i find this idea of a "meaningless" or "wasted" vote to be a funny one.  there is no such thing as a wasted vote.  somehow it's only worth voting if it's a closely contested election?  even if your candidate is projected to win, a bigger majority = a stronger mandate.  your guy is going to lose?  don't let him/her lose by more than they have to.
 
 a vote for a third-party candidate is also very meaningful.  even if he/she know they're going to lose to a dem or a repub, they need & appreciate every vote they get.
