Hospices are relatively new as far as health care is concerned. While it is a place where you go to die, they make it as comfortable and peaceful as they can (i.e. lots of drugs). The word hasn't really picked up a negative connotation yet so it doesn't sound like what it is: terminal.

me too .. i loved the commentaries he did for NPR.. when they seemed to stop about a year or two ago I was very concerned..
