The Kaiser Chiefs
« on: February 13, 2005, 07:37:00 pm »
A few of you asked me to report back on the Kaiser Chiefs show in Brooklyn. I went into the show only having heard I Predict a Riot and Oh My God. I'd heard that they were a likable bunch and put on a good show. That was an understatement, as it turns out. The show was terrific! The band bounded on stage, shouted "Hello, Brooklyn! This is a fine turn out!" and jumped into the first tune. The set list was cleverly arranged because the first song was fairly simplistic brit-rock. A fun tune but not awe-inspiring. However, with each tune, the band added a layer of sound and complexity. By the third tune, they were playing full-on, rock-out tunes. (As my friend said, "The guitarist was being a bit coy for the first two songs.) They are distinctly British in their sound and stylings and clearly have a great time playing together. There is a lot to be said for seeing a band happy to be on stage, thrilled at the crowd response, and joking with each other. In fact, the banter from the drummer and singer was laugh-out-loud witty. The main source of charisma is from the singer, Ricky Wilson. He leaps in the air, hops across the stage, and shouts. I loved his energy. Unsurprisingly, I Predict a Riot was the high point, but there were a couple of slower songs that I liked a lot, too. I think they might reach Franz Ferdinand status if they spend a lot of time touring this year. (I actually like them better than Franz. The songs are more interesting to me.)

I was much less impressed by The Prosaics. A band that never achieved a cohesive sound. The rhythm section sounded the same for every song, and the vocals didn't jive with the music. I actually liked the sound of the singer's voice -just not the way he was singing (if that makes sense). He kept drawing out words. The guitar (played by the singer) was the only bright spot. They are the kind of band you want to like but are just bored by. A disappointment.

Thanks for the great review.  Your writing made me feel like I was there. You put your finger on what can make up for any shortage of technical skills with some of these bands.  My biggest complaint about Interpol at the last 9:30 club was their attitude:  It said "Shit, we're so put out at having to play for you tonight, you wankers."  You might remember Stevie Winwood at the 930 a year or so ago:  He never acknowledged the audience was even there...and kept his back to us for most of the set.  I heard later, he has horrible stage fright, but it didn't make me feel any warm fuzzies at the time. I think if I'm paying bucks to see 'em, they might just want to show a little appreciation by pretending to enjoy the opportunity...but hey, I'm a demanding bitch.

I couldn't agree more -- this is why Sloan is in my top five bands.  It's the show, the joy, the fun, the play.  That makes up for a HELL of a lot.

Glad it was great; hope they get down here soon.

i dunno, depends on the band for me ... i saw tricky maybe 5 years ago or so at 930 club, he never once faced the audience and it worked so well with his music ... i couldn't imagine interpol standing up there, joking around and laughing with each other, then launching into a post-punk dirge about the bowels of the NYC subway system, i think their stage presence works fine for their work ...

I couldn't imagine wanting to listen to a post-punk dirge about the bowels of the NYC subway system.

Probably Black Cat, which is a crime, but then again we get to see them at the Cat.

I will certainly be seeing them multiple times on this tour...

Suki, I do love the somber Interpol guys since it suits the music. (Plus they break a smile now and then!) There's a difference between intense and surly. Interpol aren't surly.

But as for the Kaiser Chiefs, I loved their spirit on stage. Good fun.  This may have been mentioned on another thread, but their site has videos for I Predict a Riot and Oh My God. I think Oh My God is my favorite. Who can't relate to the lyrics "Oh my God, I can't believe! I never thought I'd be this far from home"?

I couldn't agree more.  More shots of chicks having a pillow fight and less shots of the band is absolutely the way I would have gone.
