Most computers have multiple USB ports. It's possible that one is bad. Try plugging it into another USB port on your computer. If all your USB ports are bad, there's several possibilities: one, that the PCI card they're on is bad, and needs replaced (should be ~$25), or alternately, you could have some sort of hardware configuration problem. Either way, if you can cure that problem, I near guarantee your Ipod will work.
 
 Or, you could get the firewire hookup for your ipod.

Is this a USB 1.1 v 2.0 issue? Don't you need a 2.0 USB port to transfer music?

 As for the USB port, that could be it, everytime I plug in the ipod it says something like "USB port will perform at a reduced speed"-  When I click to see if there are any faster ones, the computer tells me no.  and the option is on manual update. No, it only recommends USB 2.0.

The nano and 5G (Video) are USB only, believe it or not.
 
 Definitely check yr USB ports. If you only have USB 1.1 you may want to purchase a 2.0 card, around $40 or so. 2.0 is many times faster than 1.1; it's even faster than Firewire but not significantly.

USB2.0 still has a master/slave connection though, as opposed to true P2P which means every bit transferred has to go through permissions checking which actually slows it moderately.

I am not sure on the exact USB Speed, but I know it is lower than a 2.0.  This is my work computer, so I dont think it is that old. I'm thinking I am going to have to forget about this computer working with my ipod.  I dont think work will purchase a 2.0 card just so I can update my Ipod at work, although it would be a nice gesture. I won't push it, as they may already be ticked off at all the other stuff i have downloaded onto it. Thanks though!

On the USB ports...it shouldn't matter whether it's USB 1.1 or 2.0 - both should work, although the latter much faster.   The main reason why USB ports sometimes don't work with iPods has to do with a given port being unpowered, i.e. not providing power to the device that is connected to it.  If you have a desktop with USB port(s) in the front, those are usually unpowered, whereas any ports at the back of the computer are usually powered.  Laptop ports are usually powered, although if you have USB ports via a PC card slot, these are sometimes problematic.  Try a different USB port if you have it and see if this works.
