The problem is, much of this country is rural or pseudo-suburban, and the only place to buy music is a Wal-Mart. Yes, we're spoiled here (and DC ain't even a haven of record stores). The idea that a single entity is essentially controlling what people even see on the shelves is disturbing.
Unlike some folks who I've met, who were listening to Pavement before they could walk, most of us work our way through what the radio gives us, and what we see at stores like this to Magazines, internet zines like Pitchfork etc. But if you're a 15 year old kid and discover Pitchfork but then can't buy anything that they review at your local superstore, then you're discouraged from investigating more interesting music.
