music at my gym
« on: March 26, 2004, 03:19:00 pm »
So I know all of the full beard wearing indie dudes are naturally slim and beautiful and have never seen the inside of a gym, but stocky 35+ future suburbanite alt-country dudes like myself need to hit the gym occasionally to avoid turning into total mush.

Well the past few weeks at my gym have been golden, as their music system, which consisted of playing cd's by all time greats like Taylor Dayne, Blues Traveler, and the Spin Doctors, kicked the bucket.

Now I get this distressing email:

 Hello xxxxxxxx members,

As many of you are aware, xxxxxxx has been unable to play music for the past few weeks because of equipment failure.

Over the last several months, xxxxxxxx's Board of Directors has been evaluating different music options for xxxxxxxx in response to your numerous requests for greater music variety.  The xxxxxx Board is excited to share the following news:

In approximately 3 weeks, MUZAK LLC. will begin providing music for xxxxxxx Fitness Center.  Muzak was "born" in 1929 and has grown into an innovative company that currently provides music service for over 325,000 clients around the world.  Muzak offers many styles of music, including High Energy, a special blend of upbeat and motivating music that is intended specifically for fitness centers.  For more information about the company, check out http://www.muzak.com.

xxxxxxx will continue to be music free until the new system is in place.
After the installation, comments about the new music service should be sent to xxxxxxxx
 Your feedback is appreciated!

 Have a great weekend!

Make sure you always have your MP3 player and really huge, powerful headphones.  At all times, did I mention that?

There is a gym near my house.  All the treadmills are upfront by the window, and many of them are usually occupied.  I always get a kick out of the fact that people actually get in their car to drive someplace to walk.  And they pay for this service.

Maybe it's the special blend of upbeat and motivating music that they are paying for; music that they couldn't get anywhere else.

My gym is actually part of my workplace. It gives me something to do for when I need a break from posting on the board. Though in the warmer 9 months I just use it as a place to change  and shower before and after running.

I stick with the mp3 route, myself, and have several "perky" playlists set up for the gym.

I go to the gym 5x a week, and it gets me through somehow.  (The New Pornographers are a perennial gym favorite for me.)

Its not a bad idea in the winter time, no one wants to run two miles in the cold!  Snot is all running down your nose, your ears are frozen, and god forbid you dress for the weather, because then you have lost 3 lbs of sweat by the time you are done!!!

why anyone would ONLY walk on a treadmill? i just dont know./

My gym, which also used to make pinball machines, has some satellite hookup (probably Muzak) with several channels that get bounced around. Usually, it's not loud enough to be bothersome.

Normally it would be, but I actually foolishly volunteered to present a paper at a conference in August. So it looks like I'm going to have to do some work for awhile.

My gym has little cd players attached to most of the cardio stuff.  That's pretty sweet, being able to crank Husker Du and be oblivious to everyone around you.  And you don't have to worry about your ipod or portable player falling on the floor.

The gym I go to has DC101 blaring out all the damn time, so you get the "teenager screaming at you over really bad guitar playing" crap which is commonplace on DC 101.

Luckily though, spinning is done in it's own room and the bloke that leads it is just a bit younger than me and English...needless to say the music is heavenly. The Monday night session is lead by a woman in her early 30's...I don't recognize a lot of the bands but most of it is good so I presume it's the stuff you lot talk about all the time that I'm too lazy to go check out.
