Favorite pizza in the area

Mine: Valentino's, corner of Little River Turnpike & Seminary Road, Alexandria. Pretty much the only real NY-style place around...a huge counter full of speciality pies ready to be popped into the oven and served by the slice.

I would second Valentino's.  I used to live right up the road from there; nothing beats their Chicken ala Vodka pizza.  I recently moved, and we've tried Montgomery Pizza (I think that's the name) near Old Town...it's just not the same.

None -- I've looked for New York/Jersey pizza in the city and never found it.

Going in another direction, 2 Amys and Matchbox kick ass.  But that's not "pizza" the way I'm thinking of real pizza.

Do you mean Monterey pizza? It's *awful* - too bad, since they deliver to my area...

For a decent no frills NY style slice there's a place in Bethesda called Corner Slice. It's not bad.

In the city as far as delivery is concerned (if you don't want to spend a ton of money on a gourmet pizza) Pizza Boli's is not too bad. It's far better then either of the big chain places.

If you want something tasty but a bit different go to Ledo's Pizza. They serve a pie with a slightly sweet sauce and a very light and flaky crust. Most of their sizes come in a square shape, but it's a very yummy pizza.

My own.  :D

I've had NY pizza and I don't see what the big deal is. My favorite pizza place is Emma's in Cambridge, Mass.

I went to Joes in NYC last year because you're "supposed to". It was awful.

Went to Lombardy's in NYC on Saturday. It was pretty good.

I like Pizza Paridiso here in DC. Though I've only been once. Matchbox was good too.

As for New York, I agree with RC, I don't see what the big deal is about NY pizza.  Most of it is overly-greasy slices served up by surly Greeks, and is no better than the giant slices of Adams-Morgan.  Maybe there is a mythical perfect NY pizza that everyone remembers from childhood, but it's damn hard to find.

You're probably not going to get the best pizza at places that specialize in slices.

Yeah, but to hear New Yorkers tell it, you can't walk a block without finding the best pizza in the world.  And it just ain't so.

Kosmo, because of the size of Alberto's, it would be hard to hold a forum gathering there... the thing to do instead would be to get a large pie or two, get some beers in paper sacks, and walk over to Dupont Circle Park and eat it sitting on the grass on a nice day....

Three Brothers in Greenbelt. The other locations are quite variable (Riggs Road was especially bad, not at all worthy of the name) but Greenbelt is the flagship. Two of the three still work there.
