Capitol police have locked down the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill this afternoon and are searching for a man who may be armed and a woman who may have a connection to him, police said.
No gunshots or injuries have been reported.
A police spokeswoman said the man entered the building at about 1:30 p.m. Police believe he is carrying a .38-caliber snub-nosed weapon that has a white handle and a blue nose. It was unclear how the man got past security guards.
The suspect was described by police as a white man, 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds. According to police, he is wearing a black suit and carrying a gray backpack. At around 2 p.m., police also said the search had widened to include a white female about 5 feet 5 inches tall, between 20 and 25 years of age. The woman was described as having shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a pink shirt, khaki-colored pants and carrying both a black purse and a maroon bag. Her connection to the man was unclear.
Police said they were actively searching inside the building. Some people inside the building are being evacuated, police said.
