on the lawn alone, but I'm horrible at crowd sizes
I was thinking of going too...but getting a tooth extracted that afternoon, so seems like a bad plan to make plans after that
-
Might buy tickets day of and bring the kiddos. Waiting on weather report for that day.
-
From sideputz:
so can you get high if it's only 25 people?
Me: well even high 25 people seems doable but when you had to get through 75 seats -with most people sitting down -while buzzed and stoned , for me it kind of sucked

Be Careful....Wolf trap is located on federal property!
-
I don’t get high anymore although there was that time two months ago….
-
just did a quick check on their website and they have updated policies for 2022
https://www.wolftrap.org/policies.aspx?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1db9no6j-AIVoj6tBh14XgiiEAAYASACEgIo9fD_BwE#filene
Size Guidelines for Coolers and Bags:
NEW maximum size for 2022: Allowable coolers size is no larger than 18”x 16” x 12”
Coolers with wheels are allowed as long as they do not exceed size limits.
Allowable bag size (including suitcases, duffel bags or backpacks) is no larger than 14”x 13” x 10”
No more than two items per person. Blankets, ground cloths, and purses are allowed and do not count toward the two item per person limit.
didn't know you couldn't bring food you bought at WT to your seat
Visitors with in-house seating may not take food to their seats. Visitors are welcome to purchase food inside the ticketed area, but must consume it on the Plaza or picnic table
-

noticed by the more cantankerous you've become
-
did a quick check and they are only like 50% sold seats in the Pav
So if you were making a day of decision...I'd definitely check the ticket resellers as their might be some good deals
I do think when that happens day of show...they should just randomly upgrade a few thousand lawn seats
seems weird to play to a half empty pav when there are a few thousand people on the lawn
-
There you go again
-
Pavilion drink policy was updated a few years ago. You must purchase a Wolf Trap plastic cup with snap lid, but once you have that, you can bring the drink to the seat. You still have to leave your cooler on the side. Can confirm one bottle of wine splits perfectly between two Wolf Trap cups.
-
protip: to kill time while waiting for the show to start, engage in a game of "spot the visible minority." it's surprisingly hard challenge at a B&S show - the Duotrigordle of the concert-people-watching world. i love me some Stuart Murdoch & Co., but.... VANIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLA

We played this once!
I like to play it while watching SEC football games with the proviso that it only counts if the person is a paid ticket holder.

730-8. Los bitchos
830-930 JB
10-11 B&S
11 is curfew

does JB have co-billing with B&S? do you really expect their set to be as long as the headliners?
i'm completely uninformed here, but i'd expect something like:
730-8. Los bitchos
815-9 JB
930-11 B&S
(make minor adjustments as needed, 8:20 instead of 815, etc.)

TAN: i used the word "proviso" at work yesterday, and people were utterly confused. "we can deploy on the 28th, with the proviso that we get signoff from QA by the 17th" = blank stares. you'd think i was speaking latin...

Yes, it appears that a co-headliner billing is the case.

Japanese Breakfast should be headlining. She put out one one the best albums AND one of the best books of 2021, and just playedSNL.
Belle and Sebastian was only a decent live band in their prime, which was 15+ years ago.
-
If you are taking metro there, price out how much it would cost to ride share back to DC. It is an utter PITA to get home via public transport from Wolftrap. It's taken me up to 2 hours in years past to come home and I live on the southern end of DC (shuttle bus, to just missed the orange line at west falls church and wait 18 minutes to l'enfant to transfer and wait another 20 minutes for that line). Getting out is fine during the work week due to enhanced trains (well, not now, thanks WMATA) but getting home kills your good music vibe.
You can bring water bottles into the pavillion. Just not food or something that isn't concealed in a water bottle. Any coolers/blankets/etc you can leave on the side but not bring in.
I was just there for Gypsy Kings on Sunday and it was a really lovely experience.
I'm sure the B&S will be great; I'm going too, but I wish it was just them for a solid 2 hours and no one else!
-
Totally! Rent a ride share car
The public transport option is horrible
-
Even space doesn't metro to wolf trap. My god, sounds like torture (outside of Belle and Sébastien)

The 930 shows from 2006 was my first time at the 930! (flew from California)
In the meantime, I'll get myself fired up for the show by listening to this epic performance of theirs from 9:30 in 2006. The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner is such an amazing song. Still gives me goosebumps to hear it live.

Was this the HoF kerfuffle where they announced a late show AFTER the first show sold out and people lost their minds because they were sure the (now) early show they had tickets to would have a shorter encore because of the time constraints?
Or was that before 2006?
-
The 2006 shows were 2 nights in a row.
-
The 2006 shows were 2 nights in a row.
Not the same. I felt it was closer to 2002-2003. People straight up lost it on here.
-
Still have 2 tix to this if anyone is interested.

What time does everyone think each band will start tomorrow? I have a friend who doesn't normally attend rock shows and she's all worked up that I suggested that getting there by 8 would be enough time to see the second two bands.
-
Doors at 5:30 and looks like opener at 7 PM and probably only a 30 min set. Japanese B at 8 then?

jealous of NC last night......they played at a 1400 capacity club (moved from a much larger venue, prob due to ticket sales).

only gotcha would be can take a while to get into the parking lot and walk to the venue...like budget 30 mins, so arriving at 7:30 if you want to be at your seat/lawn by 8
-
FWIW I'm enjoying the Los Bitchos's album. fun instrumentals with lot's of influences, cumbia, surf, psychedelic also produced by Alex of Franz Ferdinand
-
Looks like we can be expecting 12ish songs from B&S tonight :(
-
^setlist is prob incomplete....but yeah I expect a slightly shorter set because of Japanese B....
-
6:30 PM House opens
7:00 PM Performance: Los Bitchos

must say personally I liked the ryman set list better

seem to be mixing it up on all the dates...different set lists every night ...very different

dang an stones cover, from exile no less
yeah, looked like a fun show, need some post show banter people
-
I just can’t envision Stuart singing “..gotta scrape that shit right off your shoe”
-
quite possibly the only song I've heard hutch sing in front of a live audience
-
A Summer Wasting (!)
-
Wish I could have gone last night but my kids were burnt out from makeup baseball games and swim practice. Doubt they would have made it past 9pm. Hopefully one of these two artists will play the club/Anthem in the near future.
-
Pretty awesome time last night. Stuart was in rare form. Other than Axl Rose or one of the GNR guys in the late 80s early 90s, he's the rock star I wish I was. What a life.
Good setlist. Sad they didn't play any Write About Love songs while playing four songs from the Life Pursuit. Good album, but not worth playing at the expense of other albums.
Piazza NY Catcher is better when it's just Stuart singing with guitar playing. The song is supposed to represent loneliness, which is better represented without the full band playing it.
Was great to hear deep cuts A Summer Wasting and Song for Sunshine. If She Wants Me may be the most underrated B&S deep cut. Such a great track.
Wolf Trap is a really nice venue, too bad it's out in BFE. What's the deal with the lame alcohol rules in the seats? They don't want spilled booze to ruin the plastic seats and concrete flooring? Makes zero sense. But thanks to the beer guy for not opening my beer and allowing me to sneak it into the seats.
Props to all the attractive women who came out for B&S. Certainly enjoyed that.
It would be so easy for B&S to mail it in and just play the same songs every show except for changing up three or four. So many bands do that. Instead, they rotate through 50-60 songs (guessing) so every show is going to have pretty different setlists. That takes a lot of work and takes a truly professional band that cares about providing value to their fans to embrace. On that note, I'd pay 2x as much for tickets for an all B-side or single night. #Ilovemycar
-
What was attendance?
-
I just can’t envision Stuart singing “..gotta scrape that shit right off your shoe”
Stevie sang it

Ok that makes sense. I can imagine Stevie.
How long a “snippet “ was it…. On set list like three songs are listed as snippets

Dunno. Corners of the seats were empty. Lawn was pretty full. Not sure about the upper level.
-
So 3000-4000 maybe
Not bad
A lot better than the Anthem show a few years ago.

I've seen 'em half a dozen times and that Anthem show was by far the worst. That's saying something considering I was also at the echostage show!

You can take anything to the seats as long as it's in one of their sippy cups. Same cups you get at the KenCen.

Tonight:

Yeah that Anthem show kinda sucked. Worst setlist I’ve ever seen them play for sure.

8:05 PM Performance: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
9:20 PM Intermission

seems like the Patriarchy is to blame

I know, but the cup costs $6. Lame.
I can understand being more controlling with drinks at the Ken Cen. But Wolf Trap needs to get real.
-
You never could take drinks to the seats before, and it sucked. Now they let you, which is cool, but they charge 6 whole dollars. Other venues charge, 11 to 20 dollars for a single drink to bring to your seat. And you are bitching?

I assume you could buy one cup and use it gor many years to come?
Im at the show tonight. $97 ticket for $39, with fees included. I should have driven to the parking lot and gotten a ticket. Seats were down to $18 with fees included.
-
Sukie in the Graveyard, I'm a Cuckoo, and Another Sunny Day are pretty much overdone...they just irritate me now.
This is like going to a Tori Amos show....you either will have an amazing setlist, or a boring one.
I'd say this setlist is a 6/7. They could've done more from the new one!
Hard to top the show I saw at Union Transfer in 2019:

Yes, it's pretty stupid to force patrons to pay an extra $6 to bring their drinks to their seats. There's no legitimate defense of this lame policy, so stuff it.
Even worse that you could BYOB and get blotto drunk on the lawn but heaven forbid anyone bring drinks to their seats.
-
It’s de facto corkage. You can open a bottle of wine in a park for free. You gotta pay $50 to open one in a nice restaurant. It’s a regressive tax on the Julian class that can afford seats away from the grass-stained swine.
-
Can someone break down the gas costs + refillable cup + discounted ticket to confirm if $pace got a good deal tonight?
-
I just want to know 1) who bought refillable Wolftrap cup 2) picture of cup
-
Fuck...Space paid $20 more than he needed too? Probably ruined his night.
-
There were people behind me who had (larger) refillable cups of something, that weren't the refillable sippy cups sold by Wolftrap. And though it looked like their cups had secure tops, they still managed to spill some of their beverage all over my head and back as they stumbled to their seats.
Perhaps if they had invested in the $6 sippy cups,. this would not have happened. People at concerts tend not to really care about the people who are around them, so I figured it's par for the course. I was just glad people decided to stay seated for all three acts.
-
This must have brought back traumatic memories of that time you were hit in the head with a bottle.
-
This must have brought back traumatic memories of that time you were hit in the head with a bottle.
Space seems like the kinda guy where you have to narrow it down a bit more than that. More than one person has felt the need to pelt him in the head with a bottle.

This was fun! About a forty minute quiz competition before I emerged as winner…felt I could have had it a few rounds earlier..about fifteen people showed up.

I would expect Belle and Sébastien fans to wear masks at this event.

Mine is on my arm!
A very respectful almost diffident bunch..
Stuart is just the nicest most adjusted guy ever…
Definitely a treat… I was able to exorcise some of the trauma that still haunts me over missing their first DC show at the Black Cat (I had tickets!)back in1998 or 1999 cause I had to be on a world bank mission in Panama by coming clean about it with Stuart

the majority of twitter accounts are anonymous - we have no idea who is behind a given account (unless the account owner IDs him/herself). before today, we had no idea what hutch's twitter account is.
hutch essentially outed himself - he showed us his account name in that screenshot, so we now know that he's behind the "@barbasupers..." account. this in turn means we can follow him, DM him, etc. it's not a huge hit, really, jules was playing up the implications...
-
I mean, it really wasn't all that hard to figure out. Once you have Julian's account, just scan down everybody he follows.

That's hilarious that you think I wouldn't have a zero post dummie account that I use to monitor everyone in the 930.com ecosystem.

I think some people maybe are just more freewheeling in their social media use?

I mean, isn't one of the key points of twitter to get teh most followers?

I mean, isn't one of the key points of twitter to get teh most followers?
yes, but twitter account can rack up millions of followers without anyone knowing who is behind the account.

Well what is the point of that? I ask as the dad of someone whose life goal was once to be a millionaire YouTuber.
-
I have been on Twitter for a while….really don’t care who follows me…or who knows me…not much to hide….certainly not much to lose… anything of any import is entrusted to my partner…
It’s bizarre how something pretty cool for me can go off on this absolutely useless tangent

This should be our motto at the top of every page of the forum.

many people want to keep their online anonymity. being "outed" as the person behind an account can, potentially, have consequences ("wait - for years now i've been following the musical recommendations of some long-haired government-employed 50-something suburban dad?? UNSUBSCRIBE!!!").
youtube is different. for the most part, wannabe youtube millionnaires/influencers/asshats appear in front of the camera, so at a minimum you see their face - that's one aspect of anonymity that's lost. you don't have to disclose your identity and you can hide behind a non-identifying account name, but anyone who gains popularity will inevitably be identified/outed.

this is the correct attitude.

this is also correct.

Congrats to Starsky! I unfortunately passed despite living a mile from Meridian Hill Park because I had an important work meeting to attend. Stuart is the coolest dude on earth. Not many other stars just randomly meet up with fans and especially in DC. Stuart is the man. Lucky those who made it out.
-
Thanks. Stuart really is the coolest…I walked up just as he was arriving…he is so down to earth….
I mean he had a flight a few hours later from Dulles..and there he is sheepishly pushing his scooter up Malcolm X Park to host a 45 minute improvised quiz show with fans…dude even brought the instructions and installation pack and showed me how to fold it
It was all a bit surreal and I am so glad it happened cause I always felt cheated of having that personal connection moment or encounter with him
-
Does anyone else find it problematic that the oldest guy in the picture wins a scooter?
-
I wouldn’t bet I was the oldest …one dude was like I could of met you in 2002 but was too introverted
I will say the quiz skewed heavily towards first few years… I guess Murdoch agrees with me

Hutch's high tops don't fit on the deck. He keeps it above his fireplace.
