'Freedom from Slavery' Fest Ruined by Hooliganism
« on: June 20, 2007, 02:03:00 pm »
Syracuse's Juneteenth celebration was shut down by police three hours early Saturday night after fights broke out among youths.

As fights erupted at the Clinton Square festival, hundreds of youths surged through the square and surrounding streets. Deputy Police Chief Frank Fowler made the decision to close the event at 8:10 p.m.

Two people were stabbed, one at the edge of the square and another near East Washington and South Warren streets, Fowler said. The wounds were not life threatening, Fowler said.

The festival marks June 19, 1865, the day the last American slaves heard news they were free. Over the years, the festival and parade have become a celebration of African-American culture.

Police arrested 14 people, including one juvenile, Fowler said. A suspect in one of the stabbings was among those arrested, Fowler said. There was no gunfire, the deputy chief said.

Names of the injured and arrested were not immediately available. The investigation is continuing, Fowler said.

Most of the day was great, said organizers, who placed the blame on youths attending the event.

Fowler agreed, calling the troublemakers "a group of young people with no intention to enjoy the festival."

"I am highly, highly, highly disappointed," said Roosevelt "Rick" Wright Jr., who was the stage master of ceremonies for the event.

"We have got to educate the young people of the historical importance of Juneteenth," Wright said. "This is a most holy occasion. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom."

Another 'Freedom from Slavery' festival is Marred by Murder.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday.
Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.

The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police spokeswoman Toni Chovonetz said she had no further information, including how many people were involved.

The driver was able to get away is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

this is a serious question worth a sincere debate.

why are the black youth so angry?  bill cosby doesn't know.  is it because they cling to the  material misgivings of life that bring you nothing but needing more?  do they truly not give a fuck?  spreading violence at a "freedom from slavery rally"? -- that has to be the most pathetic thing i've ever heard.  i mean, i guess i could understand black youths starting shit if it was a group of whites having a "the joys of slavery days." it truly is amazing how ignorance leaves no skin colour unturned.

Blame rap and hip-hop...evidently it's cool to be really angry and violent, treat women in your community like crap, have your pants hanging down near your knees and your shoes 3 sizes to large but not fasten the laces.
