Sonic Youth in China
« on: June 27, 2007, 10:08:00 am »
This is a little old, and I'm sure everyone is hard at work, doing whatever you do to pay the bills...but, there's a sloppily written yet interesting photo blog (by the British born promoter living in Bejing) chronicling Sonic Youthâ??s brief tour in China back in April the week before Coachella.

Iâ??ve been to Asia but never to China proper, and was quite surprised that they would be allowed to play let alone have such a rabid responseâ?¦is this further evidence of globalization, the corruptive effects of western culture, a positive side effect of the technology age???

I donâ??t know but the whole thing is pretty cool, whatever the larger implications.  Since my work focuses on Europe, I may just be ignorant of the fact that China has steadily co-opted palatable parts of western culture and sought to enhance and flex its economic might, seeking to usurp our global dominance without firing a shot.

Far from being a China alarmist, Iâ??d like to see a counter weight to some of our shenanigans in order to create a global balance that would cause our leadership to think twice before doing stupid shit.

 But back to SYâ?¦.

Thanks for the photo essay bnyced.  You might be interested to know that in the late 80's they toured for Daydream Nation in Russia.

Very interesting.  I love reading stuff like that.  As a Sonic Youth fan AND a fan of China's culture, a great little read, with pics as well.  Kind of reminds of of "Get in the Van" type stuff.  Thanks.

Way too much shit going on that weekend, but I'll get my fill of SY by going to Pitchfork though...and one of the Roundhouse shows depending on how my labor day festival plans work themselves out.  And finally I'm stopping off in Austin in route to Download SF in October to see what will likely just be a "regular" SY show, which is probably when they'll put touring behind Rather Ripped/Day Dream Nation to bed for 07.

Wish I was. Gonna have to settle for Pelican/Earth which isn't a shabby consolation.

Numbnuts,

China's culture is 4,000 years old.  The time in which abortion policies have been in place make up about 10 years of that span.  To say you hate the culture of one of the oldest civilizations in the world is like saying you think North American culture is horrible because of the Patriot Act.

I wonder where Thurston and Kim's kids are? Must have stayed home with the nanny. I just love it when celebrities talk about how challenging having a kid is. Because you constantly have to manage your nannies!
