well, Fairfax is practically LA's lower east side (minus Brentwood)...except with cbs studios and a swank outdoor mall.  Diamond Bakery has my favorite bagels on the entire planet.  they aren't completely New York-y, but they are damn tasty.

One mysterious thing about bagels is that I always thought they were a Jewish thing, but a few years ago I went to Israel and couldn't find a bagel anywhere!

The bagel originated in Poland.
 
 BTW, I have been to Poland, and I can testify that Polka music does NOT come from Poland.

On the recommendation of this thread I tried Valentino's on Little River yesterday and it was great.  I had a slice of baked ziti.  It wasn't as hot as I would have liked, but it was no big deal. I could have asked them to put it in the oven for a few more minutes if I really cared.  
 They had a huge selection.  The Hawaiian and Buffalo Chicken were tempting, but I'd never had baked ziti slices, so I went with that.

 As for bagels sucking in Israel, it's a Europena thing, not a middle eastern thing.

mmhm--you are absolutely right.  New York, as dirty as it may be, has some of the best-quality tap water in the entire 'States.  and the water you use in bread products is a big variable in how things are going to taste. [/b]

yeah...we recently went on a brewery "tour" of the Brooklyn Brewing Co. (which consisted of standing in a room of equipment and hearing a guy talk about beer) and the guide said that NYC water is "untreated"(whatever that means) which is why the pizza dough, bagels and beer are so good...I think it has to do with not having alot of chlorine in it (?)

i've never had pizza here that i would write home about. seems like any of the 4 or 5 neighborhoods i inhabited in pittsburgh had better. not a big fan of italian food in the dc area in general. tons of other good stuff, though

The DC area has a TON of chlorine in the water. I notice a huge difference alone with DC to Montgomery Co.  I was house sitting for my parents in MD and I thought I was in a pool when I took a shower.
 
 I remember in college a housemate of mine was living at his uncle's during the summer in Chevy Chase, he's from Long Island, and all he could say was how much chlorine was in the water here.
 
 The real answer is the water...unless someone gets bulk water from NYC you will not find a bagel or pizza in the DC area that will even compare to NYC.
