LCD Soundsystem
hi there.
there's a thing we do, or have done historically, where while on tour and in fine fettle as a unit, we go into a studio and just record ourselves live playing a bunch of the stuff we'd been playing on tour for a while, and maybe a cover song. it started with us playing radio sessions at various radio stations, and we often really liked these recordings, as they're quite different than the records, and then we wound up doing the london sessions in 2010, which we released as a record. so this is one of those.
we recorded this last year at electric lady studios in new york--the big room downstairs--and it was exciting, actually. it's a good sounding room with a lot of history. hell, lennon and bowie made "fame" there, which was the first 7" record i (james) bought back in something like 1976.
it has some old songs and some new songs, and a couple of covers from sheffield bands (this wasn't intentional, but it just worked out that way. we're not moving to sheffield). nancy sings on one, and al and i do our best phil oakey impressions on another.

to be clear, this is not what i would call a "NEW RECORD". it's just a compilation of live-in-the-studio stuff that we like to make and have out a la the aforementioned london sessions for anyone who likes that kind of thing. sometimes the best version of a song happens on those. i might argue that the version of "yr city's a sucker" is better on the london sessions than it is on the LP.

anyway, this thing is out on the 8th of february. it will be on all of the magical streaming services, and if you like vinyl, you can pre-order it over here at DFA: http://store.dfarecords.com (http://store.dfarecords.com)

I hate to write this but their last album was so mediocre from the absolutely worst album cover ever that I  just can't get too revved up about their "hey we recorded this in a total half assed way...and its a bunch of covers" hipster approach

While I somewhat agree on your "hipster approach" argument, I strongly disagree with your opinion that American Dream is mediocre. It's the weakest since their debut but still has a ton of great tunes (Oh Baby, Change Yr Mind, Call the Police, etc.)

Don't know what they were thinking with that cover art though...

Just to clarify before The Director starts sending me mean texts, the American Dream > This Is Happening is my opinion and he does not co-sign.

I just find I turn up listening to that LP the least. There are a few great songs on it, no doubt but there's also 5-6 songs on it that if I never heard again, I wouldn't care. Drunk Girls did not age well, either.

Drunk Girls was always the song I liked least but some of the stuff on This is Happening is brilliant... I thought the Ryuichi Sakamoto/Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence nod was so cool...

Another reason why the album is very special to me. Was front row center in the pit when they played Charlottesville in October 2010. Still one of my favorite shows.

two new weezer albums...  yeay?

Weezer’s surprise cover album is half karaoke, half internet meme (https://www.vox.com/2019/1/24/18195851/weezers-no-scrubs-teal-album-covers-toto-africa)
The band’s viral cover of Toto’s “Africa” was rapidly eclipsed by its version of TLC’s “No Scrubs” — a sincere jam from a cheeky album.

(...) The meme is a fitting one, given that Toto’s “Africa” is well known to be one of the most beloved songs of the internet — and the joke’s expansion into an entire album is a clever marketing ploy. But Weezer’s album is more than just a fun nostalgia trip for fans; it’s also clever stealth promo for the band’s upcoming March release, The Black Album (https://www.spin.com/2018/11/weezer-black-album-release-date-zombie-bastards/).

New Idlewild "Interview Music" out April 5th.

They released the first track "Dream Variations" yesterday and it's absolutely killer.  My initial reaction was it starts out as Idlewild but morphs into a Super Furry Animals.  I later update it to this

Totally digging the transition it makes from what the band does best with a driving bass line  and then slowly morphing into a 60s pop haze.  That keyboard hook is going to be stuck in my head for weeks.  Looking forward to whole album!

Any good old school rock and roll records come/coming out?

i was going to put this in the re-issue thread, or the vinyl not dead yet thread, but i'm lazy and you offered an opening:

Quote
Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant announced that his sixth solo album, Fate of Nations will be released with a special limited edition 180gm black vinyl.

Record Store Day states that album will be released in 13th April 2019. It will also be the first available Robert Plant vinyl in 30 years.

You can click here to find a participating stores.

Here is what Record Store Day‘s writes about Fate of Nations:

“This special limited edition 180gm black vinyl of Fate of Nations is being re-issued on Robert Plant’s own record label Es Paranza around Earth Day. All profits from the sale of this record will be given to Robert Plant’s nominated Environmental charity.

The album title and the artwork of the original 1993 is focussed on the impacts of geo-politics and globalisation on the earth / Robert’s environmental concerns.

The outer sleeve will be high end matt soft pack, whilst the inner sleeve will be printed on ethically sourced material and feature updated artwork (Environmental facts from 1993 compared to today’s data) This album has not been available on vinyl for 30 years (since the 90’s).”

agreed.  i'm arguably the biggest Zep fan here, and his solo stuff leaves me cold.  a decent track here and there, but low signal-to-noise ratio.

fact nobody cares about: my first arena/stadium concert was robert plant (openers: the black crows) in 1988 if i remember correctly.

Knife + Heart is an erotic slasher set in a 1970s Paris. It’s directed by Yann Gonzalez and scored by M83, the band fronted by his brother Anthony Gonzalez. The original soundtrack was influenced by music found in ’70s horror films by Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava, and others.

My Ipod shuffle is playing the shit out of country tonight, much to my wife's dismay. Merle Haggard, Bottle Rockets, Uncle Tupelo, Solomon Burke, Drive By Truckers, the Backsliders, Tom Waits, Dwight Yoakam, Two Dollar Pistols, and oddly, Stereolab.

There is a good article on Billboard today about female country singers...

The Beat w/ Ranking Roger - Public Confidential

Gotta say this is very worthy addition to The Beat cannon.  He’s pulled together a really tight group of musicians for this incarnation and he sounds great as a vocalist.  It sounds like he was ready to take on the world again prior to being diagnosed with cancel.  Fans of The Beat wouldn’t be disappointed in this one.

Man I used to be hardcore obsessed with Manu Chao but he is now up there with the Stone Roses in terms of output...one album since 2001 release of Estacion Esperanza...the very mediocre Radiolina

Glad I saw him twice around 2007 as he hasn’t been back although at the show in Philadelphia he got real angry at the stage crew over sound issues and it was not peace and lovey so it kind of killed his image..made me think he is a bit of a fake

Clandestino has never been more relevant than today but I ain’t rebuying it

I wonder if he just burned out on weed

Bob Mehr (via Faceboks)

A bit of “personal news” as they say. This morning The Replacements and Rhino announced the release DEAD MAN’S POP, the first ever ‘Mats box set. I was lucky enough to have produced the project (along with the estimable and ever diligent Jason Jones of Rhino) and wrote the liner notes. There’s a funny bit of backstory as to how this set came about…which, like the band, started in a basement in South Minneapolis.

In late 2014, Slim Dunlap’s wonderful wife Chrissie Dunlap was cleaning out the basement of the couple's house when she came upon a stash of Ampex reels hidden in a cupboard. She realized, based on the songs and dates, that these were Replacements tapes from the “Don’t Tell A Soul” era. After sessions at Cherokee and Capitol in Los Angeles with producer Matt Wallace, the band had finished tracking the record at Prince’s Paisley Park studios in the fall of 1988 – at which time they absconded with a handful of reels, reels that included Wallace’s unreleased "quick mix" of record, and a session the ‘Mats had earlier cut with Tom Waits while in California.

Upon this discovery, Chrissie asked Slim if they should call and alert Warner Bros. to the fact that they had these tapes, to which Slim replied, “No!” Asked why, he said “I don’t want to go to jail!” (as you can see, Slim still has his sense of humor very much intact). Credit really has to go to Slim for saving these tapes rather than, say, tossing them in a large body of water. But he’s always had great foresight -- “Slim’s a smart son of a country lawyer” as Paul Westerberg once told me.

Likely because I have earned my PhD in Replacements studies, I was dispatched by the band’s management to retrieve the tapes in early 2015. I brought them back to Memphis where we had them transferred (fittingly enough) at Ardent Studios.

Listening back to Matt’s original (if admittedly hurried, somewhat incomplete) Paisley Park mix it was clear that a far different version of “Don’t Tell a Soul” actually existed than the one that had been mixed by Chris-Lord Alge and released in 1989.

It’s worth noting here that the released version, the Lord-Alge mix, is a fine LP – and was, quite frankly, the more commercial and radio-geared record that needed to be released in 1989 to keep the band afloat. But, the truth is, it didn’t *sound* much like the album the Replacements had recorded. Over time, I think that fact became clear and the record’s reputation suffered somewhat. In the end, “Don’t Tell A Soul” would become The Replacements’ best-selling album, and also their most divisive. A perfect encomium for a band built on such contradictions.

It also became clear that a new package, built around a version of DTAS the way the band and Matt had wanted it to sound, would be a good idea (this was a desire that Westerberg had expressed many times over the years). But, of course, there was more, including other much discussed but little heard recordings from the era, like the band’s first attempt at making DTAS in Bearsville with Tony Berg, and the Waits session. On top of that there was the Inconcerated live show, from Milwaukee in 1989, of which only five songs had ever been heard previously.

After many fits and starts and lot of legwork, we finally got the okay to push ahead with the box set this year from the band and from the good folks at Rhino Records.

This past May, Matt Wallace finished the job he’d started 31 years earlier, finally completing the mix of the record, which is called, “Don’t Tell a Soul Redux.” As I wrote in the liners, while it’s impossible to unhear a record that’s been around for three decades, this version is the album the band made and intended to release. In addition to Wallace’s mix, "Redux" also restores several crucial elements from the sessions, including original drum tracks, vocal takes and tempos that were altered in post-production and the band’s original sequence of the album. Matt’s new mix finally brings out all the sounds that were committed to tape – along with the Replacements' singular spirit, humor and passion.

The man, the myth, Brian Kehew -- who mixed "Live at Maxwell’s 1986" for us -- was brought back onto the team to help mix the bulk of the material that appears on the disc of rarities, “We Know The Night: Rare & Unreleased.” Brian also did a masterful job mixing “The Complete Inconcerated Live” show – and actually did some heroic salvage work on several tracks that had technical issues. Happily, this is now a sparkling and remarkable sounding set, that’s every bit as important a document of the band’s Slim-era lineup as Maxwell’s was to the original foursome.

The whole package was brought together sonically by Justin Perkins of Mystery Room Mastering. Justin had a truly epic task pulling these various audio sources together and making it all sound right. He did amazing (often tedious cleanup work) so that the listening experience on this box would be perfect. And it truly is.

Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman cut a beautiful vinyl master of "Redux" for us under the supervision of Matt Wallace (when you get your copies of the box, be sure to check the run-out groove on the LP).

The whole package is presented in a 12 x 12 hardcover book – loaded with dozens of rarely seen photos -- and features a detailed history of the "Don’t Tell A Soul" era written by yours truly.

Like all things Replacements, this project was a labor of love (and sometimes hard labor). At the risk of being embarrassingly personal, I was given the opportunity to work on this at a pretty terrible time in my life, following a personal tragedy. Having a creative purpose like this probably saved me. For that, among many other things, I’m eternally grateful to the band and its management (especially Darren Hilll), all the folks at Rhino including my co-conspirator Jason Jones, as well as the Dunlaps, the Jespersons, Michael Hill and all who helped with this project in ways big and small.

Anyway, that’s some of the how and why this came about. I’m sure I’ll share more as things go along and we get closer to release. In the meantime….DEAD MAN’s POP is available for pre-order here (if you get it now you also get a little bonus gift with the box) https://www.rhino.com/…/dead-mans-pop-4cd1lp-deluxe-cassett…

I'm sure Julian's loving all of this...but damn the reviews of Frank Turner's new album No Man's Land are devastating

the project was doomed to begin with and not really sure what he was thinking and my first listen may be my last

example of the criticism (https://www.nme.com/reviews/album/frank-turner-no-mans-land-review).

seems like folks are jumping on him because he's a man trying to share the stories of women who he believes are unknown, haven't received their due, etc.  seems like a laudable goal but he's being shot down for mansplaining, "these women are already important without your help, and so on.  well i didn't recognize a single name he sings about on his album, so i think he hit his mark: if i were to listen to this album (no guarantees that i will), i would learn about historical figures i wasn't aware of.  to me, seems like he's being crucified for the sin of being a man wanting to elevate women - "how can you do that when you're a man, part of the patriarchy?!?!?!?".  seems like a no-win situation.

but i haven't listened to the album, so maybe the music is terrible and that sinks this effort from the outset... maybe if the tunes were better we'd give him a pass.

he's a man trying to share the stories of women who he believes are unknown, haven't received their due, etc.

This sounds lame, corny as hell, and intentionally virtue-signalling. Halfway through your description of the project and the blowback he's getting, I found myself thinking of that Same Love song by Macklemore.

And honestly, that's about spot on! Macklemore and Frank Turner are the same person to me. They are both these super corny, milquetoast dudes who you can tell sincerely think they're cutting edge and earnest and emotive despite the fact they're basically the musical equivalent of Wonderbread. What's annoying about both isn't the inherent anodyne, color-by-numbers quality that defines them and their musical output -- bland might not be great but there are worse things to be -- its that you can tell they both genuinely think they are brave and innovative and "feel" on a level the rest of us can not. The performativeness, for lack of a better word, of these totally average people is what's exhausting and grating.

These are people who if ever required to write a resume would list LEADERSHIP as their defining quality in the first damn sentence of the CV despite being the following-est follower ever to follow. They're proudly #Woke but only in the sense that they parrot "woke" talking points they read once. They were born on #Woke third base and think they've hit an evocative triple.

Neil Young announces new album 'COLORADO'
(CNN) Neil Young has announced that he's releasing a new Crazy Horse album this October, called "COLORADO."

According to the Neil Young Archives website, the singer will release the first single next month, "Rainbow Of Colors." Songs on the ten-track album will range in length from around three minutes to more than 13 minutes, Young said in his statement.

The album will also arrive alongside a documentary about the making of the album, titled "Mountaintop Sessions" and directed by C.K. Vollick.

"You will see the whole process just as it went down! Worts and all! I don't think a film about this subject with the openness and intensity we have captured has ever been seen," Young wrote about the project.
Young last released 'The Visitor,' back in 2017. His last album with his Crazy Horse band, 'Psychedelic Pill,' was released in in 2012.

About his upcoming project, Young added, "We hope you love this new album as much as we do."

I think he has been semi retired for close to 30 years....and I think he made so much money...if memory serves some lawsuit and writer royalties..that he doesn’t need to do anything

I think he’s done

In a case like this the only thing that would probably motivate him would be working with his son but he has already done that I think

Anyone know when the last time he played DC was?

He played the Patriot Center with Crazy Horse in November 2012.  Canceled the Lockn performance in 2013.  Prior to that I think DAR a few times, but solo.

His last Crazy Horse tour in maybe 2012 or so??

New Pernice Brothers album and tour!

Hello,

Yeah, it’s been a while. Not much, how ‘bout you? I’m not sure why I called. I guess I really just wanted to talk to you. (That’s from England Dan And John Ford Coley’s 1970’s smash hit “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” in case you didn’t know. Say what you will about the song. The hook is pretty massive, and the tune had to have been a license to print money for the songwriters. I wouldn’t kick that number out of my catalog for making crumbs. I always figured there must have been some other dude named Dan in the duo’s coterie, and soft rock Dan adopted the prefix “England” (note: He did not adopt “English”) to distinguish himself from the lesser Dan. Well, by Jesus, unless lesser Dan became Dan Akroyd or Dan Marino, it worked. )

Over the years I’ve borrowed a few tropes from the 1970’s soft rock genre. You got a problem with that? (Damn, too agro. Let me start over.)

Hello, Everyone. You look fantastic. Wow! The years we spent apart were really kind to you. You look exactly the same. I’m serious. Who, me? Oh, stop. You’re embarrassing me. I think your eyesight must be going. Sure, I worked pretty hard to lose most of the weight I put on with the baby, but you know what they say about Joe’s charm being 50 percent illusion and all. Like Mary says regarding her good looks: I had it when I needed it.

Anyway, about a year ago I quit my job at the blood bank and started writing songs. Lots of them. All kinds of songs. Before I knew it, I had a pile. And the pile was pretty high, like dirty laundry. (That simile may not be completely inaccurate.) I was left with only a single option: Make a newPernice Brothers record. Which is what I did. It’s called Spread The Feeling, and it comes out on Sept. 9, 2019. (If you’d like to order it, here’s a link.) For now the only ways to get the record are through Bandcamp for the digital, and mail order for the vinyl. (The LPs will not be mailed out until right after Oct. 17, 2019. They’re still being pressed, but you can preorder now. It should still be warm when you spin it.) I apologize to most fans outside North America. I have no European/UK/S. American recording or distribution deal, and rather than wait around for something to happen I decided to just put the damn record out. (If you’re in Australia the record will be available from Spunk Records. And it’s looking like something is coming together for release in Japan.)

We are also probably going to press a very limited number of CDs. Apparently a few of you still listen to music that way. (The plan is to press some, but we’re at the mercy of the pressing plant’s schedule. Will update when we know a CD delivery timeline.)

And then comes touring. The last time my band played live was at thee Carnegie Hall. No joke. Would have been pretty cool if the last band gig we did had been Carnegie Hall. But it’s not to be. We’re going to play a short “tour” with the band. Nothing enormous, just a few shows at first to ease back into things. (You can see the dates here.) If all goes well, who knows, maybe we’ll stay out on the road for a while. Again, apologies to Europe/UK, but having no Euro/UK booking agent is going to make playing shows your way tough. I’m working on it, but can’t promise something will shake out.

Oh, there’s something I must get off my chest. I can’t let this lie go on any longer. There’s a Pernice Brothers chain letter going around. (Here’s the link.) I co-wrote it with my partner (business only, thank God for both our sakes) Joyce Linehan. If you sign up for our mailing list and play along you’ll get to hear some new Pernice Brothers stuff for free.

I think that about covers it. I’ll leave you with some middle-eight wisdom from England Dan and/or John Ford Coley: “I won’t ask for promises, so you won’t have to lie. We’ve both played that game before. Say I love you and say goodbye.” That’s what I’m talking about.

Chrissie Hynde w\ The Valve Bone Woe Ensemble  - Valve Bone Woe.  It’s perfect lazy Sunday afternoon listening.

Miles Davis - Rubberband
A unreleased album from 1985 which is very much of that time with a couple tracks that sound as if someone had snuck into Paisley Park for some late night sessions.

I listened to the Chrissie Hynde...not bad but i just don't think her vocal chops are good enough to really make a standout jazz album.

Gruff Rhys - Pang!

Really nice new album from Gruff has a really great Global sound and was produced by a South African producer Muzi.  It's a cross between the chamber pop along the lines of Nick Drake and David Bryne's solo work.  And it's in Welsh..

some unheard sessions of Dylan and Cash (https://www.stereogum.com/2058771/previously-unreleased-bob-dylan-johnny-cash-duets-collected-on-new-bootleg-series-vol-15/news/)

the two recorded an entire session together in 1969, and we’ll soon get to hear it.

Rolling Stone reports that the next edition of Dylan’s archival Bootleg Series will devote a disc and a half to the Cash/Dylan session. The two apparently recorded this thing one day with the rockabilly legend Carl Perkins, and it features the two of them playing each other’s songs and also doing standards like “Mystery Train,” “You Are My Sunshine,” and a handful of tracks from country originator Jimmie Rodgers.

Why would a musician be tight lipped about an album coming out? Is the goal to sell as many copies as possible?

Yeah, I'm not digging it.  It sounds like the last two, but is somehow so much more boring musically, lyrically and basically in every way.  And it's a double album too.  Ugh.  I haven't been able to get through it all yet.  I get the trauma, but don't like the album.

Same, actually. From what I have heard, he's such a fucking overwrought drama queen. Get over yourself buddy. I'll give him a pass when it comes to songs about the death of his son, because that is fucking dramatic, but it seems like he's always that way.

He can be "human" all he wants, but that doesn't make me want to listen to all his moaning and groaning.

Yeah, I'm with Space, this is a terrible take. There are lots of people I am empathetic towards; its a false equivalency to present that if you do not like someone's musical creation you are dehumanizing them.

Wilco hasn't had a good album since Summerteeth.

I wouldn't go that far back, but I would say it went downhill at an alarming speed after "A Ghost is Born."
I'll meet you in the middle and say YHF is utterly listenable. A Ghost is Born is straight trash tho.

I held that same opinion for years regarding A Ghost is Born. Then something clicked for me and now it may be my favorite, depending on the day of the week.

Wilco Setlist from last night in Torontoe seems to be a little something for everyone. I am looking forward to the show. I met a couple the other night that are going to Radio City, Bklyn Steel, Anthem, and Charlottesville. They seemed nice.

That's the exact same set in the same order that they played in London, with three songs trimmed out.

Ah, different couple. I have a friend who seems to be a bit of a Wilco groupie, I'm surprised she's able to hold down a professional job, lol.

Ahem...

...I think I may be done with live Wilco...I guess I'm just done with the set lists they play...I'm not sure how many more times I can hear Heavy Metal Drummer, and the ensuing roar from the crowd...They play this song every damn show.

So you don’t like the classics or the new cuts...seven from new album

Not having seen Wilco since the Americana fest at Merriweather I don’t really have a problem with hearing classics and I think playing most of the new album is what a band should be playing

When did Wilco go off the rails? It’s pretty easy to tell as it was captured on a pretty well known film

They're playing a sold out Anthem show. And other sold out shows at other venue significantly larger than when they were playing when that film was made. Remind me, how did they go off the rails?

Or quality new output vs riding their laurels

Also, they didn't even sell out the DAR last time
what was the last DC date?

A band selling concert tickets on past glories...happens all the time

Let’s not rehash old arguments...the story is well known...arguably Tweedy didn’t have much choice if he wanted to survive...read his book

It’s a nostalgia show....I would guess 90% of people at Wilco will never bother to listen to new album and will be taking bathroom/smoking breaks during new songs

Nostalgia shows have their place

Nothing wrong with this

Look forward to hearing a lot of old favorites and there are at least two songs on new album I really like

What's the difference? The critics have liked the newer stuff and much as the older stuff, and they've expanded their fan base and now sell more concert tickets, without trying to sound any more commercial.

But Wilco’s last few albums probably are selling less than 100,000 copies

It’s just that old fans still dig the old tunes so they go see them live

last DC proper date was superbowl sunday in 2016 I think...
after that they have played a well attended Wolftarp show in 2017.

Anyway, Wilco are still a fun band to see whether or not you like the most recent album(s). And their festival in Massachusetts is really the best festival. They are neither off the rails nor everyone's cup of tea.

The 'Paisley Park Sessions' features Beck and his band channeling spiritual energy into a Prince medley. Rounding out the sessions are unique, streamlined arrangements of two classic Beck originals, “Where It’s At” and “Up All Night.”
