Where do you get your music from?
« on: September 07, 2007, 06:14:00 pm »
A lot of people here seem to have sort of the same-ish taste in music. Where did you find out about these bands? I get Spin, Rolling Stone, and Blender every month and the random top friends on bands searches from their myspaces. Where do you find your music?

Mostly from discussions on here.  That's enough to keep me plenty busy.

ditto.

i'm also on a few e-mail lists for niche electronic genres.  but for rock, indie, acoustic, djs, electronica closer to the mainstream, etc... this board is all i need (and could possibly ever attempt to keep up with)

friends, myspace friends requests which usually are pretty good bands, lots and lots of email lists - filter, ohmyrockness, and a bunch of nyc lists, and the Popscene website for SF usually has a bunch of new bands im interested in, and FFWD, a dj night in nyc, usually is playing brand new bands - and my friend posts most the songs for d/l on his site of what he's playing.

i go with insound.com a lot

also, heres a funny thing i do:

go to amazon.com , look for "new and future releases" and then i just browse through them.  i usually sort them alphabetically and go through them week by week and when i see an album that i dont recognize, i click on it.

after a while i can spot the albums i would like by their album work, band name, label, etc.
i.e. - if a band is called "Beneath the Dead Corpse" i know its not my cup of tea (at least odds are its not!)

this process takes forever really and i need a spreadsheet to keep up with it, but i have found literally hundreds of new bands this way (this was how i first learned of the white stripes back in 2000).

In addition to reading Rolling Stone, Blender, and Spin.  I listen to Left of Center on Sirius.  They constantly play new artists.

I find most of my music online, while reading blogs and through updates on Hype Machine. I'll occasionally find new artists through Under the Radar, Filter and whatever blurbs are included in non-music oriented magazines such as Nylon and Bust. Also, I enjoy previewing random albums in music stores and often end up loving things I've bought on a whim.

Paste Magazine is also a pretty good source. Plus you get a sample cd with each issue.

Ever read
  hipinion?
That's the worst of the worst. I've been there a couple times and couldn't stomach the pretentiousness (is that a word?).
