Guided by Voices memories
« on: February 15, 2006, 02:18:00 pm »
Just listened to Robert Pollard's latest solo CD and bumming that I didn't make it out for his show... While I joined the GBV train a bit late in 2000, I remember hearing about them when they went from being an underground band to getting national press partly as a result of playing on one the early Lollapalooza festivals.  I also accidently ending up owning two copies of "Bee Thousand", long story.

Inspired by listening to "From A Compound Eye", I figured it was time for a little GBV reminiscing...

My favorite show was the one where they co-headlined with Cheap Trick, favorite momemt of the show was when Bob came out swilling Jack Daniels straight outta the bottle during "Southern Girls".

I saw Guided By Voices once, at the street festival in downtown DC, on the bill with Violent Femmes.

Some guy came up to me while GBV was playing and asked, "Are these the Violent Femmes?"

oh, i have many shows to choose from. . .the highlights, for me, were the May 5, 2001 show at 930, and the two SXSW shows in 95 and 96 where, in one form or another, i got to meet the whole band (pollard has seen my autographed copy of bee thousand, i think)

oh, and while the final show was a great show, it's still too bittersweet for me to rank it.

My favorite show was at the Bowery Ballroom in April 2004 -- a confluence of events made it a spectacular night, I had great friends there (some of whom were new to GBV and became fans at that show) and I thought the band was in particularly rare form.  And I got in a fight with a chick up front and had the drunk bass player ask us to chill!  (Her fault, of course.)

My fondest memory has got to be from the Isolation Drills tour Pittsburgh show. After hanging outside with the guys while they load equipment and smoking bl**k h**h, Bob decides that he is now guided by one hits.He then declares me designated driver to get them back to their motel( I was admittedly not the best candidate)so off we went through the Pitt tunnel and onward to I 79,all the while being guided by one hits. Have some funny pics from that night.Hung at the motel and partied til Bob passed out, then said our goodbyes to the rest of the fellows and headed back through the WV hillside. They were a fun bunch and will be sadly missed.
