So is it total blasphemy to think Million Dollar Baby was a good, solid movie, but not much more? (Not "amazing" as I've heard a couple people in my office say.)

I haven't seen Million Dollar Baby, but this is one where the hype factor could come in to play -- if the folks in your office who think it's amazing saw it without knowing much about it going in, they may have been blown away.  That happened to me with "Sideways" -- I saw it very soon after it's release and hadn't read a thing about it.  So I was really dazzled, probably more than if I'd been expecting it.  Make sense?

Your theory makes sense, but doesn't so much apply to these folks. We all saw it this weekend, knowing it was an Oscar nominee.

Conversely, I wasn't that impressed with Sideways when I saw it a while ago, but can now see perhaps why it is so acclaimed the more I think about it.

About Sideways...I like the part about where the Paul Giamatti character kind of sets up the metaphor that he is like an elusive Pinot...but, generally speaking isn't this and other metaphors in this movie kind of obvious?

Greatest P.R. Stunt in the history, of everything.

Epic.  Everyone is jealous they will never get THIS much press, for anything they do.  It's, wild!

I'm glad Summer of Soul won for best documentary. Was outstanding and the footage blew my mind -- highly recommend.

I'm curious on the board's take on this rock/smith altercation...I kinda think walkies take is right, it was staged

he slapped him, he didn't punch him. Yes I guess that get's in to the realm of assault, won't argue that...but it still is slightly lower on the scale IMO.  I don't really know where the line is drawn on assault.
if rock isn't pressing charges is it actually assault?

btw..this is a great follow

Of course it's assault. Just like Luke raped Laura on General Hospital. Just because someone doesn't press charges doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Will Smith is one messes up dude. Poor guy has to let his wife sleep with younger men just so that she will keep his secret. Even if Jada is a good beard, he still needs to get out of the marriage and come out. It's 2022, people will still love you no matter your rainbow connection, Will.

He actually started laughing at the joke, but when he saw that look on Jada's face, he knew he was going to get a beat down from her if he didn't macho up and do some asskicking.

If (for example) Lupita Nyong'o's boyfriend did the same thing Will did, he would have been escorted out of the buidling and charged with assault. But Will is too rich and powerful. Different kind of justice for someone as rich and powerful as Will Smith.

And of course Rock is not going to press charges. He will lose the respect of many in the Black community if he does. Plus, he probably realizes that it was a shitty thing to joke about (and the joke wasn't even that funny.)

How about the bit with Regina Hall sexually harassing some of the men in the crowd? Not very Me Too of them. How would it have looked if it was a man doing the same bit?
