Impressive, but I think DC needs to build a store like Easy Street first.  I was there in December and that place is huge.  It was like an indie megastore - CDs, shirts, magazines, books, vinyl, and plenty of room for performances.

I've been reading Our Band Could be Your Life and noticed the similarity of the name Charlie Nakajima with Charlie Nakatestes. The latter came straight out of my head before I had ever even heard of the former.

Amoeba in LA (and Berkley/SF, but i haven't been) has the same thing...it's great, because a lot of the time there the bands will really play full sets for an hour or so if the place gets packed

The author is the drummer for a halfway decent band called King of France, who opened the Nada Surf/Rougue Wave show.
 
 I wish he had included Bad Brains and the Dead Kennedys.

 no doubt played plan 9 back in 1995.
 i know there's been others, but that's the only thing i can think of off the top of my head.. not that it's interesting.
 
 when i was in boston, i caught part of an in-store set by jeff buckley once.

The owner of Easy Street is also the president of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) which probably gives the store more pull then most... Pearl Jam performance there was specifically for the members of CIMS and was recorded to be sold at CIMS stores...

I went to see Azerrad at Olssons when that book came out.  Azerrad said he left the Dead Kennedys out of the book because they reached their height in the '70s.  I would assume the same holds true for Bad Brains.  
 
 Ian MacKaye was at the reading also.  He gave Azerrad some shit for telling lots of anecdotes like the story of the penis on Amy Carter's suitcase and not focusing on how the '80s punk bands were builders of community.

Plan-9 does have a fair amount considering we're richmond, but they're horribly advertised. I know they've had ween, stellastarr*, ted leo, yellowcard, etc. Not that I'm saying those are great acts, but at least it's something.

There doesn't seem to be any record stores cool enough in the DC area that would be able to pull it off. Probably not because bands don't want to do it, but because no record stores are pro-active enough to get them there.
