i guess my point is - before you go off slagging all bands pre-80 (or whatever year he chooses), he might want to consider if it werent for these bands, a bunch of these other bands might possibly not exist.

All those you mention would not exist if it were not for the prior bands. They are standing on the shoulders of giants. Because something does not connect with you does not make it the worst. You have to give them credit (or at least those bands you mention give them credit) for the trails they blazed.
That damned quote and sentiment!:
"Pigmaei gigantum humeris impositi plusquam ipsi gigantes vident."
Well, I for one disagree with both Isaac Newton and Noel Gallagher. If you want to spend all your time paying tributes and respects to those who've come before than go right ahead. There are certain instances where gratitude is due.
Those who have fought in wars for the sake of country. Splitting the atom. Solid state circuitry. The brassiere. We should all be thankful for those who have developed those things. Because of them, I am grateful.
But I'm supposed to pay respects to John Lennon for "Ticket to Ride?" For what? The F#m chord?I can't enjoy Queens of the Stone Age without lighting a votive for John Bonham? Everytime I listen to Radiohead I have to say a prayer for Syd Barrett's soul? Please....
I always think it's funny that we are forced to pay respects only up to the 60's generation of bands. Never before that era. It's a sin to not RESPECT THE ALMIGHTY ROCK OF ZEPPELIN! But do you ever hear about having to pay respects to the rock of Muddy Waters or Willie Dixon?
Or how about Chuck Berry? Without Chuck Berry, I think the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys would all have sounded much different. But do you ever hear people saying "Chuck Berry, man! Greatest rock n roller ever! He's still got it!" like they do with Jagger and Co? No, because the Stones are a.) baby-boomers b.) white and c.) playing to football stadiums instead of state fairs (like Mr. Berry does these days.)
This whole "respect your elders" thing in rock n roll is a joke. You're only supposed to respect the elders who have deals with American Express and Starbucks.
