On the USB ports...it shouldn't matter whether it's USB 1.1 or 2.0 - both should work, although the latter much faster. The main reason why USB ports sometimes don't work with iPods has to do with a given port being unpowered, i.e. not providing power to the device that is connected to it. If you have a desktop with USB port(s) in the front, those are usually unpowered, whereas any ports at the back of the computer are usually powered. Laptop ports are usually powered, although if you have USB ports via a PC card slot, these are sometimes problematic. Try a different USB port if you have it and see if this works.
