What about the Graybar Hotel?  Low rates, plus free continental breakfast.

I've stayed here many times. Extremely basic but clean and safe. If they are booked, try their sister hotel: Portland Square Hotel

this place is on SOHO/chinatown - i have stayed there.  its not 4 star by any means, but it isn't a crackhouse either....mostly foreign young people staying there (cuz its cheap and in a good spot..just 2 blocks from the subway) - i stayed in a room that had a shared bathroom, but you can get ones that have private (for more money of course)

Why stay in a shitty hotel for $150 when you can get a 4 star hotel for the same price?
do you work for them?

try NY Inns. They have a few hotels in different parts of the city. ive only stayed at the union square one (right next to the beauty bar) and the upper west side. they aren't too expensive, and if you wanna pay even less you can do the whole shared bathroom/shower thing to bring the costs down. if you want to stay in queens (LIC), theres a hotel there that i got for 62$ a night. comfort inn long island city (w/AAA discount). and you can hop on the NRW7? and it will get you right into the city. not sure about those lines, but i think those are the correct ones.

any other ?s. i live in NYC at the moment.

Not at all. But the last two times I've booked through hotwire, I've gotten this place

 http://new-york-barclay.intercontinental.com/

for $140/night. Certainly a better place than some of the links I've clicked on which had comparable prices.

 >>> Gotta agree with the Chuckster on this one........this is my idea of "roughing" it!.....I will look into this on my next trip to NYC.....last time I was there I stayed at the Marriot Rennasiance on Broadway......pretty damn steep, but well worth it.....

I have to agree. If you are able to get a good rate, Priceline or hotwire is the way to go. I've stayed in some really great places that way. But if one of those sites won't accept your price (which has happened to me during peak season), then go with one of the others.
