Tax write-off?
Sadly, the record industry has intentionally used this tactic at the artists' expense and waste of time and energy. Worse yet, the company will often end up owning the music so the bands can't even move on with their goods that
they created! Lots of the smaller off-shoot labels of the big names were created specifically for this purpose. Sorry but I can't remember exactly which ones that I've often heard and read this about. I'll let GGW do the research.
I know I've read and heard that it happens in the film industry too. Films will be made and shelved solely so they can write them off of their taxes as losses. It's generally not the filmmakers themselves who are doing this but the industry who
supposedly supports them. They use their underlings as tax shelters and write-offs!
The really sickening part is that Reagan had passed some law that many unsold products, including books, records, etc., had to be destroyed. Have no clue how the details work but a friend of mine use to work for such a company and it use to kill him to have to destroy so many books and such. For what it's worth, I would assume that cut-outs are considered sold products. Can't say for sure because, as I said, I have no idea how all of this works.
With that said, I can't imagine that being the case for this film, even if it ends up unintentionally happening this way.
