Neko mentioned something about needing to wake up at the beginning of her set, and it showed. The first 3-4 songs were rather low energy. It got better as the show went on, but it never quite hit the high mark of last year's show. The audience didn't really seem to be as enthusiastic as last year either, as I recall, and that didn't help with the overall energy level of the show. (By energy level, I mean the intensity of the performance and subsequent audience reaction.) I would have liked to have heard a couple more Fox Confessor songs such as "Margaret Vs. Pauline" as well. "John Saw That Number" was the main highlight, but it might have come too late. Or maybe it was just me! Last year's show was probably the best show I attended all last year. I suppose it was inevitable that any follow-up show would suffer in comparison.
I wasn't at the show last year, but I agree with you completely. It seemed somewhat low-energy and routine. Following the show, she didn't bother to address those of us who waited outside when she walked to the bus; if she was standing outside around 1:30, she must have gotten off the bus right after we left. Someone in her band mentioned that she wasn't feeling well, so that may have something to do with it all.

this was my first time seeing neko.  i thought it was a very good show.  she has an amazing voice.  but i agree with the general sentiment, there was just something missing that didn't quite make it a memorable show.  maybe she's getting tired of the fox confessor material because this is her 2nd time around.  a couple near me talking through the whole freakin show didn't help.

Was it me or was the crowd for this show really kind of, erm, uptight?  I actually got yelled at by some dude for "interrupting his conversation" after I politely attempted to move past him on my way back from the bathroom.  Um, go out in public much, sir?  Sometimes other people are there too.  It was kind of striking since I remember a very mellow and pleasant vibe from the audience at the show last year and I guess that got my hopes up.  Oh well.

I was kind of thinking the same thing after the show last night. But, if she really wasn't feeling 100% or was just exhausted, then that could be the reason. Probably a little from column A and a little from column B.

I think she should resurrect the entirety of The Virginian and Furnace Room Lullaby for a tour; that would be something to see.  :)

I agree.  The crowd at her previous show was very quiet, respectful and focused on the stage.  Some people at this show were talking throughout and it made me nuts!  Why pay money to see a show and then have a conversation the whole time? Grrrrr.

And as kmb187 said, it would be great to see her do stuff from The Virginian.

Was it just him solo? When I saw him he had three others onstage with him, and played mostly Crooked Fingers songs.
