Dandy Warhols vs The Clientele
« on: September 11, 2003, 07:41:00 pm »
I was inclined to see how the Dandy Warhols sound like, but after reading in the 9:30 email that “as their album art suggests, The Dandys have stripped their Velvet Underground-fuzz in favor of Duran Duran-inspired electronics” I freaked out and had to rethink going to this show. I must apologize for my musical ignorance, but if they have something in common with Duran Duran, then I can’t go. The other option now is to see The Clientele (there’s an article on them on the Citypaper) at IOTA. They might be too quiet, though.

Any recommendation, should we reconsider and maybe try the Dandy Warhols? Or should we just try The Clientele?

well I dont know anything about the clientele, but I will think you are crazy if you dont go to the dandies. Apparently they dont play a lot of songs off the new album.

The other day I heard a few Dandy Warhols' songs on the internet. I thought the ones from the latest cd were nothing special. On the other side, the couple I heard from previous albums were good. As for the Clientele, I had never heard about them, but it looks they are a new and very decent band from England. You may hate to make these comparisons, but if you had to compare the Dandy Warhols to other bands, to whom you would compare them?

Have you taken lessons on how to be annoying from Rhett.

Its hard to compare them to other bands because of their recent style change. The first three albums could be compared to brian jonestown massacre, which is the essence of the very best psychadelic rolling stones.

But that is to sell both BJM and the DWs short. The dandies have some fine pop songs. Real first rate, make my want to jump up and down like a crazy person.

But enough of my gushing praise.....

 Go here:

and listen to the two new tracks, then bohemian like you then godless. Listen to them four times each. If you dont think they are all fantastic, dont bother going to see any concerts ever again as you probably do not like music very much

I agree entirely with Markie, re: those four songs.  And er, yes, the new stuff is pretty much VU meets Duran Duran.  In fact, Nick Rhodes produced the whole record.  If you cannot possibly enjoy the idea of handclapping, ass shaking 80s pop joining forces with 60's psych, then don't go.  It's not that they'll play all that much new stuff, it's just that the crowd's more fun if everyone dances.

But, to be perfectly honest, the Clientele are an excellent band.  I love the latest record, and, were it any band other than the Dandys playing tomorrow, I'd absolutely be at IOTA.  So it's a pretty tough choice.

I would choosed the british band over the american band anyday. plus, seeing a show at iota beats seeing a show at 9:20 club and day. I've heard the clientele on the radio, and they're not as "quiet" as the CP would have you to believe. See them now at Iota. All fo the boardies will be raving about them in three months.

I thought it was Velvet Underground meets Nine Inch Nails (lite).  I've listened to their new stuff repeatedly now, and unlike their previous albums which stuck with me, not a whole lot of this is sticking.   Still, I expect the show will be great nonetheless.

Tough choice. I'll decide later today. In case anyone wants to listen to the Clientele, you can do so here:

Last time the Dandy Warhols came through DC was three years ago, if that factors into your decision.

 Intermission-

 Set 2:
Everyday should be a Holiday (stripped down version; distortion free; no keyboard)
 Godless
 Minnesoter
 Hells Bells (AC/DC)
 Genius
 Good Morning
 Boys Better
 I love you
 Lou Weed
 You come in burned

Definitely seeing The Clientele.

I've seen the Dandys before and was unimpressed.

Any idea how close we are to a sold out show at the 9:30? Still deciding where to go.
