I just use the "the you might also like" suggestions on amazon. A lot of them are pretty accurate. Last.fm has good suggestions as well.

I acutally bought a CD from Amazon over the weekend.  A used import from an aussie band called Big Heavy Stuff.  Bad name, yes, but in the mid 90's they released a great album called Maximum Sincere.  I somehow acquired a cassette of it years ago but don't even have a tape deck anymore.  Can't wait to get it in the mail.

I read The Big Takeover,Stone,Blender,Mojo,Melody Maker, etc. and I also check web sites and I still know a SHITLOAD of people in the radio biz across the country that clue me in and some give me promos to listen to....

i like a lot of the stuff that is featured on the Other Music (music store here in ny) email blasts.

other than that, there's so much new music popping out of everywhere that i've kinda tuned it all out and just wait for either my brother or my friend marc to say the magic words: "man, have you heard ____?!".. and then i'll check it out.

If you think the people on this board are hipster-music-dorks, you should not visit the above site.
They have a 55-page, 1,000-post thread devoted just to Jay Reatard's Blood Visions. That's pretty awesome. Can't imagine what they'd do with a Radiohead disc or a reunion MBV.

Dusted Mag often has good reviews/recommendations of stuff I'd never heard and I more often than not end up happy with the recs I do check out.
