They did rock all the way out at their SXSW show, not an easy thing to do at 2 in the afternoon in a big sunny outdoor venue [Stubbs]. It was pretty crowded with lots of people jumping around, including The Hives. They looked real cute in their black outfits too. They are gonna rock on 7/20, and with Sahara Hotnights and Reigning Sound opening you really can't go wrong for 16 bucks.

Swedish Rock chicks by themselves are worth $16.  The Hives are just a bonus.  Definitely worth $16 and your time.

thanks to pollard and random for the info  :D

and even if they did "hire" someone to write their own songs, it's no biggie with me.  just ask sweet, mud, etc.  frankly there are some bands that need to hire out songwriters...

I got my tix recently and wondered the same thing re: their popularity waning..  Still looking forward to it since I missed them last time.

Exactly.  It's not long division here; it's rock n roll.  I just really love the fact that, instead of trying to flex indie cred by covering up someone writing their songs, they lie about it.  Pretty clever, if you ask me.  If nothing else, those guys know how to get in the papers.  I missed the last Black Cat show, but when they opened for the (International) Noise Conspiracy a while ago, they completely upstaged them.

Yeah maybe I am being too harsh about the songwriting thing.  FWIW I did enjoy the BC show...the songs are good and the band sounds good.  I'm going to the 9:30 show not just for the hives for Saharah Hotnights as well.

it's going to be a garage rock night in DC, because the ponys and thee snuff project are at the black cat backstage. the ponys are a kickass new band on in the red, and thee snuff project are one of the best bands in town right now.

i hope i can get out of work early that day to catch THE REIGNING SOUND, who will likely blow away the following two bands. it's greg oblivian's current band, and they play beautiful songs that straddle the line between raw garage soul and byrdsian country-tinged folk-rock. the oblivians were arguably the best garage band in america in the mid '90s.

i'm not impressed by the hives; don't hate 'em, just indifferent. i saw the sahara hotchicks once and they were fun, much better than, say, the donnas. garage fans should have a tough time choosing between the two shows.
