At the 9:30 club on Friday night, the Dandy Warhols were the epitome of cocky rock-star swagger. Throughout the evening the Portland dream-pop quartet's frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, kept his lips fixed in a smirking Mick Jagger pucker. Next to him, keyboardist and singer Zia McCabe swayed the night away with a confident sensuality, often with her eyes closed and a maraca or tambourine swinging languidly in her hand. Asking at one point for a sound system adjustment, Taylor-Taylor explained, "I can't hear anything except the drums and me. Which is not bad. I'm pretty good!"

What was left out of that quote was "... but I'm not that fucking good."

All this self-assurance led to a wildly uneven show, a nearly three-hour epic that was at turns mesmerizing and soporific, intoxicating and irritating. At their best, the Dandy Warhols created a decadent, blissed-out sound built around surging bass lines, swirling guitars and Taylor-Taylor's ever-sultry vocals. Several songs like "Be In," "Godless," "Solid" and their sassy new single, "We Used to Be Friends," hit this mark solidly.

At other times the Dandys seemed to confuse self-assurance with self-indulgence. Several tunes dragged on endlessly, detouring into tedious ambient jams of floating guitars and trippy electronic effects. These stretches apparently strove for hypnosis, but mainly achieved boredom. (During one such lull, a fan wondered if guitarist Pete Holmstrom, mysteriously fiddling with an onstage computer, was secretly checking his e-mail.) One suspects the blame for this lack of discipline lies with Taylor-Taylor, who rambled variously about the deaths of Johnny Cash and John Ritter, and at one point sang a languid version of Duran Duran's "Rio," accompanied by just his guitar. Undisciplined indulgences like these were sometimes charming. But about 30 minutes less of them would have been a lot dandier.
Rio was only played because some kook in the crowd requested it. Courtney totally saw the joke in it and even laughed about it. Then he nicely but sarcasticly said, "Just don't call out Freebird or we'll be here all night."

Personally, I liked the drawn out songs but then again, I enjoy music that I can space out to. I don't need a full in your face rocked out experience all the time to musically entertain me. And I danced all night long!

Yes, she played with her tits to the crowd.....but they weren't exposed, and personally, I couldn't care less. Lots of very hot guys onstage though.     :D     Paige, did you see them? Our kind of guys!

I went for the music, which was good. The scenery was only a bonus.

Yes, and more hot guys to blow us away on Thursday night!    :D  ....if the hurricane doesn't do it first.

Hey all, just wanted to say it was good to meet a few of you all the other night(Jag,Kurosawa,Jadetree,Markie)where were you GGW?,albeit briefly.Jag,thanks for the disc,I'd heard none of it before.Standouts so far would be the Statistics and BSP but I need to absorb it more.As for the show,I was content with it.They played about everything i wanted to hear, they were all coherent and seemed to be glad to be there. My favorite had to be their psychedelic cover of the Stooges Loose, wasn't expecting that.It was easily the most subdued I've seen them but I'll take that anyday as long as they got the tunes right and I didn't notice many mistakes, and they clocked in at about 3 hours, don't get that much from anybody these days.Well worth the price of admission..Hope you guys enjoy the discs I burned and maybe you even found something new to your liking.Hopefully next time I can stick around to shoot the breeze, but my ride had to be back home for work,we got back about 530 am.Damn rain!Anybody going to B/more for BJM?Kurosawa,i also dug courtney on You come in Burned, one of my faves from the new disc that I didn't expect to hear. So,anything stand out on the discs you all got?

Not an easy thing to do at the 9:30 Club. But be patient. The board is very slow today.

You"re welcome. That's Nicholai from the Strokes muckin up the begining with all the banter.I had him record it for me from the merch booth, turned out good other than that. They were fairly unknown at the time and were peddling their now coveted Modern Age EP.FYI-Strokes got their start when Bob Pollard picked up their demo that they threw onstage during a GBV appearance,Bob dug it and asked them to open the Black
Cat and some other shows from that tour. The rest, as they say is history.Look at the monster they have become
